Madagascar
Researching the numerous French speaking countries Madagascar caught my attention. Initially, all my perceptions about the country were painted through the movie DreamWorks movie Madagascar. A movie about the adventures of talking at the New York Central Park Zoo. However, after having done some research and watching the documentary my perceptions have drastically changed. Now I know that Madagascar is an island with a rich cultural history that is located off the southeast coast of Africa. Although Madagascar is in Africa in 1897 it was part of the French colonial empire. Furthermore, Madagascar is the 4th largest island in the world and home to a plethora of exotic animals. Due to the extensive array of indigenous plants and
The culture of Haiti is a various mix of African and European elements due to the French colonization of Saint Dominguez. I chose to research this culture for two reason one reason being that I have a friend who is Haitian and I never understood why she did what she did, or even her mother. The second reason is because many people in Haiti is associated with voodoo, and that’s something I personally wouldn’t get to involved with due to my religious views. Throughout this essay we will see in detail the differences in culture from ours to theirs. We will learn about their primary language, religion, their different values and beliefs and last but not least their social practices. While reading on Haiti I started to appreciate their culture more due to the fact that know.
Present Lemuroids are present in the island of Madagascar, off the shores of the African continent (Doyle). Their dentition pattern has what is known as a toothcomb (Larsen). They posses a pattern of two front incisors, 1 canine, three premolars, and three molars on both top and bottom. The two bottom incisors, and canines are long, finely spaced and procumbent, to facilitate the grooming of the coat (Doyle).
What does the average American really know about the country, Haiti? Is the lifestyle all black magic, spells, and séances? Is this media portrayal of Voodoo the only way of life and what is Voodoo, any way? These questions come to mind when someone wants to know the truth about Haitian culture and life in Haiti. Haitian culture consists of deep rooted religious beliefs, music, and Haitian cuisine.
Grade I Lemuroids Some of the greatest diversity of lemurs are in Madagascar, where more than 30 species are represented ( UKessays 2015). They have not changed much in the Evolutionary timeline. This helps in understanding primate evolution because we can study them first hand.
“I know no national boundary where the Negro is concerned. The whole world is my province until Africa is free” (Garvey). These words by Marcus Garvey perfectly illustrate the spirit of unification that characterized the attitude of many people of African Descent as a direct result of the callous treatment that Africa as a whole suffered at the hands of Europeans. Europe not only ravished Africa of a significant resource in the millions of lives that it stole and enslaved. Europe also pillaged the continent with the brutal institution of colonization. The manacles of colonization inspired great suffering in the lands and lives of Africans examples include Land exploitation, labor exploitation and most significantly exploiting the minds
They were discovered in the kindly forest in western Madagascar an island east coast of Africa. Even though they can be found in almost all parts of the forest most of them only stay in a “small space of 220 square kilometers and never near the north part of the Tsiribihina River”(Lane). But they also inhabit the Reserve Speciale d'Andranomena since they are endangered having most of them rescued and placed there. Madame Berthe Mouse Lemur’s choice of food changes depending on what the seasons are and what's offered during those seasons. Since Microcebus berthae are omnivores they will go hunt for insects, find different fruits and flowers like fruits of mistletoe, eat insect secretions, gum arthropods and small vertebrates like geckos and chameleons. The choice of their food doesn’t really change from season to season even though their choices of food is so little. Microcebus berthae is known to be the smallest animals on earth with “height ranging between 8.6 to 12.9 cm for both male and female”(Gron KJ). And With their “weight ranging from 30.6 to 71.1
In a freezing class, two brilliant minds unlocked the fiery passion that is their talent one an artist the other a writer. Bringing to light a history long forgotten creating abstract thoughts arbitrary to our own. Every religion is different, whether its origin is different or they have different beliefs. Voodoo is the most common religion of Haiti. Most people misconceive the Voodoo religion as they do not know much about their beliefs, traditions and holidays. It is a religion most known for their traditional symbol, Voodoo dolls. Voodoo, a widely practiced religion in Haiti, is one of the most misunderstood religions that have several traditional symbols, beliefs and rituals.
