According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, cultural appropriation is, “the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own,especially without showing that you understand or respect this culture.” The topic and term of cultural appropriation has been given special interest in the news regarding the various white pop artists and their misuse of other’s cultures and traditions. While these recent incidents certainly merit attention, the act of cultural appropriation has been going on for centuries from the theft of the Benin Bronzes to Kylie Jenner’s dreadlocks. The debate of whether this topic is truly one of issue has been discussed for years yet no real answer has come from it. To help better understand and demonstrate why cultural appropriation is a harmful act, this paper will specifically draw on the art movement of Primitivism.
In order to understand the harmful effects of this art movement, background is required. Primitivism is an art movement/artistic tendency that began in late 19th century Europe and lasted until the mid 20th century in which Western artists took artistic elements from non-Western cultures – a.k.a. cultures that they saw as ”primitive” – and used them in their art.Though Primitivism is not necessarily a popular art movement today, the artists who created it are household names.
