The purpose of this study is to determine how the motivation of student in online learning affect student learning satisfaction using self-determination theory of motivation of graduate students of technology management program at the department of polytechnic studies of Southeast Missouri State University. Self-motivation is a necessary factor in both online and face to face classes. It is more important for online classes because there is no second person available in front of a student as in face to face classes. Eccless and Wigfield (2002) in their research Motivational Beliefs, Values, And Goals stated that motivation plays an important role in student’s achievement. Student’s desired achievement will lead to students learning satisfaction. Motivation is seen as one of the most important factors affecting learning (Schunk, 2007). The further section of this paper discusses the self-determination theory of motivation, an instrument to measure motivation, students learning satisfaction, effects of motivation on satisfaction and the summary.

Self-determination theory (SDT)
According to Deci and Ryan (1985), Self-determination theory focus on an individual’s knowledge of autonomy, competence, and relatedness, which are the factors to raise the most volitional and most important practices of motivation and engagement for activities, including enhanced performance, persistence, and creativity.
