Public pensions are under attack as legitimized grifters on Wall Street seek ways to lay their hands on the hard earned money of those that actually save securely for retirement. Private pensions are virtually nonexistent, and the up-and-coming generation faces a monumental retirement crisis.
Back in the 1980s, financial advisors peddled the 401(k) as the next great thing in retirement. The 401(k) contribution plan was initially intended to supplement the pension benefit and was never meant to be a sole means of sustaining oneself during the so-called Golden Years. However, Americans were sold (down the river).
The responsibility of 401(k) investing depends on employers and employees, and lack of expertise in finance has proved to be
The documentary, The League of Denial examines the issue of brain injuries in the National Football League. The film devotes most of its attention to the story of Mike Webster, who died at the age of fifty as a result of severe brain injuries suffered throughout his playing career. Webster’s story highlights the devastating effect concussions can have in a short timeframe. Because brain injuries are known to develop quickly it is important that the NFL responds quickly to this concussion crisis. The NFL is the most popular professional sports league in the world: according to Forbes Magazine the NFL generated over $9 billion in revenue this past year. Despite this success the NFL faces a legitimate threat against brain injuries and concussions. Although the NFL is popular, they should still be proactive in their fight against concussions because of the amount of money they generate, the health of their former players, and lastly the willingness of future athletes to play their sport.
Concussions are a rising issue in the daily life of many athletes in the sports of hockey, soccer, football, and skateboarding. Every 21 seconds, someone in this country encounters a brain injury. Concussions are brain injuries caused by jolts or hard hits around the head. When the tissue of the brain slams against the strong, thick skull in your head, a concussion is very common. This leads to either swelling of the brain, “torn blood vessels, or injury to the nerves.” (Haas) Eventually, the result will be immediate, delayed, or even permanent loss of your own brain. In the next four paragraphs, I will describe to you how a concussion is important to you and others, what the world can do to stop this issue, and what you can do to prevent
In the sports world today, there are many different injuries that athletes experience and one of the most devastating injury is a concussion. Concussions can happen to anyone, in any sport, but we tend to see most concussions in contact sports (Świerzewski 1). While having an informal conversation with my dad about football, he told me it was common for athletes to receive a head injury in a game and continue to play as if nothing was wrong. While watching SportsCenter, I found that some of the greatest retired athletes don’t remember the best moments of their careers due to the lack of treatment. The worst aspect of concussions is that the symptoms can be delayed; in some cases, it’s only a headache so athletes don’t seek medical treatment. Multiple concussions over time can lead to life-threatening complications due to the damage they cause to the brain. Concussions can happen to anybody at anytime, but there is more to concussions than meets the eye.
Recently, an enormous amount of attention has been given to the long-term effects caused by a concussion. Despite the fact that the understanding and awareness as to the severity of this traumatic brain injury (TBI) has greatly improved, concussions are commonly disregarded, undiagnosed and/or under-treated. Unlike an external injury that is easily seen, a concussion is an internal brain injury; therefore, without the use of diagnostic imaging, the concussion itself is invisible. However, symptoms can be helpful in diagnosing a concussion when diagnostic imaging is not readily available.
It happens so quickly that you can’t even comprehend it, it’s a quick flash and then it’s like your whole world got turned upside down. Some people call it “seeing stars” or “blacking out.” A temporary blow to the head that causes unconsciousness is called a concussion, and they are becoming a serious issue in sports. The term “Concussion” was used pretty loosely back in the 1950’s. This became a serious issue around the early 1990’s and is now one of the most serious issues in today 's sports. Some myths have been brought up about concussions and many researchers decided to test them out and see if they are fact or fiction. Karen Schrock discovered six things about concussions that are true and many people don’t know them. In my own opinion, three out of the six are kind of common sense, but the other three are more unknown true facts about concussions.
In recent years concussions have become more and more of a topic due to their effects on the people who receives them. Concussions can cause a multitude of problems for a person later in their life whether they suffered from a major concussion or just a minor concussion. These problems can occur if a person ended up with multiple concussions over a lifetime or if they only have had one single concussion The problems a person can encounter are all somewhat connected but very diverse at the same time. Most of the problems a person will encounter will be due to a change in that person's brain but they can range from simple memory problems to suicidal problems.

Almost everyone who has played on a sports team at some point in their life can say they sustained an injury at one point or another. Sometimes these injuries are completely unpreventable and the only thing that can be done is being more aware of that certain injury. Concussions in high school sports is a prime example. This because the potential negative effects of a concussion can be life altering. The effects of sustaining a concussion during high school can be worse than sustaining one in college or in professional sport because that is most crucial time in the brains growth.
A great deal of attention has been conducted on concussions in recent years, along with that has come amassed research that is being done by people all over the world. Every Doctor I have ever counseled with about concussions has said we learn something new every day about concussions. The surface has barely been broken when it applies to knowledge and understanding of concussions. Through my own personal turmoil and experiences I have undergone, I have cultivated many valuable things. The most crucial and valuable advice I could give anyone about concussions is, if you have suffered a concussion do not put yourself in a high risk environment where hitting your head is a possibility until your brain has fully healed. If you just do that, chances are you will heal just fine and heal in the normal recovery period.
A concussion is a matter of the player's lifestyle and whether or not they play for the rest of their career in sporting. This can all be avoided though if when the injury occurs they sit out longer, instead of hopping back into the game before healing is dry and damage it more because of some petty faults and ideals. This is valuable because the damage is permanent and that is a faulty way of living when it'd have been avoided. The first concussion only opens a gate for more damage to be done to the brain which has only so much defense and the idea of amnesia or other forms of memory loss that would be gathered if not dealt with in rest. These are worthy points to heed as the details are thickened to have you hear and read and only you can decide as this is only a paper not the government.
Once flippantly referred to as having one’s bell rung, mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) or concussions are no innocuous contusions. Annually in the United States, approximately 1.7 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury that is confirmed through diagnosis. Of these, roughly 75% are categorized as mTBIs or concussions, although the total number of concussions may be slighted considering 81-92% of these injuries do not result in loss of consciousness. Recent controversy concerning professional athletes and their mental health has brought to light evidence that concussions may cause severely deleterious effects on a person’s wellness in later life. This poses the question, to
In this article the author talks about recent studies in concussions, that show they may be more damaging to the brain than previously believed. Typically, after 7-10 days, concussion patients are considered good to go, simply because they have stopped exhibiting the symptoms of a concussion. Recently it has been discovered that structural changes to the brain caused from the concussion can last over 6 months to unknowing patients. The main structure of the brain effected is white matter, which is made of nerves and considered connective tissue. White matter is very important because it is in charge of sending messages throughout the brain. These recent findings have made doctors rethink when they should be clearing patients- Should they
When I was in sixth grade I had trouble focusing and I would always get bad headaches. I was playing football then and when I got hit, it was the worst pain I had ever dealt with in my entire life although no one could tell me why. Everyone thought I had concussions, but I did not have the symptoms of a concussion at all. There was a spot on the back of my head that was about the size of a dime at first. My mom noticed it at the end of October while giving me a haircut and just thought it was a calcium deposit. In the next month it had grown to the size of a quarter, so I went to the doctor. This is when I found out I had a tumor growing with cancerous cells on the outside of my head.

They do this from age 30 to 70, getting 12 percent interest per year.
