“Wait! I have to check my social media!” This statement is something said by most people at some point in their life or even daily. Media is swarmed in our daily lives through television, radios, broadcasts, social networking, etc. The media allows us to keep track of friends, entertain us, online shopping, being alert, and more, but can the media be bad for us with all the miraculous benefits? Media does not always sugarcoat things with violence or tell us about the hackers deep within the systems. It is important to see the difference in the good and bad parts of the media and make sure that you are taking in a healthy amount of media without it being harmful to your state of being. Media has so many good benefits, but media can be harmful with our physical and psychological health, productivity, jobs, and relationships. One type of media that billions of people worldwide are using is social media. Social media is how we create and maintain relationships online. When people log into their social media page, the tendency is to stay on for hours, post about themselves, and check up on their newsfeed. According to an article found in Media and Telecoms it states, “The average person has five social media accounts and spends around 1 hour and 40 minutes browsing these networks every day.” (Davidson) This means the average person spends around 100 minutes per social media page. People can use their smartphones, laptops, tablets, etc. to access their social media page at any
Social media is a very popular and widely used medium of entertainment in today’s society that allows people to connect and congregate from all over the world without having to leave the comfort of home. In order for many people to relieve social isolation and loneliness, social media unravels new pathways of communication and can be used to help people open up and express their opinions (Naruse). It can give people the chance to share and express their ideas to a large audience and receive feedback. Large and small businesses alike use this platform of communication in order to relay information about their products and services faster by using promotions and advertisements on social media websites. While social media has proven itself to be helpful and beneficial in today’s society, there are many studies that show how it can take quite a toll on the mental health and wellbeing of the people who constantly use it.
Social networking sites (referred to more broadly as social media) are a collection of websites and applications that enable users to swap ideas, post updates and comments, and participate in activities and events while sharing their interests with other users. From general chit-chat to propagating breaking news, scheduling a date to following election results, gentle humor to serious research, social networking sites are used for a variety of reasons by various user communities. Nowadays, nearly every person who has access to a computer and Internet indulges in some kind of social networking on a daily basis. The introduction of social media has changed the entire dynamics of our lifestyles: the ways we live, work, and maintain our friendships. Despite its numerous advantages, social media does yield some negative effects. However, the benefits of social media greatly outweigh its negative effects.
After debating whether social media has a positive or negative effect on teens, it has been concluded that social media has a negative impact on the developing teenager. Social media can be a great tool at times, by being a means to communicate with friends, classmates, and family members; It can also help spread your ideas, hobbies and life experiences. But after reading the article Studies Offer Mixed Messages On Social Media’s Effects On Young People, By The Baltimore Sun, it explains how social media has a negative effect on teens by causing them to compete (to have a better social media feed), change their body to fit into society (the ideal body shape) and the way it can makes someone feel.
In the article, Liliana Escobar-Chaves and Craig Anderson focus on how youth are spending more time on social media and how that time spent of social media is causing them to bring negative effects to society. The authors go on to explain how the trends in increased social media use is increasing the health risks of obesity, smoking, drinking, unsafe sex and violence. The authors provide an in-depth look into each health risk and provide multiple facts and research studies to help support their claims. These research studies provide a clear and excellent understanding into how the increase in the use of social media can have a negative effect on the health risks they mentioned in the article.
As defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary, social media is: “forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content” (Merriam Webster’s online dictionary 2017). Social media is commonly used in today’s society. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have taken over, building a community with many active users. Social media is especially popular among adolescents. (Radovic et al.). Further, such sites as these allow for an easy way to communicate and stay updated on the latest trends. However, it comes with many problems as well. With all the time that is spent on social media, it can make people less concentrated on the ‘real world’, and the access to an abundance of information can lead to self-esteem issues. Therefore, social media has more negative aspects than positive for the younger generations in particular.
