The Renaissance Time Period

The Renaissance is known to many as the rebirth of society and the revival of classic learning. It opened the doors for new and improved ideas in writing, composing, and painting. This period of time effected society in many positive ways because of the newer advantages being made for the future to come. The literature, music, and art of the Renaissance had a great impact on society.

Italy can be looked at as the home of the renaissance and consequently the immergence of great art. Artists such as Michelangelo, Botticelli, Da Vinci, and Raphael are some of the greats and are looked at for standards. But what about the artists whose lives are mysteries, and their works that were influenced by the greats? These artists hold just as much importance in the history of art as do the artist’s whose names can be recalled off the top of an average person’s head. During the sixteenth century things began to change in the art world, and that change was the Baroque. This new style of art brought a revolution to how subject matter was painted, it brought upon “… a radical reconsideration of art and its purposes…” (249) and how artists of all ranks could learn to paint the up and coming style of Baroque.

The Renaissance was a time of growth in the liberal arts. It started in the Italian City states as trading brought huge profits to all the city states, especially to Venice and Genoa. Due to the profits from trading, and to the regrowth of some other industries that had been devastated by the social upheavals of the fourteenth century, the Italian city-states became extremely prosperous. The richest in Italy who were the ones benefiting from this prosperity, such as the Medicis, became great patrons of the arts, allowing art to flourish in Italy as it had never done since Greco-Roman times. Because of individualism and humanism, Renaissance art started to emphasize mathematical perspective to art which gave art an element of 3D. New thinkers with new ideas also started to emerge such as Petrarch, who promoted humanism, the belief in the power of the individual and in the revival of ancient Greco-Roman texts and beliefs. (H) For the world to change, people need to change. This is exactly what happened from AD 1400-AD 1600, which we now call the Renaissance. (O)The fall of the Roman Empire lead to the 'Dark Ages' where people began to decline any new changes. Then, in the beginning of the fifteenth century, people began to change their outlook and look toward the Ancient world of Greece and Rome with admiration. This lead to a 'rebirth' of greatness, the Renaissance. (T)The Renaissance brought a brand-new way of thinking, new inventions and art based off of ancient designs, and major developments in the science, math and technology world.

The Middle Ages and Renaissance were two very different periods of time. Throughout the Middle Ages, it was believed that God was the ruler, and almost everything in life was based around religion. Illiteracy was also very widespread, unless one was a religious figure. For example, priests and monks were basically the only literate people during the Middle Ages, and they were the ones that would do all the reading, and writing from the Bible. One of the main reasons for illiteracy was the lack of technology. The only way for copies of books to be made was with handwritten books, which made it hard to get hands on a book, because the quantity was so scarce. The word Renaissance means "rebirth" or "reawakening". It was a time in which most people would call it an explosion of the arts and cultures. Numerous amounts of distinctive arts, intellectual achievements, and scientific advances were made at the time. This was an age of new discoveries of art, philosophy, architecture, and of the new world. The Renaissance is important because it teaches us the power of looking to the past for insights and inspiration, shows us the importance, as well as shaping our cultural outlook and various expressions of art such as music, writing, and painting. A big contributor to the Renaissance was Leonardo DA Vinci. He is". very well known for his artwork of the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Da Vinci was an artist, sculptor, architect, inventor, military engineer, and draftsman. Some people know him as the "Renaissance Man". He excelled in so many areas, that some would say he was a universal genius! The death of Da Vinci was a great tragedy. He had died in the arms of King Francis. The Middle Ages were not known for their choice in government, ways of living, or their views on the Church. Rather, they were known for making the best of what was given to the, which was music. During the early Middle Ages, peasants stayed bound to the land they were given, but had to depend on landlords for protection. Also, many social bonds were ties of kinship, which lead to the emergence of feudalism among the warrior aristocracy ("The Middle Ages: Feudal Life", 2013).

The Renaissance was a time of remembrance. In Science specifically, it was the order of the universe that was brought up again and argued over. During the Renaissance, ideas from the past flourished. Discussions and disagreements involving topics other than the Universe from ancient times were encouraged greatly. The Roman Catholic Church, the power house of the decade had some dark secrets that were close to being revealed by those in the science field. The church was set on supporting old discoveries and theories, and they were not planning on changing their beliefs about the universe. Because of The Catholic Church’s hunger for power and absolute control of the people, astronomers had a difficult time showing the world what was right from wrong.

