The idea of universal love is one that is prevalent in the media. With the news filled with grim stories and horror many people are calling to the idea of loving everyone. Tensions are high concerning race relations, gender discrimination, and sexual orientation. Many in the general public are calling for humanity to embrace humanity. Many in the general public are asking “why we can’t just love one another”? Stephen T. Asma tackles this idea of love in his article published in the New York Times. Asma discusses two different ideas about universal love before offering his own take on the subject. Just as Asma states, universal love is a myth and closer personal relationships should be favored.
In the poem The Gift by Li-Young Lee, I believe the figurative “gift” portrays a memory of compassion and forgiveness. In the beginning of the tale, the narrator recites a memory from his childhood; a memory of his father pulling out a metal splinter buried within his skin. As the poem recites, “the flames of discipline he raised above my head,” displaying that his father's anger was directed above his head and not precisely at him. This shows the affectionate and merciful side of his dad, as he was trying his best not to scream, but be there to comfort him. Now, later in life, when the once young boy is now a man, he does the same with his wife. His wife has a splinter and it is now his turn to take the same position as his father
‘In The Mood For Love’ is a Romance melodrama and is Directed and written by Wong Kar-Wai which is a Hong Kong film and released in the year 2000. The film’s plot takes place in 1962 which tells the story of two married couples that move into the residents of Shanghai living in rented rooms of a neighbouring apartment, a newspaper editor Mr Chow (played by Tony Leung) and his wife, Mrs Chan (played by Maggie Cheung) and her husband a representative of a Japanese-owned company, both couples become neighbours. Mr Chow and Mrs Chan both being the main protagonists in the story discover that both their respective spouses are having an affair, the betrayal brings both of the protagonists together to meet and discuss about their spouses’ secret affairs and practice their countermeasures with one another towards their respective spouses. As they both meet day by day, they begin to have an uncertain affair and at times deliberately try to avoid one another perhaps due to ethical concerns, and yet deeply miss one’s company. Unfortunately, Mr Chow and Mrs Chan’s relationship comes to a regretful end. The following analytic essay will attempt to demonstrate to provide information in detail about the key concepts of the film’s style and the director’s
The short story “The Love Of My Life” by T.C. Boyle's examines two couples who are imagined to be inseparable and how no love comes closer to theirs. The story follows young high school couples who are in the merge of a bright future. They are always together “wearing each other like a pair socks”. They idolized the love they share is something far from real and it is true love. While Jeremy is set to attend Brown and on the other hand China were in Binghamton things took wrong turn. Over the summer before their going to college they mistakenly conceived a baby while they are at a camping trip. The story was pleasant and everything was green and China and Jeremy went to a trip together and had sex. The couples were so keen to avoid this from
When I was a child my parents pushed me toward physical activities such as football and other sports, while on the other hand my sister was pushed toward things like music and arts. Whenever I would hurt myself my parents would laugh it off, but they were quick to aid my sister in the event she was hurt. As most people know, women and men are treated differently in how they should act. Men cannot show their emptions, while women are expected to be emotional. Society has strict guidelines on what it means to be a man and a woman, and these guidelines can have negative effects on both genders.
The book, The spirit Catches you as you Fall Down by Anne Fadiman follows the life of a Hmong family living in the city of Merced California after fleeing their home in Laos due to persecution. The main focus of the book is a little girl named Lia Lee who suffers tragedy in her life at a very young age. The book illustrates the differences between the healing methods, or medical procedures between the western culture and the Hmong culture, and how if affected Lia and her family as she grew up. The book goes into great detail when it comes to the cultural differences and the hegemony from one culture to the other.
Love can be an amazing thing and it is often said that nothing compares to the bond between a mother and her child, yet before a study called “The nature of love” which is discussed in the book “Forty studies that changed psychology: Explorations into the history psychological research,” our society had a very different understand about what caused this bond (Hock, 2013). In the book the author Roger Hock explores many different influential studies but in the section called “Discovering Love,” he takes a closer look into this study and discusses its importance (Hock, 2013). The influence of this study can be found in many different types of literature such as contemporary articles like “Building your own family,” which was published in Scientific American Mind (2014). This article implicitly provides further understand of the “The nature of love” study results and shows active efforts to continue building on the original theoretical ideas in order to change our views about human development (Jacobson, 2014). Even in modern text books like Psychology: Eighth Edition, can we find traces of the importance of this study. Thus this study not only provided a tremendous contribution to the field of Psychology but also changed society by altering its views on child rearing all together.
The book Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Coates writes a letter, addressing his son. He composed this message to his fifteen-year-old son, who that year had learned of the unjustified murders of numerous black individuals, including Eric Garner and Michael Brown; killed by police officers who received no punishment for their actions. Coates describes to his son many realities, that he has experienced firsthand, with which a black person must contend. He details his difficult childhood, living in fear – fear of the streets, fear of the police, fear of losing his body. In his letter, he illustrates how Howard University, the Mecca, and his experiences and interactions there shaped him. Another incident he discusses as one that
The feature expressing style of Wong Kar Wai is indirection. Wong Kar Wai expresses indirect character’s emotion and thoughts. Daily Love Unfolds in Everything and All Beings Love is universal. It is through the lenses of love that we create a life full of existence and aliveness. In “The Gift” by Li-Young Lee the speaker reflects back on a specific incident where the speaker’s father helped him remove a splinter from his hand that was causing him all sorts of painful forces. The speaker travels back in time to a childhood scene where he experiences the tenderness and caring from his father’s palm that has a lasting impression, which he recreates in the same act of removing the pain from his “wife’s right hand” (20).
Wong Kar Wai’s Fa Yeung Nin Wa (2000), translated to In The Mood For Love, is an opening to the new millennium and homage to past genres of filmmaking. Deeply rooted in emotion and nostalgia, In The Mood For Love reads as a waltz throughout the entirety of the film. Set in 1962 Hong Kong, journalist Chow Mo-wan moves to the city with his wife, who is often away on business. He befriends a woman who lives in his apartment complex, Su Li-Zhen (referred to Ms. Chan in the film) who mirrors his loneliness and marital strife. Ironically, Ms. Chan’s husband is also often away from business, and both realize their partners are having an affair with their respective spouses.
One of my personal all-time-favorite movies, The Proposal¸ directed by Anne Fletcher, is a drama/romance that illustrates “two people who weren’t meant to fall in love” (Lieberman, 2009). The following movie trailer assists in outlining the storyline of the movie and how a series of unforeseen events can change animosity into romantic love.
One thing that I noticed almost immediately in the film was a lack of physical contact. During the very first scene the main characters of the film, husband and wife, greet each other in an almost formal way. The husband refers to his wife in an affectionate way calling her “my dove” but does not touch her in any way, and they even stood a considerable distance apart. The wide space between speakers remained constant across conversations between various characters, leading me to conclude that the couple spoke to each other formally. Further, in the film the wife only calls her husband by his last name, never calling him by his first name nor by any affectionate terms. Toward the end of the