Even though the government of Madagascar has many different laws stating that lemurs should be protected in their habitat, some hunters have decided to go against the laws and hunt all lemurs anyway. Scientists have tried to help save lemurs by capturing them and putting them in a captive-breeding programs to help them to be able to give them a better chance of surviving (Jolly 76). There are around 70 different breeds of lemurs and about 16 of them have become extinct (Riley 6). There are many different breed of lemurs and researchers are still finding more and more different breeds every year. There are three new lemurs found off the coast of Africa in Madagascar. The three new lemurs are all considered to be mouse lemurs. They were named microcebus bongolavensis, microcebus danfossi, and microcebus lokobensis. And since the year 2000, the number of known mouse lemur species have nearly doubled from 8 to 15 different species. The scientists have cautioned that the number of mouse lemurs may be slightly altered if they find more genetic DNA that shows the other named mouse lemurs are not actually unique species (3). One breed of lemur that has been around for many many years is called the indri lemur. Although the indri has a smaller tail than all the other lemurs it is one of the larger lemurs. They also live in the Madagascar and jump from tree to tree and land on each branch in an upright position. The indri lemur also almost never goes down to the
These species of plants and animals do well to illustrate that the island is rich with species diversity and is home to many organisms. Without these specific types of habitats (e.g. salt marshes, dunes, and maritime forests), the island’s natural wildlife and plant life would look vastly different. Aside from the aesthetic value of barrier islands and potential economic gains, barrier island environments provide valuable information that is relevant wildlife and ecological management. Since humans have colonized nearly all major continents, we have a significant impact on the natural environment. Such information that is gained through studying barrier islands can contribute to better management of these environs so that more informed decisions
When I think of Haiti I think of music, waves crashing and beautiful homes and places to be but, all I know is that Haiti is in the Caribbean islands and it is an island. My parents have not gone to or lived in Haiti so my parents have no idea of what it looks like. But the thing that makes me feel bad is that people think that Haiti looks very poor but they are wrong.
I am so excited about taking this course not just because I want to enhance my writing skills but also because I want to know about the Haitian literature in general. This includes, cultural and historical events, writing masters and everything else that takes part of the Haitian literature that complement the essence of Haitians culture. I would like to learn all these relevant aspects about Haiti since I do not know that much of this country. I just know that Haiti is a very poor country where people are very in need and the government does intervene to improve the quality of lives of its residents, and that Haitians native languages are creole and French.I would like to know why the governments does not take action about it. So, in I order to understand the political aspects of the Haitian government, I will need to know about the history of this country. Its foundation, and all the ideologies and philosophies that has been involved through the diverse political systems of Haiti.
In my own belief, I feel as though Haitians handle things a lot different than other. When it comes to an individual with problems or a mental health issue, it is hard for them to want the proper help. Haitians’ cultural resistance and lack of trust in the efficacy of mental
The myth and stereotypes about Africa are not anything new and they are very present in our daily lives and the way Africa is portrayed. For example the reason why many people today think that Africa is bleak land of poverty and diseases is because early writers, historians, and geographers talked about Africa in that way. Because these stereotypes are so readily available, they infiltrate people’s daily thinking. Furthermore this makes people less likely to actually seek to really learn about Africa because they feel that their [inaccurate] suffice for their worldview of Africa. This is in turn leads people completely ignoring anything that contract their already established ideas.
Prior to European discovery and colonization, Antigua had been inhabited by a group of Amerindian peoples called the Carib. These people had their own distinct culture and way of life which was destroyed when they were forced into slavery by the Europeans. At the beginning of the West African slave trade, Africans from places such as Sierra Leone, Gold Coast, and Dahomy were bought, sometimes stolen and brought to Antigua. From the point of introduction the number of west African slaves in Antigua grew steadily. Whereas in 1670 there was only 570 slaves, at the height of slavery in 1800 there was 37,000 slaves.
