The colonies faced insurmountable odds when the American Revolution began, but were able to successfully overcome the most powerful army and navy in the world through contributions such as George Washington’s extraordinary qualities, having knowledge of the lay of the land, gaining foreign assistance, and having the colonist support the cause. George Washington possessed great leadership abilities that led to him being designated the General and Commander in Chief of the United Colonies. He was a Southerner who was very trustworthy and fearless. He had already proved his military abilities and was wealthy enough that he would not be tempted by corruption. He was able to attract soldiers and civilians to volunteer their civic duties and stand by him for the long haul, having a long term goal in view. He led his troops by example. Their first and largest disadvantage was that the war was being fought on American land. The British had to send all of their supplies (food, clothing, weapons, and troops) by ship across the ocean. These ships rarely were able to reach America before being confiscated or destroyed, especially after France and Spain joined the Patriots in the fight. Used to fighting in open, flat terrain the British was unable to use the tactics they were accustomed to. The impassable forest, mountains, and swamps were very foreign to them. Even if the British were able to subdue the territory, they did not have enough troops to occupy and control it due to the very large and spread out lay of the land. By no means, the colonist had all the advantages when geography came into play. They knew the quickest most vulnerable route in which to ambush the British in guerrilla
