The NFL was founded on September 17, 1920 and was known as the American Professional Football Association (APFA). It was renamed in 1922 as the National Football League or NFL. In 1920 there were eleven football franchises to form the first professional football league compared to the 32 teams that form the league now. The original teams are: Canton Bulldogs, Cleveland Tigers, Dayton Triangles, Akron Professionals, Rochester (N.Y.) Jeffersons, Rock Island Independents, Muncie Flyers, Decatur Staleys, Chicago Cardinals, and Hammond Pros. Jim Thorpe was elected as the league's first president. In 1970 NFL's rival league AFL merged their schedules and formed two conferences in which the AFL became AFC and NFL became NFC.

Although the National Football League (NFL) seems to provide a source of entertainment for Americans, it is slowly but surely brainwashing our population. Starting in September, a great majority of the American population gathers around TV screens and crowds into stadiums across the country to watch men ram into each other in hopes of getting a leather ball to the end of a field. This occurs every Sunday, as well as the occasional Saturday and Monday night. Fans spend hundreds of dollars on game tickets, and NFL Ticket TV subscriptions to ensure that they never miss a game. The National Football League (NFL) is an example of the incredibly successful industry generated by the sport. This business has been, and continues to be, the highest earning sports league in the United States. Average revenue that a franchise earns in the NFL is 286 million dollars, with the closest industry trailing behind being Major League Baseball (MLB) averaging almost 50 million dollars less (Gaines). Another aspect to observe with this comparison is putting in proportion how much more is made per game since football has significantly fewer games. The NFL creates its leading revenue in only a 16 game regular season, whereas the MLB falls short after playing 162 entire games. The NFL has been getting a bad wrap recently. With all of the controversy surrounding concussions, low ratings and deflate gate it is about time the NFL does something good. The NFL is known for being stingy about the money they give to charity, however the “My cause, my cleats” initiative is different. As I discussed in my previous article, the NFL loves having “feelgood games.” In other NFL initiatives such as salute to service and breast cancer awareness only about 5 percent of profit was donated to the charities.

Football is America’s past and present-time, however, due to the findings of new research on chronic traumatic encephalopathy, the NFL must find ways to increase player safety. C.T.E. is a brain disorder caused by long-term, repetitive head trauma that is “now associated with such things as dementia, depression, memory loss, and lack of impulse control.” For decades the long-term affects of contact sports remained unknown and not until retired players began to express the problem has awareness for the issue increased. The NFL has made dramatic changes to the requirements for equipment — such as helmets — and to their rules to increase safety, however, are these changes decreasing the sport’s hidden affects on players mental health? Countless studies have been conducted over this issue and the affects of sub-concussive contact are illustrated in several of these research studies. Although the NFL changes rules and equipment requirements in an attempt to increase the safety of their players, it remains difficult to determine whether these changes will decrease the long-term affects of football as they appear in retired players and research on sub-concussive contact.

After a mediocre 2-2 start to the season, it finally looked like the AFC might run through somewhere other than Foxborough, Mass. But of course, in classic Bill Belichick fashion, the New England Patriots embarked on a mid-season tear and haven’t dropped a game since, winning eight straight. Players get drafted to a team after players go through training camp but when players train players have to reach the expectations of a coach and those are height, speed, and weight.Training camps last from July up until the draft in september. Terrell Suggs tore his Achilles for the second time in his career on Sunday; I think this is the most devastating loss for any team because the identity of the ravens is their defense and they just lost their best player and vocal leader on the defense. It's going to be tough for the ravens to withstand this loss for an entire season because the only pass rusher they currently have is Elvis Dumervil and in the NFL you need a Robin to go with your Batman! The Ravens identity is their defense especially now without weapons on the outside other than Steve Smith it could be a long year for the ravens but it is only week one and they could surprise by its stifling going to be more difficult.

The NFL Foundation has contributed $368 million and built 455 fields since 1973 for the kids that are in need. First of all, the NFL Foundation helps the kids with football by teaching them the basics and how to play safe and not to get injured. The NFL Foundation is also involved in many other non-profitable charities including Salute to Service and NFL Play 60. When the communities get hit by any disaster, the NFL Foundation comes in and helps the ones who lost their house and their belongings and helps them out by building them new house and supplying them with new appliances and other home necessities. One of the greatest sports in America’s past time is professional football. The National Football League is the organization that is in control of professional football in America. The team that is considered the greatest franchise in all of football is the Pittsburgh Steelers. The history of the Steelers is fascinating and has helped it become a powerful NFL franchise.

Two years ago my favorite football team the New England Patriots were having a pretty good season and they ended up doing so good that they made the playoffs. They kept it up in the playoffs and played just like they did in the regular season. The Patriots ended up going all the way to the Super Bowl. In the Super Bowl the Patriots were going to play the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks were also a really good team that year. The Seahawks were pretty good but I thought the Patriots were better. Me and my mom went to my uncle’s house for a Super Bowl party that year. There was probably somewhere around twenty people at the Super Bowl party. There was a lot of food and things to do there but I was more focused on when the game was going to start. Once the game was about to start everyone found a seat and got ready for the game to begin. The game started off good, but neither team scored in the whole first quarter. The Patriots scored early in the second quarter and I thought it was going to be an easy win at the point for the Patriots. Towards the end of the second quarter the Seahawks also scored tying the game up. Then I knew the Patriots weren’t going to win that easily and both teams were going to put up a fight throughout the whole game. With less than a minute to go in the second quarter the Patriots scored again making the score fourteen to seven. What’s being talked about is what Europe and most of the world call football, but America calls it soccer. Soccer was first invented in China in 300 B.C, where kids would kick leather balls by kicking it into a small net. Greeks and Romans played soccer for fun, but it wasn’t until the 18th century when people would start to play soccer as a full-time game. Football was first introduced to the Olympics in the 1900 Summer Olympics after the sport wasn’t in the 1896 Olympics. Women’s football, however, wasn’t in the Olympics until 1996. Many American kids and other players have played soccer in leagues by the time soccer was introduced into the Olympics, but men that wanted to go pro would have to move to Europe to play until 1993 when America’s MLS began.
