Designer babies are genetically engineered to fit a parents specific desires of their children. They can do things like lower the risk of disease and choose the gender of their future child. A lot of people are for this just as a lot are against it. It can benefit for health reasons and be very bad for social reasons. (Ly, 2011 March 31st) Designer babies are not yet an every day reality as the decision of putting limits on them in the future is still up in the air. In vitro fertilization has become very common among people who cannot have children the natural way. This process, allows them to select embryos before implantation in the mother. Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis allows embryos to be checked for genetic diseases before being implanted. When they use pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, they can chose the embryos that are not exposed to genetic conditions like cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia. One of the earliest known cases of gender selection was in 1996. Monique and Scott Collins wanted to have girl so, they saw doctors in Virginia to get in vitro fertilization. This was the first case when it had nothing to do with preventing diseases but ti select gender. Since the procedure is so costly, the chances that genetic division will be caused by financial division is relatively high.
