1. The Protestant Reformation Produces Puritanism
1. In 1517, German friar Martin Luther declared that the only source of God’s words was the Bible. By doing that, he denounced the authority of the pope and priests. This started the “Protestant Reformation”
2. In 1536, John Calvin from Geneva, wrote a doctrine in Latin which was entitled “Institutes of the Christian Religion”. There ideas formed a new, predestination supporting religion called Calvinism.
3. In the 1530s King Henry VIII broke off al ties with the Roman Catholic Church and formed the Protestant Church of England, which was the first step in turning England protestant.
4. People who wanted England to become Protestant faster were called Puritans.
5. Separatists were a small group of Puritans who broke away from the Protestant Church of England.
6. King James threatened to banish the Separatists from 1603-1625 due to his fear of being denied as not only a political leader, but a spiritual leader.
2. The Pilgrims End Their Pilgrimage at Plymouth
1. In 1620 a group of Separatists from Holland came to Plymouth Bay and illegally settled there. They left Europe in search of religious freedom.
2. Before leaving the Mayflower, the illegal settlers signed the Mayflower Compact.
3. The Compact was an agreement to form an unrefined government and be a democratic settlement (majority rules). 41 of the Adult males on board signed the Compact. This was the first attempt in government in the Americas.
4. In the winter of
The pilgrims sooner than later found out that they were not the only ones to be staying on the new piece of land they had
During the early 1600s the religious climate in England played a main role on Puritans moving out. During this time the church and government weren’t separate, meaning citizens had no choice but to follow the Church of England. The Church of England at this time began to break away from the Catholic Church and introduce changes to the protestant religion (Bruno 2). Despite the new reforms, Puritans still felt that the church still had too many ties held on the Catholic Church. Consequently Puritans, as well as other religious groups, began to form their own protestant faith.
extreme Puritans, or Separatists. This led King James I, who reigned from 1603-1625, to believe
The break from the Catholic Church began when King Henry VIII came into conflict with the Pope over the divorce he wanted to obtain from his wife Catherine of Aragon. After several years of bickering with the Papacy, Henry VIII eventually separated from the church of Rome to the church of England. But this new entity, the church of England, was basically the Catholic Church without the Pope and the monasteries. For the rest of the reign of Henry VIII, and that of following Tudor monarchs there would be vicious competition between the new Protestants and Catholics for supremacy. There was also dissension among the Protestants themselves over how far the reform of the Church should go, and over the course of some years a split began to form between the members of the Church of England.
Separatists- Separatists are a group of people that are also known as “English protestants.” Their goal was to separate themselves from the church of England, whom they had been defying for years. Although they didn't believe everyone deserves religious freedom, the reason for leaving the Church of England was for them to be able to believe what they wanted.
Separatism is mentioned often throughout the story also. Separatism is more directed to people who believed that religion should be viewed perfectly. Puritans and Separatists often had the trouble of getting along just because of the differences between the two. Instead of being in one church like the puritans preferred, the separatists believed in forming multiple churches and believed that religion should be spread out. John Winthrop was a Puritan who wanted to share his religion. Since there weren’t many puritans in England, he wanted to form a new colony where he could have strictly just Puritans. This new colony was labeled the “new world” also known as, the Massachusetts Bay Colony. John ended
The Protestant Reformation was a major 16th century European movement aimed initially at reforming the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. The Reformation in western and central Europe officially began in 1517 with Martin Luther and his 95 Theses. This was a debate over the Christian religion. At the time there was a difference in power. Roman Catholicism stands with the Pope as central and appointed by God. Luther’s arguments referred to a direct relationship with God and using the local vernacular to speak to the people. Luther’s arguments remove the absolute power from the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church in general. The revenue from the taxes paid to the Church would be reduced with Luther’s ideas, in part because of
In the late 1700’s, the main conflict throughout the Atlantic was freedom to all. This period showed many views from different people in ways in which they tried to express the word. People in the America’s and eastern nations such as France were trying to rebuild their nations with an idea that all men are created equal, that they are given the right not from authority, but by birth. From the “Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen” in France which was their laws to give men freedom, to a wealthy man in Venezuela named Simon Bolivar who helped free his country from Spanish rule only to struggle with making his country a federation after the destruction, you see that freedom is hard to concur. Independence cannot only be observed
The Reformation, originated in the early 1500s by the German Martin Luther, who preached salvation by faith alone. Luther kept his faith under his hat until 1517,
wanted to get away from Great Britain to purify their faith and religion, they didn’t agree
Because of all this, it would make sense for protestants to want to leave. They couldn’t practice their religion, their kids were growing up to be filthy and corrupted, the examples set by those officials in England were horrible, and there was no place for them in England. The Puritans believed that the Lord even persuaded them to go. He wanted them to leave and go on their own. They believed that he not only approved of the enterprise, but allows people to get interested in it. At this point, it may seem that the Puritans are going to be good people, but that is wrong.
Martin Luther . He declared that the Bible alone was the source of God's words. He started the "Protestant Reformation."
To begin, the Protestant Reformation began in reaction to the Catholic Church’s rather corrupt practices. Prior to the Reformation, the only major Christian denomination in Western Europe at the time was Catholicism, headed by the Pope in Rome. Through many acts of violence such as the formation of the Spanish Inquisition and the slaughter of the Cathars, amongst others, Europe’s Monarchs had wiped out and suppressed any form of religious competition. With the Catholic Church holding a tight stranglehold over Europe, Catholicism was the only option. This allowed
The community of people known as the Scrooby Separatists marks an important milestone an American and religious history. This group of pilgrims came from Scrooby, Nottinghamshire in England in hopes of finding someplace where they could practice their religion freely without fear of being prosecuted. These separatists believed that there was no hope of reforming the Church of England and that they had to reform themselves completely to create the religion that they thought was divine. As a result, they escaped to Holland where they could practice their religion as they pleased. This venture, however, was dangerous as it was illegal for them to leave England due to it being treason. As time went on though, it got harder to live in Holland and
Some people believed that freedom was breaking away from England and creating their own new colonies.
