During the mid 1990’s the internet finally became accessible to the average person. This new media was not just for universities, large companies and the military anymore. In the initial stages however it was more of a curiosity, than a means to increase productivity. By the early 2000’s however, the commercial internet began to show its worth and created an economic boom, even after the so called dot-com bubble. Like all new and revolutionary advancements in technology the were bound to be some pitfalls. One of the most prevalent concerns today is that of security, both public and private. From an individual perspective, a person has one main concern and that is privacy. Identity theft is one of the most common digital crimes that is committed. The illegal use of another persons credit cost the United States economy 16 billion alone in 2016. The second issue is online tracking, whether it is by the government, business or another individual. There are very few people that would feel comfortable with the idea of someone watching their every online move.
In the public sector the concerns are centered around the safety of the nation as a whole. The conflict arises when the governments desire to protect the public compromises the rights of privacy of the individual. One of the first major pushes by the United states government to protect national interest came in the form of the Cybersecurity Act of 2012. The bill however was stopped in the senate by a 52-46 vote. There were
The Internet is today’s encyclopedia. Information about any topic may be discovered with a quick type of a few keywords in a search bar and a click of the search button. The Internet often receives the world’s breaking news at the same time, or even before, as the major news networks. It has become the source that informs people about the current news; someone could find a billion articles about the breaking news within a few seconds. It also provides the user with convenience. For example, one may go directly to their desired article at any time instead of waiting for the scheduled news time and having to listen to all of the reports before hearing the one they wanted. The Internet is not only used to discover the recent news, it can also be used for research regarding history. The Internet may prove as a very valuable asset while writing a research paper on a specified topic on which you do not possess much knowledge. For example, the Internet would be advantageous to a student writing a research paper about black history and the civil right movement if the pupil had never heard of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Internet is not only used for productive reasons; it may also be used for recreational purposes. For example, one may go to YouTube and watch silly videos just for fun. Someone having such easy access to information is not always a good thing. In today’s time, people are careless about what they post on the Internet. Some people release their personal information like their full name, address, contact number, birthday, and social security number. Some may find disclosing this information harmless; however, the owner of this information may suffer dire consequences it enters the wrong hands. The exposure of this information puts the person at risk for identity theft. For example, someone’s credit may be ruined of the wrong person gets their person information. The Internet
The concern about privacy on the Internet is increasingly becoming an issue of international dispute. ?Citizens are becoming concerned that the most intimate details of their daily lives are being monitored, searched and recorded.? (www.britannica.com) 81% of Net users are concerned about threats to their privacy while online. The article encourages the readers to question existing laws that protect our privacy and security as there is no boundaries in the internet to prevent people from hacking into your personal
Internet and social media have allowed people to stay connected more easily with others but unfortunately for some it has done the complete opposite and has made them lonely and isolated due to their virtual lives. Social isolation has become a problem in our society. Some people seem to lack the skills necessary to carry on a normal conversation with another person face to face due to them relying on social media. “I don’t know a more urgent problem than this,” Harris says. “It’s changing our democracy, and it’s changing our ability to have the conversations and relationships that we want with each other” (Lewis, 2017). When people find themselves in a social setting that is uncomfortable, people often turn to their smart phones for a way to escape from the situation. An example of this would be, texting someone in order to avoid the conversation that is going at that moment. Social media provides some people with the belief that they are socially connected, for example having lots of “friends” or “followers” may give someone the impression that they have the same type of friendship they have with their family and good friends. People need to remember the value of honesty and practice being honest with their selves and others. At times this can be hard especially for someone who is experiencing isolation issues, so it is important for those around them to show them the truth and help them get on the right path again. An example would be for someone to reach out to their friend or family member and show them that all their “friends” on social media are not truly their friends and could lead them down the wrong path and get them into trouble. Unfortunately isolation can cause depression especially when the person realizes they have been isolating themselves or come to the realization their social media friends are not truly their friends or have their best interest at heart.

Examples of internet risk include identity thieves, phasing, and scams. Due to things such as online shopping, banking and other e-commerce options, personal information is stored in the internet enabling many cybercrimes to occur. Cybercriminals tend to attack users based on their emails, social media accounts, and web history because the most history about an individual is stored in those sites.

This is exactly what people do every single day when they are on the internet signing up for online banking, social networks, and even online shopping. The effects of the internet on me and this society have been rapidly changing. Did you know that approximately 3.2 billion people use the internet, about 200 billion emails and 3 million google searches would have to wait if the internet was turned off for one day. Let me tell you about something that happened when i was little, it might be off topic a little but when i was little i was born backwards, meaning i came out legs first. My hips were out of place and until i was about 2. My dad is always on the internet and loved taking pictures of his “Little princess”, the pictures can still be found on facebook along with a lot of other things from my family memories. That was when i started wanting to get on the internet, i asked for a facebook and they said no, being a rebel i made one anyways just to play the games on it. The internet can have positive and negative things about it for younger and older people, for example the internet engines are one of the best information givers out there, they bring almost everything and anything to a lot of internet users that lange from all over the world. The internet can provide ways to communicate with family and friends from a long distance, and even meet new people. Bad things about it is people sharing and storing illegal information on the internet, much like the dark web. The addiction to the internet and the online network can be disturbing a person's way of living and professional activity.
The internet has evolved from being a symbol of great revelation and innovation to a part of everyday life. It is used constantly to gather information and to make everyday tasks effortless for people worldwide. As such, having broad access to the internet causes internet users to rarely think about the consequences of putting their personal details on there for all to see. The conversation about internet regulations or internet privacy has been going on for years. It seems to be a never-ending debate about whether individuals should have complete internet privacy or no privacy at all.
