Being an educator in the middle level grades sector of our education system is not a simplistic idea with a singular task. It is also not easily defined. There are many aspects to be considered. We must start at the beginning where the basis was founded and build upon that. To understand and prepare for the future of education in the middle level grades we must remember the history, concepts, ideas, theories, and all the research that has come before us.
The concept of the middle level school is still a fairly recent one. The birth of the name and the concept came out of the need to separate and give new identities to the grades in between elementary and high school. It was determined through research and collaboration that this group of students needed a curriculum and establishment that was better suited to provide for and accompany them during their time of change from children to adolescents. The developmental properties of students in this group are rapidly changing and growing, unlike those of their peers below them in elementary and above them in high school. The previous concept of the junior high school did not fit these students. They were just a smaller version of a high school student. The high school system did not work for them. They needed a schedule and a curriculum that was designed around their ever-changing needs. Research has shown that pre-and early adolescence students have an understanding, intellect, and social order, physical and
Middle school was a journey that allowed us to figure out who we are and allow us to mature a little. Growing up doesn’t mean that we cannot act like kids.Someone once said, “Age doesn't define maturity. Some people will never grow up.”
It is a good idea to provide a separate school experience for middle school from the high school, because putting both middle school and high school in the same building will have a negative experience for middle school students in many aspects. Noticeably, the high school students and middle school students sharing the hallway is a bit destructive in some aspects of behaviors.
In a progressively more globalized world that necessitates more effective educational practices, the U.S., once the biggest global force in education, has seen its dominance slowly slip out, and its educational status fall even lower than that of several third-world countries. The decline experienced in American school system academic achievement is not as a result of lack of funding, but as a consequence of the overall educational system watering down. According to Gatto, educating children through the existing public school system of America is crippling rather than helping them. From his essay, ‘Against School,’ it is established that the goal of the whole public school system is to limit people’s intelligence in an attempt to create a society that is manageable. Gatto continues to state that action is needed to change this situation. He supports his assertions using current and historical information about the American school system and his personal experience. After reading his article, one realizes that most of Gatto’s arguments are true. It is true that the American education system is making the students comfort to the government and society norms, which is why they are easily bored. This essay’s goal will, therefore, be to support John Gatto’s beliefs.
As a future middle school teacher, I know I have much to learn. I have to learn how to effectively make engaging lesson plans that meet the academic standards of my content, I have to educate myself on how to efficiently and promptly determine all of my student’s different learning styles and motivation, and I have to learn how to professionally build classroom management and a safe classroom environment, while still developing a sincere relationship with my students. However, of all the things I still need to learn, there is just as much that I have already learned which has helped build and strengthen my beliefs on what I believe a middle school teacher is and my responsibility as such.
The trivialization of high school in the present educational organization for teens has been posited in the public; however, it is one vital issue that is being debated.
The attitude and characteristics of a middle school teacher greatly influence student learning, behaviour, confidence and sense of community. Middle school teachers should be aware of the physical, social, emotional and cognitive developments of middle year students. It is very important middle school teachers come prepared and design effective engaging lessons to impart knowledge to students. Teachers must develop vividness and interest of students using creative and innovative ways of learning strategies. They should also develop the capacity and flexibility to negotiate and plan the curriculum around students’ needs, interests, and learning styles. Effective teachers motivate students with a positive attitude
The National Middle School Association (NMSA) is now known as the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE). It has been a “voice for those committed to the educational and developmental needs of young adolescents” since 1973. This organization is the only national education association specifically committed to those in the middle level grades. There are over 30,000 members including principals, teachers, central office personnel, professors, college students, parents, community leaders, and educational consultants. The AMLE is recognized across the United States, Canada, and 46 other countries. In addition, AMLE has a network of “58 affiliate organizations in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia that strengthen outreach to the regional, state, provincial, and local levels.” The Association for Middle Level Education’s mission is dedicated to improving the educational experiences of all students ages 10 to 15 by providing vision, knowledge, and resources to educators and leaders. (National Association of State Boards of Education, n.d., paragraph 1).
After a child goes through this level of education, it was very difficult to move on in school, especially for girls because they were rarely let into male middle schools. Another thing that hindered children making it further in school was that it was no longer free at the middle school level. In fact, only about ten percent of the males that graduated elementary school made it into middle school (grades 7-11) and only eight percent of girls went on. Most of those that did not pass the exam to get
Many students worry about how their middle school years will go. Middle school is a very important part of a student’s education. Middle school is their initiation into high school and could really impact their future. Many elementary school students think that they are prepared and can do well in middle school, but many are not ready. Also, students who do not do well in middle school tend to not do well in high school. One lesson I would like to teach elementary school students is how to survive middle school, which is important because it will lead them to a better future by being prepared, managing time, and knowing how to problem solve.
Many people endure three years of middle school and four years of high school. It is an eventful time for children between 11 to 18 years old. During the adolescent years there are hormonal changes, environmental changes and emotional developmental gains. Middle school is the beginning of transitioning towards independence under the constant eye of adults. During high school they are challenged with real-world challenges that help them transition into adulthood. The behaviors of these individuals change as the factors change around them. For every person, the experience of high school or middle school may be different. Either way, both have the same goal of wanting the student to succeed and evolve. Even so, the similarities and differences vary. Middle school and high school are alike in the areas of receiving an education, socializing with others, and having teachers while different in areas of maturity, difficulty in work, and independence.

According to the textbook, junior high schools have been around since the early 1900s. Typically, it involved seventh and eighth grade and was designed to address specific needs of this age group. However, in the 1960s we as a nation started to see a transformation when society started to question certain things. Many people started to focus on what educational approaches were being offered for early adolescents. In an effort to move away from the junior high movement which created an atmosphere of a mini-version of high school. The middle school movement was created in an effort to focus more on the students. Well, in contrast, the junior high focused more on subject oriented.
Education for middle school schools in the future will have a positive effect on students and will make students excited to come to school. Middle schools will have changed dramatically by being eco-friendly both inside and outside the school, being tech advanced by assigning each student their own individual laptops, and giving their students more freedom by primarily learning by videos.
Middle school was roughly the first time I truly became aware of social justice in the world. It was probably the first real time I realized that the world wasn’t fair and that equal opportunities were not available for everybody. Around the time of Barraack Obama’s first term our country went into a recession and unemployment was high. I watched my friend’s mom become unemployed because the company could not afford to have her as an employee anymore. My family was not affected hard at the beginning of the recession, but I eventually watched both my mom and my dad lose their jobs only months apart from each other. That was a hard time financially for our family. Many people were affected by the recession, but some families felt little weight of its effects on our economy. In America, we have so many freedoms that are upheld by social justice. The social justice right that is most important to me is my access to education. I was educated for 13 years through the public school. Through United States Federal Government loans I am able to attend college. After college I will have to pay back the loans, but in the meantime the government gave me a way to attend college, get an education, and make my dream of a teacher come true. Social justice is a part of my life whether I think about it every day or not. It has an impact on my life and the people around me.
Within the education system there are two sectors which are the Private sector and the
