The Odyssey Argumentative Essay

The Odyssey, the classic epic poem annotated by Homer has been retold for centuries since it was first written in the 8th century. Each of these retellings differs from the others, they seem to leave things out or have their own little spin on them, but more or less they run along the same story line. Homer's epic poem the odyssey tells the story of the famous greek hero Odysseus. Odysseus was one of the greatest fighters in the trojan war, but unfortunately was challenged with many trials before returning home to ithaca his family, which consists of his wife penelope, and his son Telemachus.

“Thinking before acting is wisdom, but acting before thinking is regret. (PictureQuotes.com)” This quote relates directly to the main character in The Odyssey, Odysseus, who is trying to get home to his wife and son who are being bombarded by suitors to take her hand in marriage, unknowing of the return of Odysseus. As Odysseus journeys home with his crew, they overcome many obstacles with the help of his leadership and the mythological greek gods, yet lose many crew members along the way. Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus endangers many people including people he does not even know. As much as people may say that Odysseus was a great leader, there is more evidence that he puts his crew in danger absent-mindedly, risks his family to get revenge, and deals with his problematic people in cruel and idiotic ways, proving he is not, in fact, a morally good man.

Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey focuses around Odysseus and his ten-year long journey home. His son, Telemachus, has a great significance to the tale. The first four books of the epic focus mainly on Telemachus. While some might argue that Odysseus’ son is a minor character with little importance to The Odyssey, Telemachus is vital not only because he lets readers know the goal of the epic, but also because of his growth throughout the poem is something readers can recognize and relate to, as well as the role he has in assisting his father when killing the suitors at the end.

My opinion on The Odyssey is a work of fiction for the most part. The Odyssey talks about things such as monsters, god, witches, and sorcery; these are the parts I find to be fiction. Although the poem speaks of the impossible, it also speaks of the possible, such as plants that can cause hallucinations or help prevent hallucinations. In the story Homer speaks of Odysseus' crew finds themselves on the shore of the Island of Aeaea, starving and hungry, where they eat from the sorer Circe. They are "transformed" into animals; this part of the story is fiction, but some truth may lie in it. In the video they talk about how Jimsonweed is a plant in around the area that Odysseus landed. Odysseus’s journey is so long is that he is forced to the obligation of accepting the welcoming hospitality of people he meets along his path. This helps Odysseus and Telemachus learn about being away from home by some places being welcoming, and some places being not welcome. Hospitality is a way of life in a wide variety of cultures. The ways people in certain cultures act towards their guest may differ. Great hospitality has been apart of Greek culture for a good amount of time now, as it is seen many times in the epic. Characters open up their living area numerous times in the Odyssey.

The author of the Odyssey, to this day, remains unknown. Early Greeks have accredited works such as the "Homeric Hyms", The Iliad, and The Odyssey to an individual by the name of Homer. However, there are some scientists that insist these said works were product of a group of people and not one man. This particular group of scientists claims that the subject matter of the writings is too diverse for them to have been the product of just one person. Despite these differing opinions the general consensus is still that Homer is the author.
