Media is swarmed in our daily lives through television, radios, broadcasts, social networking, etc. The media allows us to keep track of friends, entertain us, online shopping, being alert, and more, but can the media be bad for us with all the miraculous benefits? Media does not always sugarcoat things with violence or tell us about the hackers deep within the systems. It is important to see the difference in the good and bad parts of the media and make sure that you are taking in a healthy amount of media without it being harmful to your state of being. Media has so many good benefits, but media can be harmful with our physical and psychological health, productivity, jobs, and relationships. One type of media that billions of people worldwide are using is social media. Social media is how we create and maintain relationships online. When people log into their social media page, the tendency is to stay on for hours, post about themselves, and check up on their newsfeed. According to an article found in Media and Telecoms it states, “The average person has five social media accounts and spends around 1 hour and 40 minutes browsing these networks every day.” (Davidson) This means the average person spends around 100 minutes per social media page. Social media is a very popular and widely used medium of entertainment in today’s society that allows people to connect and congregate from all over the world without having to leave the comfort of home. In order for many people to relieve social isolation and loneliness, social media unravels new pathways of communication and can be used to help people open up and express their opinions (Naruse). The Oxford dictionary defines privacy as the state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people (2017). It should not come as a surprise that websites designed to share pictures, ideas, and what is for dinner, leave individuals feeling that their privacy has been invaded. It is also not surprising that some people are oblivious to the effects of what they post online. It is safe to say the loss of privacy can be self-imposed for societies need to collaborate and socialized is the reason social media sites were created in the first place. Jeff Jarvis tells the need for “publicness” or the need to be public is strong upon our society today (Berkman, 2012). In today’s technology age, when everything can be found in just a matter of clicks, it is easy to overshare. Yet the information that is published or posted on social media sites is not the only information that is gathered and stored. Many social media sites such as Facebook, collect data behind the scenes and sell it to marketing firms and other data collection firms. Every “like” or when signing into other sites using Facebook credentials, something new is learned about the user. Infringement of privacy, whether self-imposed or not, can have both positive and negative effects on an individual in a social media environment.

It’s slippery slope from here.
Most of us are addicted to the social media even me. In 2004 face book was created Mark Zuckerberg. After there were so many social media sites like you tube, Twitter, instagram, etc… Most famous social media site is Facebook, we normally call it as FB. Actually social media is affect us in so many ways not only the communication but also privacy, security are also involved. For an example if we post an update a post like “now I’m at Gallface with my family” this is a good chance for buglers to break your home. Now you can see how it affect to our security. Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram are just a few of the popular social media networks being used today. These networks are utilized by billions of users and the amount of time each user spends per day online is totally astounding. The content on these networks could be anything including photos and videos of our special moments that we love to share or perhaps content and information that we would rather not be made public. This content can be viewed by our neighbors, friends, family, teachers, students, and colleagues. This is exceptionally important to remember as the things we put online for the world to see could potentially have a lasting impact. For most individuals, checking social media is the first task when waking up in the morning and the last before going to sleep at night. That being said, there are many individuals using social media at work also. Workers say there are many positives to using social media in the office. For example, nearly 80 percent of employees who log on to a social network for work-related purposes believe it is a useful tool for networking or finding new job opportunities, while 71 percent think it is useful for staying in touch with others in their industry. (Brooks) There are others who would disagree and say that social media is a distraction or perhaps a good way to start drama. Regardless, with all
Social networking is great, it allows to keep in contact with family and friends, it increases socialization, an update of world News such as BBC and CNN. But it is not always great and helpful; we have to realize that social media also have the negative impact on the society. Many people are getting addicted to social media like Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. Social media’s negative impact is spreading rapidly; it is time-consuming, it is causing problems in a relationship, and a lot of people are going through depression because of what social media could do to their mind. Also, privacy is the big issue in social media because people put their personal information on their profile which allows others to know about them. In essence, as much as the social media has improved our livelihood in the ways we live and associate with each other, it also has daunting effects if used contrary to the prescribed means.
In addition, teenagers spend a lot of time in the virtual world, so they have the lack of the empathy to other people. According to “Miss Representation 2011,” Jennifer S Newsom states that “American teenagers spend thirty-one hours watching television, seventeen hours listening to music, three hours to watch the movie, four hours reading the magazines in a week, and ten hours forty-five minutes of media consumption a day.” Everyone can see the statics about the impact of social media to young people. Today, technology grows more and more, so social media not only benefits everyone but also negatively affects young people. When audiences watch this video, they can see the actress, the singer, and the models who have the same thing with the sexy bodies. Then, they use their sexy body to serve for their jobs and earn a lot of money to become famous and rich. For example, some teenagers who have good appearances or sexy bodies will not want to go to school or to find good jobs, but they only want to look for jobs in nightclubs or bars in order to get a lot of money or to satisfy their demands. Besides, teenagers are influenced negatively by social media through the internet, and television, for example, sixty-five percent of women and girls have disordered eating behaviors because of wanting to have perfect bodies. There is no denying that within the last ten years, most of our lives have been changed by the advent of multiple venues of social media. Friends are made, old friends found, enemies are made, stars are born, elections are won, lost and tampered with, all due to the invention of social media. Has this type of media has positively or negatively affected the written word? My first thought is that it has a negative net effect on the writing overall, but as I began to research the topic, I discovered that some experts think the opposite. When I speak of the written word, I am referring to both formal writing for educational purposes and writing within the social media format. What is social networking? “A social network is a dedicated website or application that allows people to communicate with others using profiles, messages, comments, and images. Social networks usually include a list of friends, allowing information to be provided only to the people a user chooses. Examples of social networks include Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter.” (Wood)
“Social media refers to interactive web and mobile platforms through which individuals and communities share, cooperate, or exchange information, ideas, photos, or videos within a virtual network” (Naslund 114). In the year 2015, over two billion people around the world had an active social media account (Naslund 114). In the past ten years, social networking sites have drastically changed the way society communicates by connecting others faster and over larger distances (Pantic). However, these networking sites have caused serious problems within our civilization. Social media is destroying society by limiting physical interactions, increasing harassment and cyberbullying, and decreasing mental health.
Living in a very technology based world can pose both negative and positive consequences. Some negative consequences can be children looking up to social media celebrities that are not good role models, and some positive factors may include computer based programs to help better children’s education. I will be talking about both negative and positive Sociocultural Factors in society ,and how we can potentially better the circumstances at hand.