In my last writing journal, I talked about why people like Donald Trump are so popular. Since then I read a CNN article in which they interviewed people at Trump rallies and asked them why they supported the man. My takeaway was that these people are afraid of change. This is actually pretty obvious if you think about the last word in Trump’s campaign slogan. Trump wants to make America great again. The “again” implies that we’ve lost something, that we’re not as good as we used to be. Obviously a lot of people won’t agree with my belief that change, as a whole, is almost always a good thing. I believe that if we are creating change then life will get better. Change doesn’t always lead to improvements in everyone’s lives, but, collectively,

The Renaissance Era took place for a time period that lasted for approximately 150 years and during that time significant changes took place. These changes were with the Arts, Literature, Fashion, and ideals. “The entire age can be subdivided into three phases: from 1350 to 1400 during which discovery of ancient texts and experimentation with new art forms took place; 1400 to 1500 typified by political stability in the Italian city-states and the creation of recognizable cultural; and 1500 to 1550 dominated by foreign invasion and the diffusion of the Italian Renaissance to the rest of western Europe” (“Renaissance Society”). The birth of the Renaissance took place in Italy after the most destructive plagues that caused enormous loss of life and this was the Black Plague (Life in Italy). The plague was a tragic time which killed so many people and was difficult to survive. “Despite the plague, the quality of life for surviving citizens of the Renaissance may have improved” (“Renaissance Society”).

“Renaissance”, which is French for “rebirth”, perfectly describes the rebirth of art and learning that occurred in Europe between the 1400s and 1600s. During the era known as the Renaissance, Europe underwent a cultural movement in which people regained interest in the ancient cultures of Greece and Rome. A renewed interest in philosophy and human individuality lead to the development of more worldly and nonreligious focuses. Europe sought knowledge from the ancient world and moved out of the Dark Ages. There was an explosion in art, literature, and architecture. New techniques and styles developed and older, forgotten techniques and styles were revived as these artforms moved away from the colder and darker styles of the Middle Ages.The Renaissance represents Europe moving away from a period of darkness and the rise of trade and exploration; however, the Renaissance would not have occurred if it weren’t for the Late Middle Ages. The events that occurred during the Late Middle Ages lead to changes that ultimately caused the emergence of the Renaissance in Europe.

The renaissance era came by its name quite easily as it literally means rebirth. This era was a transitional period from the intellectually dark middle ages and ushered in a new wave of thinking and explorations. During Da Vinci 's life, the world experienced the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453 and Christopher Columbus 's voyage to the new world in 1492. England experienced its own civil war in 1455, Cairo fell to the Ottomans in 1517 and Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the church doors at Wittenberg effectively changing the religious practices of northern Europe. The dawn of an enlightened modern age was upon us. Da Vinci was a proverbial Renaissance Man. His skills and talents extended far beyond that of an artist. More than a painter and sculptor, he was a writer, mathematician, and inventor. He was such a forward thinker that he envisioned revolutionary ideas such as a flying machine more than 400 years before the Wright Brothers ' famous flight at Kitty Hawk. His art is perhaps some of the most well known and beloved work in the world.

With the dark ages coming to end and the economy of Europe slowly beginning to rise again, a giant scale cultural revolution like never before was slowly beginning to sweep over Europe. Becoming what we now know as the European Renaissance, every aspect of European life changed because of this revolution. The Renaissance began a renewed interest in the people to seek knowledge and question what the world around them meant. The Renaissance wasn’t just about learning however, it included exploring the world, art, and focusing on what the human being had to offer in society. This focus on the human being on an individual level became what is commonly known as Humanism. Humanism can be seen as the central essence of the Renaissance because it questioned everything society, be it religion or the government, had to offer. The Renaissance can actually be divided into two different sections in Europe, the Italian and latter Northern parts. The Northern Renaissance includes all the countries in Western Europe directly not tied to Italy. Beginning in Italian city states, the central ideas of the Renaissance had a rippling effect throughout Europe. The European Renaissance was a giant shift in cultural and technological paradigms that paved the way for Europe to leave the middle ages and enter the Modern Age.

The Renaissance period, also known as the time of “rebirth”, brought many new ideas from the early 14th to late 16th century. These ideas derived from old medieval beliefs coinciding with new modernist attitudes (“Basic Ideas of the Renaissance,” 2012). Of the many changes that occurred, politics and power, humanism, and the Protestant Reformation predominated. Many desired a strong central government and an end to feudalism, which gave way for the establishment of monarchies (“Introduction to Renaissance,” n.d.). The humanist movement gave individuals a different perspective in regards to life satisfaction and limits of reason (Nauret, 1995). With that being said, to recognize man fully, an emphasis was placed on art, activities, and education of the Classical World (“Basic Ideas of the Renaissance,” 2012). With the establishment of monarchies and humanism, the Renaissance period brought to light the issues of the Church and Catholicism. The movement that appeared from this conflict is known as the Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther, a major supporter of the Protestant Reformation, brought forth a different way of thinking and perspective that reflected traditional Christian ideas (Fiero, 2011). Much of the arts in the Renaissance period emulated the ideals and struggles of this time. The Renaissance was a period in European history, from the 14th century to the 17th century, regarding as the cultural bridge between the middle ages and modern ages. The Renaissance began first in the italian states. These city-states had wealth from commerce and trade that was present in the middle ages. Venice was known for its transportation in the silk road and the spice trade. Many merchants from India and China came in helping to bring along new ideas. The style of painting, sculpture and decorative arts identified with the Renaissance emerged in Italy in the late 15th century; it reached its Zenith in the late 15th and early 26th centuries, in the work of italian masters.
