The Modern Großes Schauspielhaus
Styles of architectural design are always changing. As time progresses, new advancements are being made to accommodate a mass society and create a utopian design that will provide for the best possible living standards. The main qualities expressed in modern buildings are how they strive to replicate the goals and ambitions of their architects and patrons in a way beneficial to society as a whole. Modernism is a term that was invented in response to the architectural movement starting around the early 20th century to explain the dramatic changes in both technology and society. It was mainly in response to the industrial revolution which created urban cities changing the way people lived and worked. Modern architecture began to experiment with more modern concepts with buildings adoption more of a machine aesthetic by adding industrially-produced materials. The grand theater Großes Schauspielhaus utilizes the style of modernism to create a building for the people incorporating new technologies to design a space befitting the changing attitudes of early 20th century German society.
The building Großes Schauspielhaus was designed by Hans Poelzig, who had worked as an architect, painter and set designer, in 1919 Berlin, Germany shortly after the first World War. Poelzig’s work was categorized as embracing the expressionist style, but his work was uniquely original to anything seen before. Here is an example of an architect taking the role of a
Though the start of the modernisation may trace back to the beginning of Industrial Revolution. “Modernism in the design world did not exist in a fully developed form, until well after First World War.” (Wilk, 2006) Causing the great loss of lives and other countless damage to the world, it reshaped many people’s way of thinking the world. With the inspiration of early avant-garde movement, the modernism began to emerge advocating an utopian future and shared certain core principles by various styles of modernists: rejecting the past and applied ornament; forms follow function, a preference for
Modernism is a set of cultural arrays and tendencies of associated cultural movements in a changing society. It is believed to originate from wide-scale and far-reaching changes to Western civilization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries the years following World War1. Modernism involves breaking from the past set of established rules, traditions and conventions in search of new forms of expression and man's functions. New ideas in politics, psychology and philosophical theories are the main factors that led to a search for new modes of expression. Characterized by social change, industrialization, and advance in science and fueled by metropolitans and technological developments.
When Modernism was suppressed it created an opportunity for a replacement language of architecture, one which met the needs and aspirations of the Third Reich. The problem was the leadership of the National Socialist Party had differing views on what this language should be and “despite Hitler’s many pronouncements on the subject, Feder, Schirach, Ley, Goering and the other officials who became the regime’s principal architectural patrons never agreed upon a consistent theory of what Nazi architecture should be.” Hitler believed the art of his people should demonstrate that “Germanness equals Clarity”. Hitler did in his rhetoric specify and reinforce that “Nazi architecture must be heroic”. This was not however very precise, “Heroism in Hitler’s speeches referred to monumental scale
Modernist approach as almost completely dominated the Western world for the past decade; a great example is the building of the new Toronto City hall. Its futuristic a design with all glass and a lower chamber the size of a large dish has amazed many.
“Modernism was the answer to the world’s woes.” (Heller, 2012). In a way, this was true. The modernism movement in graphic design started after World War 1, influencing the world after a time of war and hardship - just when it was vulnerable and needed it most. Modern artists of the time had the opinion that art and design should echo life in the consitutional revolution and communicate with a modern audience through deeper ideas and values in their design and art works. The Modernist movement broke away from traditions in thinking, society and art. A new era was starting. The Modernism movement eventually developed into two parts - the “high” modernism and the “low” modernism. High modernism represents the intellectuals and low modernism was based to the everyday person. Low modernism also focused on mass production and accesibility whereas high modernism focused on the ideas and values they were trying to communicate and influence through their work. The movement was moving away from traditional thinking in art and society, giving a new beginning to the world of design. This was because design was needed to relate to the every day audience as well as having a deeper meaning, so two streams were created. Modernism ignored the previous tendency to only use realism in art, deeming it unnecessary and irrelevant. In fine arts high modernism was mostly geometrical abstraction and expressionism whilst low is the practical set of guides for new influences on society. But which
There were many new types of architecture styles because of the current form of buildings around. People had wanted a change, so they decided to be different from others and built all kinds of different buildings. Architects had wanted to build sturdier buildings as well because there are more and more chances of something happening to your property. It is mainly because of the oil drilling, new weather conditions, and more people coming into the U.S. and many more children being born. There is a big threat to the urban society with more people in there, there are more chances of crime, like theft, arson, and many other things. Buildings had to be sturdier and were changed because of the new building codes issued from the state it's in, and the price changed drastically as well. “$41,300 the median price of (single-family) houses and $35,600 the average, only one out of five American families has the estimated $21,170 income to buy them” (Kay). Houses were not in demand as much as apartments because of their high-cost value. Not many people could afford to buy a house because of the struggles of finding a well paying-occupation (Kay). Many things had affected architecture, however, the price of buildings had affected the architecture the

To fully appreciate the differences and similarities between Postmodernism and Modernism, it is required to understand exactly what they are. Modernism is the term we give to the accumulated creations and activities of designers in the early 20th century, who had the theory that traditional forms of literature, religion, social organization, and most of all, art and architecture, had become outdated in the new social, political, and economic environment of a fully industrialised world. One of the main characteristics of Modernism is self-consciousness, which typically caused exstensive experimentations of form and function. The creative process of generating work was also explored, forming new techniques in design. Modernism rejected all ideology of realism and prefers to reference and parody works of the past. Postmodernism, on the other hand, is a radical rejection of Modernist design. Taking place in the late 20th century, it is a movement in art, criticism, and architecture that disputes the majority of modernist tendencies. The Postmodernist analysis of society and culture lead to the expansion of critical theory and advanced the works of architecture, literature, and design. This entire re-evaluation of the western value system of popular culture, love, marriage, economy, that took place from the 1950s and 60s, leading to the peak of the Social Revolution in 1968, is commonly referred as Postmodernity which influenced postmodern thought, as opposed to the term
Mark and Wikipedia are both telling about modernism and how in the mid 19th century film yet again changed and became up-to-date with real life. Mark uses examples with films that used modern ideas. That the film Pickpocket (1959) that focuses on a man that steels form the pockets form people in the city. This film used to modernism to show how the world has changing in a more serious way. Another film he uses to show modernism is the Italian film 81/2(1963). The film is different because it's about a man making a film in a film. The film uses modernism to show women in a more sexually way.
