October is a busy month. You have Oktoberfest, Halloween, Columbus Day, and my birthday. But most importantly the whole month is national breast cancer awareness month. There are millions of people across the nation getting involved in this social movement for various reasons. For my friend, Kris, it is something a bit more personal. Breast cancer awareness movement is a tool and outlet to inform and express their emotions. “Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it, too.” (Society, 2015) There is a …show more content…
“Charlotte Hayley, who had battled breast cancer, introduced the concept of a peach coloured breast cancer awareness ribbon. She attached them to cards saying, ‘The National Cancer Institute’s annual budget is 1.8 billion US dollars, and only 5 percent goes to cancer prevention. Help us wake up our legislators and America by wearing this ribbon.’” (Ribbon, n.d.) Charlotte Hayley did not start the pink ribbon movement, but was more of a catalyst to the movement. “The peach colored ribbon of Hayley aroused interest from Alexandra Penney, editor in chief of Self magazine, who was working on Self magazine‘s 1992 National Breast Cancer Awareness Month issue.” (Ribbon, n.d.) But Charlotte was not interested in working alongside Self magazine, and wanted to remain a grassroots movement. Due to legal matters Alexandra Penney had to give up on the peach colored ribbon, but still wanted to use the ribbon in promoting breast cancer awareness. So they did the next best thing, go with pink. “The cosmetics industry got on board in 1991 to promote breast cancer awareness with the help of Evelyn Lauder of Estée Lauder Cosmetics and Alexander Penney, the editor-in-chief of Self magazine. When Evelyn Lauder and Alexander Penney were working on their breast cancer awareness promotion, they liked Charlotte Hayley’s concept of giving ribbons to promote the support of breast cancer awareness. Lauder, Penney, and Hayley worked …show more content…
He does his part by utilizing social media to convey his support for the breast cancer awareness movement on his mom’s birthday and also during the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Social media such as Facebook and Instagram has created a platform for him to speak to a lot of people. I asked him has anything come out of using social media to promote breast cancer awareness, good or bad. He said he got a community of friends who share the same thoughts he does on breast cancer awareness. There are a number of family and friends that have lost someone to breast cancer, know of or they themselves battling through it, and one that has survived it. He said he wouldn’t have this group of friends and family if he never spoke up about. And would not have been able to support them through using his experience to help encourage them to keep strong. He encourages people to donate to the cause to help fund the
The product of the CIBC Run for the Cure is the 1K / 5K run itself. The run satisfies the needs and wants of the consumer and the consumers are the supporter of breast cancer, victims of breast cancer, and families of the victims. CIBC’s true purpose of this event is to spread awareness of breast cancer. CIBC Run for the Cure started with community of 1500 participants, but now there are more than 100,000 participants supporting and donating to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in order to help those suffering from cancer. The participants illustrate their support through the 1K / 5K run and by the act of wearing pink. This event fosters the positive feelings experiences for both men and women suffering from breast cancer, so they can
What is breast cancer? A female’s breast is made up of fibrous tissue, fatty tissue, and lobes of glandular tissue that eject milk to the exterior. However, breast cancer occurs when the normal cells in the breast begin to grow and divide at an unregulated speed. In all honesty, I want to know more about this issue because of the proven statics. Approximately forty thousand women and four hundred men die each year from breast cancer. In this article “Our Feel-Good War on Breast Cancer” by Peggy Orenstein she stresses the significance of early detection and creating mindfulness of breast cancer. Orenstein discuss how most people discover they have breast cancer by taking a mammogram conversely the real impact is somewhat different. Whereas,
“Cancer” is the name for a group of diseases that start in the body at the cellular level. Even though there are many different kinds of cancer, they all begin with abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. These abnormal cells lump together to form a mass of tissue or “malignant tumor”. Malignant means that it can spread to other parts of the body or Metastasize . If the breast is the original location of the cancer growth or malignant tumor, the tumor is called breast cancer. (American Cancer Society, 2014, as cited in cbcf.org)
Even though breast cancer is an important issue in today’s society and there are different organizations and charities that raise money for breast cancer; the pink ribbon is something that causes a variety of problems. In her article “The Problem with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” Robin Hilmantel makes an effective argument and uses pathos to reach out to women by showing the perspective of a real person who was suffering from breast cancer, as well as use symbolism to argue how the pink ribbon is being used in a misguided way. However, she does not have a well-developed thesis and her evidence does not present any citation or where she got the information from which gives doubts on her credibility.
