The Pros And Cons Of Gun Control

Gun control has been a long debate to determine if it’s better to have stricter access to firearms. America is one of the few countries that has gun rights embedded in their constitution. But what makes the US exceptional is that it has the right to keep and bear arms, other countries do not provide the right to have access to them, but rather, the government is allowed to regulate its use. The right to bear arms has also been the cause of growing violence and crime, at least according to anti-gun lobbyists. Citizens should be aware the dangers and harm that guns present to society. Controlling the sale of firearms can greatly decrease the number of violent crimes.

The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Courts have universally agreed, however, that the right provided by the Second Amendment is not absolute and that many kinds of gun legislation designed to protect public safety remain valid ("Gun Safety & Public Health," 2013). Gun Control is one of the most debatable topic in the United States for the past several decades. America has witnessed assignation to mass shootings. Every time violence and guns are a factor of traumatic events the ongoing topic of gun control reemerges. The question that is asked is if our nation should enforce stricter gun laws. Would these new gun laws contribute to the decrease of gun crime in our nation? American citizens stand divided on this issue; both sides taking a strong position as what they strongly believe what should be done about guns.

There are many Americans who are opposed and many who are for the control of firearms. Farago gives an example of how president Obama created more gun control laws but he goes on to saying that with or without laws, criminals are still going to shoot or rob innocent people. He also gives reasons on how a law cannot prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands. Firearms are the cause of death for more than 31,000 people per year, making it the 2nd leading cause of death for people ages 15-24 (National Center for Injury Control and Prevention). As the debate over gun control continues to spread throughout the nation like the plague, everyone is trying to choose a side. Some argue that their Second Amendment Rights are being infringed on, however, when looked at in detail that is not the case. Many others argue the regulation of guns is not beneficial because criminals are okay with doing illegal things, therefore they will obtain guns anyway. There is much, however, to disprove that. These weapons are the reason why the United States has such a high rate of violence even with such high wealth. Criminals should not have the access they currently have to such destructive weapons. Gun control must be put in place in order to decrease much of the violence and death by firarem that the United States has.

For many years the controversial topic of gun control has sparked countless passionate debates. The arguments posed in these debates vary widely concerning the possible solutions to solving the problem of violent crime due to the possession of firearms. This paper introduces three different views concerning gun control. The first illustrates the freedom to own firearms. The second view advocates the complete restriction of firearms owned by citizens, and the last one presents a modified freedom of possessing firearms. Each faction seeks to have its position supported by national legislation.

Since 1791, the United States has allowed citizens the right to bear arms; citizens have depended on the ability to carry and use firearms. What if that just, went away? Every citizen would give up their firearm and there would be nothing for civilians to use to protect themselves with, at least, not something that they are used to carrying or having in their homes. The government should not restrain the ownership, the use, or the concealed carry of firearms for the reason that owning guns has shown to lower crime rates; keeping guns prevents the Second Amendment from being violated; and banning guns does not prevent criminals from disobeying the law.

Gun control is an extremely argumentative social issue in the United States. Many people support of gun control, these people want stronger laws to ban certain groups from bargaining and buying weapons and use those in the public. They have many reasons for gun control because as citizens, they want a safe and secure society for their families. Although, there are some groups who are not satisfied with this decision and have their reasons. They believe, using gun in the public is necessary. One of the reasons they have is, in case if the mass shooting happen they can defend people in this risky situation. This is logical, if citizens want some rights to have gun and wants safer life for their families, but at the same time gun rights can make tragedy for many other citizens. The government has to find a law that can protect all or majority of citizens. Many mental problems or unhappy people live in this society and they want to have gun and they believe this is their right per second amendment of the Constitution. For that reason maybe they want to use their gun and bring awful tragedy to other people. Killing or hurting people is not second amendment of the Constitution, so the society need stronger law that can control the society. This is obvious that the law has to control the act of the people in the public not the emotion of the people.

There has been much controversy over gun control. The posing question is: will gun control help our country and should it be allowed? Some people believe that more laws and restrictions on the purchase of guns would help our country stay safer. Others claim that gun ownership is a constitutional right and that restricting access to guns violates this right. The debate about gun control should not be taken lightly, for the lives of the American public are at stake. Gun control is not the answer. Our nation needs to closely look at what motivates individuals to use guns for killing, and find methods to solve the underlying problem. This will ultimately keep the people of the United States safe.

Supporters of a ban say that assault weapons are classified as weapons with one or more military features such as a high capacity clip or a folding stock (Lott 1). Opponents argue that this will take defense weapons out of the hands of law abiding but it will do little for stopping criminals. Some citizens feel as if weapons are too easy to attain, and, due to the poorly structured weapon system, more shootings have occurred. However, people who oppose gun control argue that guns are not the problem, but the people who have them are. The topic of gun control is hotly debated because it includes the issues of violence and as well as issues of personal defense. Gun control must be more strictly composed through more thorough criminal background checks and analytical interviews of people buying guns, thus preventing those with criminal records or with malicious intent from purchasing a weapon.

Stories of self-defense are far less common than the gun crime stories that generally make the headlines. However, according to criminologist Dr. Gary Kleck, there are “2.5 million cases of guns used for self defense annually, compared to 0.5 million gun crimes” (qtd. in Loesch 219). Gun regulation has been a serious controversial topic over years. Politicians from opposite parties always have extensive debates about it during election time. Advocates for gun right believe the ability to own a gun gives people protection. Advocates for gun restriction believe guns are weapons and would do more harm than good. In the past years, the deathly incidents involving guns have significantly increased. Shooting in Orlando and the shooting in Dallas are one of the most memorable events that has happened over the past six months. Often it is done not only by mundane individuals who nobody would imagine are capable of undertaking such dangerous act, but also due to easy availability of guns.
