I found the Mediterranean diet with high protein. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the comparison of an american diet to mediterranean diet, which diet would be recommended, and also, comparing and contrasting health benefits/consequences. This essay is written to bring awareness of both american and mediterranean diets. The american diet being high in carbohydrates, saturated and transfats is not the recommended diet when compared to the wholesome fresh produce and high in protien that the mediterranean diet has to offer. We live in an era where information is at our fingertips and social media has revealed that other countries diets differ from the diets we have here in the US. I recently saw a video on facebook comparing US school lunches to other countries school lunches. The difference on what was provided to US school children was shocking. The most interesting thing was that the other country schools provided lunches that contained fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains and even fish meanwhile the food being served in US schools is high in refined carbohydrates, sugars and red meats. This realization made me wonder how different our diets in america is compared to other diets worldwide. I have personally changed my diet to a mediterranean diet. In doing so I have noticed major differences in food options, benefits and recommendations for both american and mediterranean diets. The traditional American diet was simple, it was homemade, it was composed primarily of minimally refined ingredients, it was low in added sugars and fats, with the fats coming primarily from animal sources, and required effort to produce, by comparison, the contemporary American diet is much more diverse it's composed a lot of “palatable” sometimes artificial materials, its commercially engineered and sold, it's composed of refined ingredients, it's high in added sugars and fats with the fat coming primarily from seed oils, and requires minimal effort to procure(Pillsbury). At the same time as modern medicine is conquered the leading killers of the 19 century such as infectious diseases modern culture has created a whole new set of epidemics that we must now cure.
In “Escape from the Western Diet”, the writer Michael Pollan is making points as to why we should avoid the Western Diet. Understanding the problems of the Western Diet and solutions to escape from it is the main idea of this article. He reminds us of many different scientific theories that demonstrations how the Western Diet is behind the large number of diseases that follow to those who eat it. Those theories were the “lipid hypothesis”, the “carbohydrate hypothesis” and the “neolipid hypothesis”. Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto is an eye-opening analysis of the American food industry and the fear driven relationship many of us have with food. He talks in depth about all the little scientific studies, misconceptions and confusions that have gathered over the past fifty years. In the end provide us with a piece of advice that should be obvious but somehow is not, "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." He follows the history of nutritionism and the industrialization of food, in hopes to answer one question….. how and when "mom" ceded control of our food choices to nutritionists, food marketers and the government.

It is a known fact that other countries eat healthier than here in the United States. For example, the Mediterranean diet contains many fruits and vegetables. It also replaces fattening oils with olive oil. In the article “Mediterranean Diet Shown to Ward Off Heart Attack and Stroke”, Gina Kolata states, “About 30 percent of heart attacks, strokes and deaths from heart disease can be prevented in people at high risk if they switch to a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil, nuts, beans, fish, fruits and vegetables, and even drink wine with meals, a large and rigorous new study has found” (nytimes.com). Many people who have gone on the Mediterranean diet have decreased their risk.

“Dietary patterns of Americans differ widely, but most Americans eat a diet that could best be described as in need of improvement”. Compared to other countries, the American diet is very different. I have first hand experienced how much different Americans eat from other countries. For a brief, but very beneficial and productive time, I lived in Barcelona, Spain with my host family. Over in Spain, they eat much more fresh, organic food. There was a lot more seafood in the average diet. The meal configuration over there is also different than ours. Lunch is the largest meal eaten every day; different than America, where dinner is the largest.