Every year in October, Post 9528 focuses on breast cancer awareness. This project is spear-headed by Kathy Crosswhite, an auxiliary member who has survived breast cancer twice. They spend the month of October educating women on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and on preventative care. They sell ribbons, auction off baskets, and this year are planning a dinner and ball. All proceeds are set aside in an account to help locals in their treatment and
Over the past decade breast cancer has become one of the most predominant diseases in the United States. Breast cancer starts out as a malignant tumor in the tissues of the breast which is formed from the uncontrolled growth of abnormal breast cells. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, but it can also appear in men. (Stephan, 2010)
It is estimated that 39,511 women and 410 men will die of breast cancer this year alone. There will be 229,160 new cases of breast cancer in men and women this year. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for women. My great grandmother who I look up to and is the strongest person I know, is a two time Breast cancer survivor and she believes that the organization Susan G Komen has made a huge impact on breast cancer in women. In this speech I want to pay tribute to and recognize all the wonderful things Susan G Komen has done in the research and cure for breast cancer. I will start off by talking about how the organization was founded. Next I will discuss all the great things Susan G Komen has done in the fight against breast
Churches will receive educational material from Komen Northwest NC, which discusses risk factors and the critical role of early detection in saving lives from breast cancer. Wear PINK on Sunday to show support, honor those who’ve lost their battle with breast cancer, or churches can choose to celebrate survivors and their courage. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month where community survivors are honored. All congregations
Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that begins in the breast ("Florida Department of Health," n.d.). A malignant tumor can invade surrounding tissues or spread to other areas of the body. Breast cancer is predominantly a disease among women and is the most common type of cancer among women in the United States.
“Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood” –Marie Curie. Every year people are affected by cancer. Living with cancer is hard on all involved with any person that has cancer. They will need all the support they can get even if it’s just a phone call to say hi. Don’t feel sorry or pity the person. Instead do things that can cheer them up asking how they’re doing and ask if you can do anything for them. Many find going to support groups helpful to accept the fact they have or lost someone to cancer. The awareness does show favoritism toward to
The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a health organization devoted to treating cancer and cancer awareness. It focuses its efforts to “help saves lives, get people well and to find cures, and to fight back” (Wikipedia). The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913, in New York City. It was originally called the “American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC)”. At the time the organization was formed, being diagnosis with cancer meant “near certain death” (ACS). Some doctors did not tell their patient that they had cancer, and if the patient knew they, did not tell their friends or family members, so the founders of ACS knew that they had to raise public awareness about cancer (ACS). ACS is located in many states
The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based health organization. It was founded as the American Society for the Control of Cancer in 1913 by ten doctors and five people led by Dr. Clement Cleveland in efforts to take the steps to prevent cancer (Eyre). In 1936, Marjorie Illig, a field representative and leader of a women’s public-health committee, suggested the group “wage a war on cancer.” The Women’s Field Army at this time raised money for the group and recruited volunteers (Brawley). The mission statement of the American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer, as well as, providing education, research, and service to help prevent cancer and save lives. Breast cancer is defined as a malignant tumor in the cells of the breast. A cancerous tumor develops when a group of malignant cells invade the tissue surrounding the breast and can spread to other parts of the body (Cancer.org, 2015). This type of cancer is most common in women. However, men can also fall victim to the disease. In 2015, about 230,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women and approximately 40,000 women will die from this disease (Cancer.org, 2015).
Today in the world there are many different types of reproductive cancers. A reproductive cancer I’m going to be writing about is Breast cancer. Yes, its Breast Cancer. According to American Cancer Society (2017) Breast cancer is “Breast cancer starts when cells in the breast begin to grow out of control. These cells usually form a tumor that can often be seen on an x-ray or felt as a lump. The tumor is malignant (cancer) if the cells can grow into (invade)surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. Breast cancer occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get cancer too (pg.1). Although Breast cancer first start in the breast, it can also start from other places surrounding that tissue or area.
“The term “breast cancer” refers to a malignant tumor that has developed from cells in the breast” (Breast Cancer,n.d). What society does not realize, is that men have breasts. If men can have abnormal cell growths in the breast, they are except-able to breast cancer as well. Men need to be aware of the prevention, diagnoses, and treatments for male breast cancer.
