In Los Angeles, the traditional definition of the word "affordable" must be abandoned when searching for housing. If you are relocating to the Los Angeles area from a mid-sized city or small town, the first thing you should do is let go of what "affordable" means in places other than Los Angeles. "Affordable" in The Midwest and The South is $650 for a nice one bedroom apartment. In Los Angeles, $600 per month will land you in a roach infested downtown flop house or sharing a one bedroom apartment with three roommates. So, what are you willing to put up with? What kind of nightlife do you enjoy? What is your diet like and can you survive without a Whole Foods or Trader Joe 's near by? Do you depend on the amenities and safety of the suburbs?(Schools and family oriented information will not be covered in this article, because as a resident and educator, I would NEVER suggest moving children into this adult oriented metropolis) Families should head for what is known as 'The West Side ' and unfortunately there are no 'affordable ' neighborhoods out west. When a single person or couple is determining what is "affordable" in Los Angeles, they must consider location, amenities and crime rates. The following breakdown of neighborhoods within Los Angeles County and Hollywood provides insight to the eclectic "affordable" sections of town: Looking for an affordable neighborhood might lead you to Koreatown, where a large studio apartment averages about $750 per month. A low rent
The veteran teacher I observed for the 5th grade also teaches 6th grade students. She is a veteran teacher with a lot on her plate. I truly don’t see how she juggles both 5th and 6th grade students. I really think she does a good job with what she has. This experience shows me that elementary teachers really deserve more credit than they get.
Santa Clara was my go-to for living because I would be close to family and friends. Overall, the price for living there was lower than I predicted, at a minimum of $67,337. I learned that living an inexpensive life lowers your monthly costs greatly, and makes the Bay Area easier to live in. Cutting useless

In 2011, the Los Angeles Human Right to Housing Collective joined together with citywide residents to protest unfair housing practices, and increasing rents at Los Angeles City Hall. Over the past four years, Los Angeles residents have seen rapid increases in rent, which is leading to more and more people moving out of L.A. in the hopes of finding more affordable living arrangements. The three percent rental increases that Los Angeles residents are accustomed to have been climbing this past year, and in 2016 many Angelenos could be seeing a four or maybe even five percent cost of living increase. Studies from the U.S. Census will show that Los Angeles renters occupy not even 50 percent of Los Angeles county housing units. In comparison to the percentage LA renters are taking home per paycheck, it is now becoming more affordable to buy property in Los Angeles, rather than rent.
When looking at the economics within City Heights East it is 17% lower than the San Diego average for the cost of living. Yet it is 12% higher for the cost of living than the National average. Living anywhere in San Diego is going to be expensive when comparing it to the national average because we live where people vacation. Yet it is relatively cheap to live here when comparing it to the San Diego average. With this comes crime and other aspects of lower poverty level neighborhoods.
The cost of living in the area is less than the national average and home prices and rental rates are reasonable. The average rent per month is near $900 while home prices are under $300,000 on average.
Unfortunately, many of these types of housing options are incredibly subpar to begin with. The memoir The Glass Castle provides many instances of the pitfalls of low income housing options. For example, while living in Welch the Walls family lives in squalor, perpetuating the idea of inadequacy in the housing options that are available for the poor. Despite this, SROs and other forms of low income housing are still invaluable to many urban populations; however, due to gentrification, many of these options are diminishing. “Between 1975 and 1979 San Francisco lost 17.7% of its 32,214 SRO units… Ironically, other units were lost due to government-subsidized legislation which sought to provide housing for low income tenants, but its minimum property standards mandate a separate bathroom and kitchen for each unit, thereby encouraging the conversion of SROs and rooming houses into standard, and unattainable apartments.” (Erikson), this provides us with an excellent example of how urban “improvements”, even if well meaning, can actually be harmful to established populations. Furthermore, “An October 1980 study by the North Market Planning Commission found that 2374 more SRO units had been lost during the moratorium period, many of them converted to tourist hotels and high income housing
Here Zillow provides us with another visual showing the housing affordability in the bay area. As you can see most of the peninsula is incredibly difficult to afford. What is not shown on this map is why some of the green areas are more affordable. These areas tend to be less desirable places to live, whether they be less safe neighborhoods or difficult to commute to and from.
Shortage of housing supply, especially in the coastal areas, is the critical issue that drives housing affordability crisis in California. California’s major coastal metros (such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego), where about two-thirds of Californian live, is lacking in sufficient housing to accommodate all the people who want to live there . For example, in 2015, there were 133,000 jobs created in the Bay Area while only 16,000 units of housing added there . In addition, the construction of new housings in California’s coastal metros, from 1980 to 2010, was low from both national and historical standpoints. During the past three decades, the number of housing units in the typical U.S. urban center grew by 54%, compared with 32%

Matt Bauman is a junior English major at Point Park University, and serves the community as a resident educator. His main responsibility is to help and assist the incoming students on his floor. While interviewing Matt, I was able to dive into the responsibilities of a resident educator. The training to become an RE at Point Park isn’t an easy job; for Matt and many other inspiring RE’s they had to do a week’s long training that would last for many hours during the day (Bauman, Matt. Personal Interview, November 2016). Becoming a resident educator is a serious responsibility, not only was the training for this position difficult and challenging, but Matt had to learn how to manage his time and schedule differently (Bauman, Matt. Personal Interview,
A driving objective for a teacher is to affect students to advance their expertise in education by finding them the correct course. The teacher should promote positive motivation and inspiration by adhering to legislation and codes of practice which will increase every student’s focus in developing and bridging gaps to display eagerness towards a healthy broad mindset, creative thinking and brighter approach. A mentor should coordinate assessments which will reinforce the ability to perceive individuals’ abilities and knowledge progressions and moreover support them further to boost their learning capacity to acquire a well-established national standards skill set.
I began doing research for an affordable house in Long Beach. I looked at prices and interests rates on loans in that area. I looked up houses for sale on www.realtor.com and found one I liked in Los Angeles County in Long Beach California. The house has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and is 1,120 square feet. It was built in 1972 but has been kept nice and modernized on the inside. It includes a water view, two carports, a hot tub, a BBQ, dishwasher, microwave, washer and dryer, garbage disposal, an in ground pool, and a refrigerator. It also has a sewer, distract water, and a free standing gas range. The house costs $239,900.00. My affordable price range is set at $174,887.91 to $244,850.36. I found this by going to http://loan.yahoo.com/m/basics6.html. That website let me enter how much I make in a month and how much my bills are each month. Then it calculates it for you and gives you a price range.
Throughout my education, I had so many challenges I had to overcome. Dealing with school, personal life, and sports. Dealing with all of these problems has shaped me up as a person. I know now how to work for what I want, nothing is handed to me in life. That is something everyone needs to know, and now I know.
“To stimulate life, – leaving it then free to develop, to unfold, - herein lies the first task of the educator. In such a delicate task, a great art must suggest the moment, and limit the intervention in order that we shall arouse no perturbation, cause no deviation, but rather that we shall help the soul which is coming into the fullness of life, and which shall live from its own forces. This art must accompany the scientific method.”
