The Power and the Glory is considered Greene’s most renowned novel. “The Power and the Glory is a most remarkable novel, and Mr. Greene proves by it that he is the first novelist of his generation” (WALPOLE, spiritual conflict in the Power and the Glory. It is based on actual events in Mexico in 1926, when the revolutionary government of President Plutarco Elias Calles attempts to eradicate Roman Catholicism entirely. The worst persecution occurs in the state of Tabasco, where Governor Tomas Canabal succeeds in driving every priest from his domain. It is a truly religio-political novel.
It is concerned with the conflict between the individual and the antireligious state, because the Mexican government is decided to stamp out Catholicism and erect in its place socialism and atheism as guiding principles. “The war is declared, the war between the God of faith and the devil of the twentieth century” (Jones, spiritual conflict in the power and the glory).
The title of the novel, The Power and the Glory is assumed to have been taken from the last part of the Lord’s Prayer, invoking God as “Our father in Heaven: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever, Amen”. The title has a parallel reference to T.S. Eliot’s poem, The Hollow Men. Significantly, the word “power” is used for a variety of words and phrases, which means the ability to do something supreme.
