Since Roe v. Wade in 1973 the Nation has been divided into two schools of thought. Both sides have convincing arguments that are heard all around. The Pro-Life group believes that abortion is ultimately murder. Even if that human is not born you are killing the potential of a living homo sapien. The Pro-Choice group on the other hand looks at this not as murder but an infringement of our constitutional rights and that we are empowering women to make this a decision about their body and not to be obstructed by the government’s views.(Abortion Procon.org) Maureen Shaw is a feminist, writer, and a mother. Maureen Shaw a writer on social issues has wrote an article on how becoming a mother has “made her even more Pro-Choice.” on the website Rewire. This article describes how the conservatives in the United States and those of conventional thinking have a clouded view on why women have abortions and why they are getting abortions. Shaw’s journey into motherhood has strengthened her view on abortion and on the right-wing political ideologies to judge her motivations.

Abortion divides many Americans, it is one of the many controversial issue in today’s society. There are two major viewpoints that receive the most attention. One point of view is pro-life which is the belief women should not abort a human life. On the other side, is pro-choice which is the belief women may decide whether to carry a baby to full term or abort it. Abortion is known as the act of removing a human embryo or fetus from the uterus of a pregnant woman prior to the completion of the full term of pregnancy. There are very strong opinions for and against this issue, but no one can deny the vast gray area of abortion. Not everyone falls into the specific camp of pro-life or pro-choice. Many Americans find a comfort level in the gray area where there are restrictions, but abortion is not illegal. 1 A person’s stance on the situation is often determined by how they view the fetus: a part of the mother’s body or as a human being.

A pill can be used in the first ten weeks of pregnancy. There are two pills that end up being taken: mifepristone and misoprostol. The mifepristone stops the fetus from growing, as the hormone progesterone is being blocked. Misoprostol is taken about 6-48 hours later. This process physically removes the fetus from the womb.

This procedure is done from nine to fourteen weeks and it includes using a suction device to take away parts of the women’s uterus. The second most common abortion procedure is a medical abortion, which is an abortion pill. The medication that women will usually take are called mifepristone and misoprostol; they take these medicines within the first seven to nine weeks of pregnancy to prompt abortion. After fourteen weeks, another surgical procedure is done called the dilation and evacuation procedure. Then after twenty weeks, an abortion can be done by a labor induction, hysterectomy, or dilation and extraction. The article, Should Abortion be Legal, stated, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that 64.5% of abortions performed in 2011 were performed at or less than 8 weeks gestation, and 91.4% were performed at or less than 13 weeks gestation. 79.6% were performed by surgical procedure, while 19.1% were medical abortions,” they also stated, “an average of about 1.4 million abortions per year. One out of five pregnancies (excluding miscarriages) end in abortion, and each year 1.7% of women aged 15-44 have an abortion.” There are many different types of reasons why women want to have an abortion; some women feel that having a baby would affect their education or work. Others feel that they cannot support the child financially or they do not have the support of a father and would rather not take

In many circumstances where a safe abortion is legal, women risk their lives and many die because the obligation had not been met. An issue that bothers me is abortions. While abortions are not frequently discussed in today’s news, due to the fact that they were made legal in 1973, by the Roe vs Wade case, abortions are still considered a ‘hot topic’ in today’s politics. This is a topic that gets me ‘fired up’, because my mother got pregnant with my oldest brother at a young age. When she was pregnant with him, many people encouraged her to get an abortion, so that she could pursue a future. Due to her pregnancy, my mother had to put a pause on her education, in order to raise my brother. Despite everything people told her, my mother still managed to pursue her education and career goals. Today, she is the mother of six children and is a registered nurse.

While there are many people who defend the right for women to choose, the research on when life begins, harm to the mother, and Supreme Court rulings on death row inmates defend the unborn child against an unconstitutional death.

A deductive argument is an argument that is intended to be valid. It should provide a guarantee of the truth of the conclusion and provide the argument’s premises are true. The premises should therefore give a strong support for the conclusion such that if the grounds are true, then it is hard for the conclusion to be false (Rhodes, 2013). About abortion, many lives have been lost in the recent past. There has been a significant increase in the abortion percentage in the world with several the participants losing their lives in the process.

Many states are restricting abortions based on survivability of the fetus; however, this is left to interpretation. Survivability is not scientific and concrete. For instance, in 2012 a couple of medical ethicists argued a baby outside the womb is no different than in the womb. The newborn baby is dependent on a caregiver for survival (Weikart). The pro-life community has used this argument to defend the anti-abortion stance. The fact it can be argued also, means there is room for agreement. So, how can the agreement be resolved and allow the standard to be set and stop much of the argument? Obviously the radicals on either side will still argue, but the vast majority of the population would be able to agree if the law could be justified by an accepted definition based on scientific proof.

For more than forty years, there is still much debate over whether or not abortion should be a legal option and it remains to split Americans. The US Supreme Courts choice on Roe v. Wade acknowledged the procedure for abortion as a “fundamental right” in January 22, 1973. The ethical issues are between pro-life and pro-choice, the debate if it should be legal or not.
