Professionalism The “most critical elements of teacher professionalism can be classified into three categories: attitude, behavior, and communication” (Kramer, 2003). Other aspects of professionalism are punctuality, engaging with other teachers, respect, and appearance. A classroom where the teacher is badmouthing the school and staff that is not a good attitude for a teacher. It is important to “respect colleagues as fellow professionals and maintaining civility” (MCEE, 2015). When the teachers are in the breakroom talking about oh you got Johnny in your class well, he is a bad student. That displays a terrible attitude towards the students. Teacher’s need to model positive behavior for students, in the classroom there will be modeling of positive behavior for the students. Teachers need to “respect students by taking into account their age, gender, culture, setting and socioeconomic context” (MCEE, 2015). When teachers are talking, they need to “maintain appropriate confidentiality with respect to student information disclosed by or to parents/guardians unless required by law” (MCEE, 2015). It is very easy for anyone to eavesdrop on a conversation that was not intended for them. Then if a parent hears because they are friends with another staff, it gets out of control. This includes qualities such as patience, professionalism, and being kind. It should be common sense that if you do not have patience you should not be teaching young children. They are going to be difficult to handle sometimes and if you can’t roll with the punches then you shouldn’t be there at all. It is the teacher’s job to keep them safe. To keep them safe they need a calm environment. As the teacher one sets an example. If one is cool, calm, and collected it can reflect positively through the children. “Our paramount responsibility is to provide care and education in settings that are safe, healthy, nurturing, and responsive for each child.” States NAECY’s Code of Ethical Conduct. Patience is the key.
Teachers always have to protect themselves and the best way to do it is to follow the rules of the code of practice. Being a teacher makes me automatically an example for my students therefore I must not discriminate, abuse (physically or verbally), dress inappropriate, and be late or messy.
The teacher must know how to set the tone for the classroom and ensure that it is a productive learning environment. The teacher wants to avoid anything that would provoke them negatively as well as the students. At the same time, they must know what is needed to reinforce good behavior.

A part of my job as administrator is to work with students on keeping ethical standards throughout their lives. I work with others at my school to instill character building skills. We have a character word for the month that is posted in every classroom and other parts of the school. Part of my job as an administrator will be to work with teachers and how they relate to the students. During my Successful School Observation I was able to pick up on the teachers’ attitudes about teaching with the way they spoke to the students and about the students. Most of the teachers were working really well with the students. There were two or three who, if I was their administrator, would be placed on probation or written up because of the way they talk to the students. Belittling students is a big NO! NO! To establish a respectful professional relationship it’s important that we communicate well and offer each other help and support where needed. “You should use language that other adults (including parents/carers, colleagues, volunteers or students) are likely to understand, avoid using jargon or technical language unless you are sure they understand its meaning.”(T Kamen 2010 pg.71) Whether you are speaking to a colleague, parent/carer or someone from another profession it’s important that you are practical, you may be working with someone who is unfamiliar to the surroundings or need help to find things, also make sure you are informative, you may need to give information and support to someone regarding an issue or situation they know nothing about, act in a professional manner by demonstrating personal courtesy and integrity it’s never appropriate to “gossip” .Being Emotional have a sense of humour where appropriate being caring and understanding to peoples situation. Developing and promoting good effective relationships with the people you work with helps to maintain a positive learning environment for pupils, parents/carers and also staff.
A teacher should be committed to the school for which she is employed. She should give an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay. She should show professionalism at all times. She should be respectful to her peers and always subject to authority. She should report for duty on time.
There are five propositions that the National Board for Professional Teacher Standards has listed, which are Proposition 1: Teachers are Committed to Students and Their Learning, Proposition 2: Teachers Know the Subjects They Teach and How to Teach Those Subjects to Students, Proposition 3: Teachers are Responsible for Managing and Monitoring Student Learning, Proposition 4: Teachers Think Systematically about Their Practice and Learn from Experience, and Proposition 5: Teachers are Members of Learning Communities. The five propositions are similar to the code of ethics that are set up for teachers. The first proposition discusses the commitment that teachers are to have for their students learning. It’s main focus is that the student are treated equally and they are given the chance to learn. The National Board for Professional Teacher Standards (1987) stated “They believe all students can learn”. This statement is very crucial for teachers to understand, because if we give up on our students they will eventually give up on themselves. Proposition two discusses how teachers must know their content and how to deliver their content. Knowing your content is a must when you are a teacher, but if you don’t know how to deliver the information to your students you are back at square one. More importantly, creating positive student-teacher relationships can prevent discipline issues from arising. By establishing a persistent tone of mutual respect, students will participate in class activities with confidence that they and their opinions are valued. Students also should be taught how to appreciate the unique contributions each student brings to the class, as well as how to effectively resolve issues that may arise. I believe that demonstrating genuine respect to students and showing interest in their concerns will allow the effective use of instructional time, positive relationships to prevail, and minimal discipline problems to avail.
A teacher in the classroom setting is considered a professional in that environment because they have the training and skills necessary by which to create a setting which is conducive to learning.
