People use the media for different things some examples are promoting businesses , clothes , makeup , anything really. As social media grows and exposes the world to different things this can cause negative outcomes , especially towards the teenagers. The phrases " sex sales" or the terms " body shaming" are very real and true. Nowadays social media praises the sex appeal the use of " public figures" on Instagram and Snapchat , Twitter etc . using bras and bralettes as tops and ripped jeans that tear all the way up to the inner thighs. A well as glorifying a specific body type as a message of this is what we are suppose to look like or you will not be accepted in society. ocial media sites are described as rapidly growing platforms of user-generated content: digital images, videos, and blogs. They encompass a vast majority of contemporary websites and serve as a place to divulge in interesting discussion, reconnect with past friends or family, and even serve as footholds for important parts of one’s life through posted content. Social media sites are sitting on their throne in the fast-paced world of instant communication. However, it is also for this reason of mass communication that bring about the detriments of social media. They can often influence younger minds, specifically teenagers, into partaking in drug abuse through several forms. It is an unfortunate fact that teenagers are exposed to this type of social peer-pressure daily, through a variety of sources such as their favorite music artists. In fact, most modern day “rappers”, consistently post self-glorifying images of themselves smoking marijuana. Social media is a very controversial topic, and people constantly argue about whether social media is helpful for teenagers and young adults, or if it is harmful for them. Before I researched and read articles for this essay, I believed that social media was great, and that it was very helpful for people my age. Teenagers and young adults are shown by making positive effects through social media. For example, Brennan Wong created “Pledges for Change.” The fundraiser makes one dollar for every pledge made, and donates this money to different charities, through social media (Sonya). I used to believe that social media was always good because of the constant bombardment of good things about social media, as shown above. I believed that the use of social media was just a quicker and more efficient way to communicate with people. I thought that the only problems one could develop from overusing social media was a lack of sleep at worst, and that the pros of social media outweighed the cons. Now that I have dug deeper into the good and bad effects of social media among teenagers, I can see that many physically and mentally harmful effects can come from overuse of social media.
In today's generation there is this big attachment to social media and digital devices from teens, and in their opinion social media has made a negative impact on their lives. Teenagers today look to social media as an outlet to express themselves and from my personal experience, as a way to connect with their friends or to even keep in touch with my family members who may not live in the same area. This also forms a repetitive action of continuing to use social media which is what makes it so important to teens because in our minds- there really isn't another way to communicate with others- other than social media.
Imagine a high school student as . They are struggling and failing many of their classes. tTthey are not aren’t getting their homework in on time and are not aren’t studying for their tests or quizzes so they are failing. This student goes home everyday from school and is capable of passing and being the elite and prodigious student they can be and are not devoid of it, but is distracted by something called social media . These networking sites which minimizes their the student’s time to do their homework and study or preclude them or incapacitating their time completely. Social media is where you can go online and post pictures or look at other posts and you can collaborate and banter with your friends. This can be a very big thing in someone’s life and can also be the biggest detriment because your profile might be congested with notifications saying your friends posted something. You might go home one day and see that your friend posted something. You would stop your homework and probably check and stay there for hours. Then, you have no time for your homework. Social media can cause this to ruin many students’ lives. Even though social media can benefit students by giving them entertainment and using it for relevant topics as their school work, it is more likely to create a negative impact on a teen’s their life and career.
Some of the top benefits of social media over the years are that it is free to anyone, the content can get out to resources virtually immediately, and it can be delivered to a wide variety of people. For these reasons, communication through social media has become an extremely accessible and convenient way to communicate. It is also popular for those who need to be in contact with others. One example that comes to mind is a teenager who goes away on a trip to visit a friend or family. They can be hundreds of miles away but still talk to their parents as if they weren’t. Another example is a person who is shy and has a hard time making friends face-to-face, social media sites are a great way to meet people and build relationships.
