Charles Darwin, a renowned scientist, wrote to the Oxford zoologist Ray Lankester in 1871 : “You ask about my opinion on vivisection (animal testing). I quite agree…it is a subject that makes me sick with horror, so I will not say another word about it else I shall not sleep to-night, ” So you’d think, that nearly 150 years after Darwin’s words there would be some change in opinion. You’d think that when a scientist’s idol shows absolute disgust for animal testing they’d stop, especially as there are more effective and money-saving methods today. Experimenting on animals is cruel and morally wrong. Even as I speak, animals are being crammed into cages in the name of medical ‘research’. Animals are very different from humans, their anatomical structures are also different, so why test on animals when it the drugs they are being tested with are meant for HUMANS? What kind of sick logic is this?
There are many alternatives for animal testing now, that are also a lot cheaper, so there is no excuse to keep continuing this horrific act. An example of an alternative is artificial human skin made from sheets of human skin cells grown in test tubes that can produce more useful and accurate results than testing chemicals on animal skin. Yet, these blood-thirsty scientists today simply refuse to acknowledge this! Ask yourself, has there been a medical breakthrough with the use of animal testing of late? Think back to these past 5 years? Can’t think of anything? Thought so. While scientist are too busy looking for the pot of gold under the rainbow, more than six and a half million animals are dying per year! And that’s only in Australia! Can you imagine what the total number is in the world combined?! Money is also a major factor. Instead of funding animal testing the government should fund the alternatives of animal testing and save money! Animal testing is expensive because merely conducting one test can cost up to $75,000, and that’s without the cost of the animals used. Experiments can use up to 100 animals!! Clearly, animal experimentation has produced very little results and should stop as there are more effective and less expensive alternatives today.
Animal testing is cruel and immoral. Do we not sometimes gaze
Animals can be burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused as a result of testing. And the list could go on forever. The way animals are being mistreated and tested on should be against the law. There is a different ways to do research other than killing and abusing animals. There are many alternate test that scientist can use to do there research without harming animals. Alternative test are defined as test that use the three “R’s”, a test that replaces a procedure that uses animals with one that doesn’t, a test that reduces the number of animals used in a procedure, and test that refine a procedure to cause less pain to the animal.(11 Facts about…)
One of the main reasons I am against animal testing is the fact that the animals don’t have a choice and are being forced to be tested, which can lead to them getting seriously ill or dying as a cause of the testing. Each year in the USA alone, an estimate of 70 million animals are taken away from their natural habitat, blinded, scalded, force-fed chemicals, genetically manipulated, and basically hurt and killed in the name of science, by private
All this is always justified by pointing out future benefits for people, but most of these tests are ignorant. Because every species have different nutritional needs, bodily functions and reactions to substances. It doesn't make any sense to test on them. That and is just unnecessary pain and torture for these beings. “Without doubt there are many experiments that will fail or lead to no use full therapy- such is the nature of all science” (“Animal Experimentation” 4). The results are inaccurate, there is a little chance of creating a cure that works for both animals and people. For example, when rabbits are tested for makeup products, people are tested anyways after the animal trials. “Vioxx, a drug used to treat arthritis, was found to be safe when tested in monkeys (and five other animal species) but has been estimated to have caused around 320,000 heart attacks and strokes and 140,000 deaths worldwide.” (Crueltyfreeinternational.org, “What is animal testing?”). Therefore, as most animals are tested for things that people “need”, that medication that is used will eventually get abused. There are cheaper and less cruel methods to test medicine without hurting animals or people, like artificial skin. I understand that scientists are using animals to “find cures” but greater of them will fail and an animal’s life goes to waste…...as this is the generation of technology. “Animal experimentation-an institutionalized form of exploitation- stands in the way of moral progress” (Haggarty 6). Animals are not needed anymore; they have somewhere better to be at, where they can be
Animal testing is a very relevant and debatable moral issue. It is when scientists take animals and run different kinds of test on them to see what reaction occur from the animal. Scientists test drugs, vaccines, and cosmetics on animals before the drug or cosmetic is distributed out for the public to use. Usually, these tests do not just involve one animal during tests, they involve many. This is due to the use of multiple animals for more detailed test results. In 2013, over 100 million animals were used in some sort of testing, whether testing for medical research, or used in a high school science laboratory. (Peta) The article How much does the public support animal research? Depends on the question, shows data that many people do not understand animal testing or are unaware of it. The author of the article, Jeffery Mervis, ran a survey, to see what people thought about animal testing. He did this survey several times. Each time he conducted the survey he would ask the surveyed a question similar to “Do you support or agree with
Others may disagree but animal testing kills a massive amount of animals, it causes animals to suffer and most of the time experimenting on them is a waste of time. Due to animal testing massive amounts of animals die. While they are being tested they are suffering . Sometimes the testing is a waste of time because it leads to no reasonable results. If you disagree with animals being tested on you should consider supporting
36 million people die per year of diseases. Obviously we need to fix that. More than 100 million animals die in the U.S. every year in biology lessons, chemical, food, and cosmetics tests. Those animals did not die in medicine research to help those 36 million people. Some believe that animal testing should be banned entirely. The truth is that we need medicine, but not some cosmetics like makeup or biology lessons using animals. This is why many believe that animal testing should be used for medical research, but not for cosmetics or any other testing. The first reason is that medical animal testing has led to many medical breakthroughs. The second reason is that animals are the best way to test medicine. The last reason is non medical tests
Scientists have a choice to make: they can choose to use animals and torture them or they can use alternatives like artificial skin from humans or animals to see how they react. Everyday thousands of animals are being tortured for science. The experiments that are performed on these poor animals are very inhumane.
