The world is full of controversial topics. One topic has been discussed for nearly decades among the American people. The conversation on the matters of climate change has plagued the nation. Americans have set a record high for the level of concern toward climate change. Up eight percentage points, an average of forty-five percent of Americans are greatly worried about climate change and the effects that it will have on the earth (Gallup 2017). Recently, the cause of climate change has become a hot topic. Climate change can be generally defined as the changing weather patterns over a long period of time. Usually when people discuss global warming, they are actually referring to climate change since global warming is the change in the temperature of earth’s surface, one factor in climate change. Other factors of climate change include but are not limited to: changes in precipitation, severe weather patterns, and changes in the earth’s oceans. A definite answer to how these changing factors, or whether these changes are occurring, has not been presented, but that does not mean that there have not been attempts. Many people and groups of people have offered their personal opinions. Some simply share opinions with the partisan, political, group they belong to while some spend countless hours researching to form their own opinions. This has led to a melting pot of conflicting opinions. The American people have created a divide among themselves by arguing over whether climate
Climate change has been a subject of discussion in the media for many years, supported with the use of arguments against oil polluting the environment and extreme scare tactics of Polar ice caps flooding civilians backyards. The issue has been ignored by the majority of lay people as seeming too complicated, and with all the conflicting information in the media in the past, who can blame them? However, scientifically, climate change and what perpetrates it is fairly simple to understand and society as a whole is beginning to come to a clear consensus on climate change. Thanks in part to more readily available forms of media and information, people have become cognizant of the fact that climate change is a legitimate problem which requires immediate amelioration. While this may seem melodramatic, society is realizing that climate change is an issue which can no longer be denied if the human race wishes to continue.
Have you heard what is happening to the environment? Like how Greenland loses is 286 Gigatonnes of ice per year! And as of January 22, 2017, it has lost 3778.7 Gigatonnes since 2002! Why you ask? It’s due to Climate change. Climate change is a serious problem in our world, It can either end it or make it prosper that is why I chose to research it. Climate change won’t just effect on a country or continent, it will affect the whole world, and we are a part of that world. So, I decided to research it to see what we as humanity can do about climate change. To help I asked myself more questions such as “What will happen if we don’t intervene?”, “What is the source of the problem?”, “What are our choices as humanity?” After my research, I believe that there is a way to stop climate change and to do that we as humanity need to work together.
Climate change has become a major issue in global environmental politics as it has been shown to have a correlation with issues such as deforestation, biodiversity loss, and desertification. As Chapter 45 states “The 2007 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) found consensus in the scientific community that greenhouse gas emissions have significantly increased because of human activity and, further, that the modest temperature increases we have already experienced are “very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations.” Due to this report awareness was brought to almost everyone of how serious human activity was to the global climate. In 2009, it was declared that “If global warming is to be limited to a maximum of two degrees C. above preindustrial values, global emissions need to peak between 2015 and 2020 and then decline rapidly”. To me this sounds foreboding and it is something that deserves our full attention immediately. To try and get a better understanding of how serious climate change is, I’m going to try and interpret chapter 45 which deals on climate change through 5 different paradigms of International Relations.
With the rise of calamitous news regarding extremists groups taking over certain states, countries threatening to go to war, and viruses spreading throughout the world; the outlook of humanity does not look good. In addition to these dire headlines is the matter of climate change, which, unfortunately, is not as alarming to the public eye. Nonetheless, climate change is a pressing matter as it will impact every facet of society from economy to even human survival. Perhaps the general public find climate change as a vapid subject because of its nature to react belatedly to human activity, and how it is often represented with numbers, graphs, and projections; things that are not compelling to those that do not understand its importance. Even
These last two election cycles have demonstrated the importance of climate change in relation to politics and the american people. What is unfortunate is that what seems to be a very crucial and real problem in our human survival, according to scientists, is being debated by people who do not have the scientific credentials to even discuss the science behind the reality of climate change. Those behind the skeptics, have funded a successful campaign against the reality of the facts and have introduce doubt into the sciences.
Climate change is one of the most controversial and ongoing topics in society today. Scientist and politicians alike all have opinions, but very often they are not in line with each other. 97% of climatologists agree that climate change is happening, as well as many of the large corporations in this field such as NASA, the Geological Society of America, and the American Association for the Advancement of science. Still, these debates take place on sites such as climatedebatedaily.com or the worldwide conference that was held on June 6, 2015 that took place 79 countries. Both sides claim to have solid evidence that supports their theories, but it is evident to most scientists and corporations alike that the human race is creating our own destruction
Climate change conspirators/deniers is a problem to today’s population. Climate change is defined as any irregularities in earth’s weather (NASA, 2017). Individuals who deny the scientific facts that are climate change is an interesting subset of the population. Climate change conspiracy theories typically challenge the scientific proof and ultimately claim that climate change is a hoax. The reasons these individuals give vary. For one, a major claim is that climate change is natural and not a result of human behaviour/consumption patterns. Another main argument is that the science is not reliable. Despite both, and hundreds of other arguments against climate change being proven wrong, these deniers continue to believe that climate change does not exist. The primary conspiracy theory that will be focused on is the belief that climate change is a sham. Two research questions that would help understand why individuals choose to believe this conspiracy theory are: are there any common demographics among climate change deniers; and, how is this belief perpetuated in the media?