The Oxford dictionary defines privacy as the state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people (2017). It should not come as a surprise that websites designed to share pictures, ideas, and what is for dinner, leave individuals feeling that their privacy has been invaded. It is also not surprising that some people are oblivious to the effects of what they post online. It is safe to say the loss of privacy can be self-imposed for societies need to collaborate and socialized is the reason social media sites were created in the first place. Jeff Jarvis tells the need for “publicness” or the need to be public is strong upon our society today (Berkman, 2012). In today’s technology age, when everything can be found in just a matter of clicks, it is easy to overshare. Yet the information that is published or posted on social media sites is not the only information that is gathered and stored. Many social media sites such as Facebook, collect data behind the scenes and sell it to marketing firms and other data collection firms. Every “like” or when signing into other sites using Facebook credentials, something new is learned about the user. Infringement of privacy, whether self-imposed or not, can have both positive and negative effects on an individual in a social media environment.
Social refers to interacting with others by sharing information that’s important and media refers to the many different ways there is to communicate with people. It could be the radio, newspaper, tv and the most important one the internet. Social media is the most important network. It's used by everyone on a daily basis. People have different opinions on this topic. Many think that social media is “good”, others think it is “bad” and some think it could be indifferent. Social media is positive because it allows people to connect with friends and family. However, social media can be negative because of cyberbullying, privacy and safety.
When it comes to social media, there are many opinions as to whether it is negatively affecting people or not. Social media has many great uses that we all use such as, providing a way for communication through friends or family that live afar, promote business, entertainment, general socializing, and dating, you name it. Social media has evolved into an advanced form of communication all around the world. For instance, to speak with family and friends who are far away in a much convenient way. Thus, it can get addictive to some people, which can have a negative outcome because the consumers need to learn how to have balanced lifestyle. Social media has many pros to it and I don’t think they stand for a negative side; I believe, it’s the way the consumers can make social media negative. Overall, consumers shape the perspective of how people view social media. In other words, social media is a very powerful tool but it all depends on the way the consumers use it to their advantage. At first social media was used to communicate now as the society has developed social media is utilize for different matters. For example, people use social media to advertise, become famous, make connections and even income. Social media has taken a big shift especially the way everyone views themselves. In other words, social media has set the standards on how society is viewed what is right and wrong. Now this is the way social media can have a negative impact because not everything that is being stated online is true. Social media tends to give a non-reality point to live life for the consumers. There needs to be balance of using social media and how it can consume ones’ personality, lifestyle and vision on life.
Social media is becoming the trend in this era. According to the McGraw Hill Dictionary, social media is the means used by people to interact with one another in a way create, share, and exchange information and ideas in a communication network and virtual. Social media is always doing updates almost every time so as to make the people who use them won’t get bored.
“Social media refers to interactive web and mobile platforms through which individuals and communities share, cooperate, or exchange information, ideas, photos, or videos within a virtual network” (Naslund 114). In the year 2015, over two billion people around the world had an active social media account (Naslund 114). In the past ten years, social networking sites have drastically changed the way society communicates by connecting others faster and over larger distances (Pantic). However, these networking sites have caused serious problems within our civilization. Social media is destroying society by limiting physical interactions, increasing harassment and cyberbullying, and decreasing mental health.

Social media has many negative effectsthe first impact is porn because it can damage children under age due to view porn content. The second impact is crime because crime in social media is very very high which resulted in such an online pertitusi and trades its own child. The third impact is the negative that happend in the use of social media, among others, the difficulty of communicating on face to face because more often communicate far. It can happen because we are more comfortable to communicate remotely it can happen deception, fraud it not right to be promiscuos friend.
There is no denying that within the last ten years, most of our lives have been changed by the advent of multiple venues of social media. Friends are made, old friends found, enemies are made, stars are born, elections are won, lost and tampered with, all due to the invention of social media. Has this type of media has positively or negatively affected the written word? My first thought is that it has a negative net effect on the writing overall, but as I began to research the topic, I discovered that some experts think the opposite. When I speak of the written word, I am referring to both formal writing for educational purposes and writing within the social media format. What is social networking? “A social network is a dedicated website or application that allows people to communicate with others using profiles, messages, comments, and images. Social networks usually include a list of friends, allowing information to be provided only to the people a user chooses. Examples of social networks include Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter.” (Wood)