Despite controversy over animal testing, according to statistics conducted by the Foundation for Biomedical Research, roughly 95% of all lab animals are some strain of mouse or rat. () Scientific researchers rely on mice and rats for several reasons, one being convenience. Rodents are small, easily housed and maintained, and adapt well to new surroundings. They also reproduce quickly and have a short lifespan of two to three years, allowing several generations to be observed in a relatively short period of time. Another reason laboratories use rats is in order to obtain genetic purity and consistency; rodents raised for animal testing can be bred so that they are almost genetically identical to prevent any bias in experimental results (Iannaccone & Jacob, 2009). What makes rats most
Animal testing is often cruel and inhumane. The Draize eye test, used by cosmetics companies to evaluate irritation caused by shampoos and other products, involves rabbits being incapacitated in stocks with their eyelids held open by clips, sometimes for multiple days, so they cannot blink away the products being tested. We do this to test if a mascara is harmful or not is dreadful. The fact that this has ever been allowed is nauseating. Another example of cruel treatment is when scientists use MPTP to replicate Parkinson's disease in a Marmoset. If we don’t want to go thru the experiment ourselves, then why should we have a living being that shares 99% of it’s DNA go thru it. We need to enforce the rules we have on animal testing or not this will continue
According to the National Institutes of Health, animal testing has been around since the days of philosopher Aristotle. According to ProCon.org, there are an estimated 26 million animals used for scientific and commercial testing in the U.S. alone. Animal testing has brought many good things to the medical world, such as the treatment various disease. Also, the animal is being tested by many cosmetics companies. On the other hand, organizations like PETA- People of Ethical Treatment of Animals have fought against the medical testing of animals. There are pros and cons that come with the usage of animals in the biomedical and cosmetic testing, and each side needs should be carefully examined before deciding one way or another.
Imagine an innocent little rabbit...who was taken to a dark lab... and had makeup viciously rubbed on their skin...burning like fire. Having their eyes clamped open with no way of freedom with irritating fluids rushing in the rabbit’s eyes blinding them. Why would people be okay with this tiny animal being tortured? Animal experimentation is wrong and cruel to animal species. Medical and cosmetic testing has been done for years and it has been a controversial issue for some time. Some people having been debating whether or not there should be animal testing for past years. As stated by Sally Driscoll and Laura Finley, animal experimentation has been used for beneficial research, but is not worth the lives and abuse of the animals. Sadly, the ProCon organization explains “how over 26 million animals are mistreated each year for both scientific and commercial purposes.” Continuing animal testing is like people smoking cigarettes. It is an issue that is just being ignored and has to be stopped. Animal testing should be banned because it cannot always be accurate, there are other options that can benefit research efficiently, and it can kill and torture animals.
Animal rights are not as protective as they should be. The topic of animal testing probably evokes images of animals being viciously injected or force fed pills. This is because it is the reality of what animal testing has been for the previous decades. Testing on animals for the benefit of humans is cruel and hurtful to the animals being tested upon. Animals feel the same level of pain that a human does, so why does it make it okay to test unknown substances on a lab rat just because it is smaller and weaker? In recent years potential animal testing alternatives have shown up, yet it is still highly underused. I agree wholeheartedly that testing products and chemicals on animals for human gain is simply wrong. In this essay I will argue to protect the lives of animals by expressing how cruel animal testing is and how it is the wrong method of testing.
Science has come a very long way in the past decade. Scientists have created vaccines, medicine, and life changing technology that people use every day. Many people wonder how these things are created. Animal testing was a major part in the creation of them, but that does not make it alright. Scientists should not test products on animals because they are put through unnecessary tests, there are alternatives to it, and the animals are put through physical distress.
The inhumanity of the acts of these scientists is by far unbelievable and they know this, but regardless they still do it. I suggest that they stop and take a break from the testing for just a little bit to brainstorm new ideas and ways in which they can stop animal testing or at the very least make it more
Testing animals is so cruel, and inhumane. According to Humane Society International animals are being force fed and water deprived. Also, to study the healing process scientists are burning animals, and inflicting other various wounds, and sometimes being purposely killed by neck-breaking, decapitation, and many other ways. Imagine you, yourself being force fed, or being burned by a total stranger, and etc. This isn’t even the end of the road of my argument.