In the news report “Climate of Doubt”, PBS FRONTLINE investigates the reasoning behind the relationship climate change and politics has been fluctuating over the past few decades. In 2006, An Inconvenient Truth, a film that called for action against climate change, gained mass attention from the American Public. However, this rally for environmental sustainability created some undesirable consequences. There is a growing movement for anti-climate change by various CEOS, scientists, politicians, etc. that have been marketing against green movements. They claim that climate change was developed out of scientific malpractice, has no scientific backing, and the bad weather we experience is no more abnormal than it was a century ago.
Even though there is evidence proving that the increasing danger of climate change and global warming is a threat to all life, anti-believers argue that although 2014 was deemed the hottest year on record, the year saw record snow and cold in all four hemispheres. Additionally, oceans are rising much less than predicted. In 2005, Al Gore predicted that oceans would rise 20 feet by 2100. However, 80% of the tide gauges show less rise than the official “global average”. In fact, many tide gauges show no rise in sea level, and almost none show any acceleration over the past 20 years (Top Ten Reasons). These statistics accurately represent how torn many are on the subject of climate change. Although there are great points to be made on each side, it is always better to be safe than sorry, and the fight against climate change, believe or not, should be in the back of one’s mind at all
The roles of science, the media, and politics greatly influence public opinion and understanding of the world around us. These three spheres of information and action are invariably linked when discussing complex global issues like climate change. However, the presentation and resolution of disagreement within the three spheres is incredibly independent. The many ways that climate change, specifically the debate on the existence of climate change, is portrayed within these spheres can greatly affect public emotion, knowledge, and policy of such an issue. This is particularly evident in the United States (US) (Boykoff & Boykoff, 2007). This paper attempts to briefly outline the portrayal and settlement of the debate on the existence of
President Trump, will the United States, will be the only government to take an opposing view on Globe warming. According to the CNN reporter, Michael Mann, Syria has offered to join in on the Paris climate agreement. Luckily, a new report released by two credible and major organizations on climate change, the US National Climate Assessment, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Mann reports, “a massive report assembled by hundreds of our nation's best scientists.” is keeping the shot light on the Trump administration.
Environmentalists believe that climate change is a significant issue that the government needs to work on it. Scientists have explained that many events including drought, flooding, severe weather, rising sea levels, acidifying rains, and wildfires have affected people’s lives and the planet due to climate change. Climate change is caused by increasing heat in the atmosphere. The consumption of fossil fuels and other emissions are trapping carbon dioxide in the air, which increases the temperature and the more carbon dioxide humans produce the more the environment rises in temperature (Meyer, 2017). The hotter temperature affects environment, economy, health, and security. For example, people who live near coal mines are at higher risk to get asthma than other places, or fishermen suffer from ocean acidification because their income is heavily relying on fishing (Frank, 2012). These two examples indicate that climate change is threatening the environment and can create disruptions.
Over the past few years, a very controversial topic that many scientists believe is a problem has been growing in discussion. The problem is climate change and global warming. Many people believe that climate change is only affecting the ice caps and polar bears; those people could not be more wrong. Climate change is affecting everyone. Climate change and global warming are not the same thing, but are closely related. This is a problem that most everyone in the world is in some way contributing to climate change; a solution must be found sooner rather than later. Climate change will ruin the earth one day if not stopped.
According to Alina Bradford in the article, What is global warming?, “Global warming is the gradual heating of Earth's surface, oceans, and atmosphere.” Scientists have tracked and determining if the earth temperature has risen or is decreasing. Scientists have seen an increase of about 1.4 degrees in temperature in the past century and are supposed to keep rising. Climate change is a huge issue because sea level is rising, Glaciers are disappearing due to climate, increasing and melting them, damage ecosystem, and also droughts in many countries. All of those reasons don't just affect me but everything on this planet. Everyone on earth is involved with global warming, For example Bangladesh, Sudan, and Haiti have all been major affected by global warming, Many of their crops are getting destroyed and floods are killing and destroying citizen homes and lands. The top five countries that are threatened by Global Warming are Haiti, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, and Madagascar. There aren't much recent development, but NASA has put out a reported saying that over the last century that we have burned fossil fuel such as coal, oil, and gasses which have increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide, the greenhouse effect.
The earth is changing. It’s not the same as it was before so many human started living on it. Our climate is becoming hotter and colder than normal. Scientist and researchers believe that our climate is changing because of how we as humans live. It is believe that the pollution that humans are producing through using fossil fuels is what’s causing our climate to change. Thes climate changes are causing the earth to get too hot. The hotter the earth gets, then the more ice glaciers melt. As the ice glaciers melt the oceans fill up and the land starts to disappear because its covered by water. In this paper we will be discussing how the three branches of government view climate change. The United States government is made up of three branches. The branches are executive, legislative, and judicial. The Legislative makes laws. Legislative is made up of Congress, Senate and House of Representatives. Executive carries out laws. The Executive made President, Vice President, and Cabinet. Judicial valuates laws. Judicial is made of court system, supreme system and federal courts.
