The Roaring Girl at first gives off an impression of being a run of the mill early advanced play around a couple attempting to wind up marry without being excluded. At a more critical look however, we see that The Roaring Girl really concentrates the majority of its activity around the character of Moll Cutpurse. Moll's refusal to absorb into English society makes her an extremely extraordinary heroine. The characters in these three literary text, The Getting of Wisdom, Coonardoo and Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, all demonstrate the traditions of gender roles in the early twentieth century. The first text by Henry Richardson, The Getting of Wisdom in 1910, a Bildungsroman story of a protagonist, Laura, as she develops to gain wisdom through her boarding school life. Richardson’s work undercovers what it is to be a “proper” woman in the early twentieth century through Laura. The traditions of women sexualities in the early 1900s were set quite strictly as genders were set to play a certain role in order to become a ‘fully-grown’ adult. The Getting of Wisdom describes the progression or the failure of Laura to become a “proper” woman throughout the narrative. The next literary text, Coonardoo, is a literary novel written by Katharine Susannah Prichard in the 1920s about the romantic life between an Aboriginal woman and a white man. Although her work struck many issues about interracial relationships as Corbould mentioned that Coonardoo uses ‘bold and unconventional elements’ in the narrative, (415) it reveals many sexual identity of the Aboriginals and the Australian whites, through the narrative voice of a minority. Summer of the Seventeenth Doll by Ray Lawler is an Australian play and was originally set in the mid twentieth century. The play ?Trifles?, by Susan Glaspell , is an examination of the different levels of early 1900?s mid-western farming society?s attitudes towards women and equality. The obvious theme in this story is men discounting women?s intelligence and their ability to play a man?s role, as detectives, in the story. A less apparent theme is the empathy the women in the plot find for each other. Looking at the play from this perspective we see a distinct set of characters, a plot, and a final act of sacrifice.
Middleton and Dekker collaborate to write The Roaring Girl, which concentrates on a real-life London woman named Moll Cutpurse. Moll was reputed to be a prostitute, bawd, and thief, but the playwrights present her as a lady of great spirit and virtue whose reputation is misrepresented by a small, convention-bound civilization. In the play, as in reality, Moll dresses in men’s attire, smokes a pipe and bears a sword representing a colorful and in the underworld life of Moll Cutpurse. She stood London on its head with her cross-dressing and gender-bending behavior, and illegal pursuits. Her defiance of women in this play is exceptional. Also, she is perhaps one of the only players to be scrupulously true to herself; some of the other characters display very hypocritical aspects. Such unorthodox and unconventional role, Middleton and Dekker implies, leads to her spotted standing. She is a roaring girl; An audacious and bold woman-about-town. But beneath this absence of femininity, is a courageous, high-principled woman. Moll interposes in the central plots and is associated in skirmishes with many of the characters, consistently showcasing her ability to stand up for the downtrodden and wronged. Therefore, Moll creates a 'third space ' that identifies her as importantly freed in her navigation of space and social relations.
Throughout history great writers have brought women’s struggle under male dominance to light. Shakespeare’s Othello and Glaspell’s Trifles bring great female characters to the stage that share similarities. Both Glaspell and Shakespeare follow the same theme, while using both foreshadowing and irony to illustrate that Desdemona, Emilia, Bianca, Mrs. Wright, Mrs. Peters, and Mrs. Hale live under similar oppressive conditions.
At the same time, the readings of the women's masculinity and androgyny must be similarly reconsidered. While Irving reads Lena as one who "conforms more readily than Ántonia" and assimilates in a manner "too complete" in that "she, like Jim, is lethargic" (100), I would argue that Lena's refusal to marry and her achievement of the independent, successful life she sought belie any ready categorization of reinforced hegemony, undermining standard patriarchal demands; and her success can be contrasted with Jim's loveless marriage and the vague reference to the "disappointments" that have failed to quell his "naturally romantic and ardent disposition" (4). Similarly, as Gilbert and Gubar highlight, the happiness of the "masculine" hired girls stands in stark contrast with the emotional restriction to which town wives are subjected: "Energetic and jolly, Mrs. Harling must stop all the activities of her household so as to devote herself entirely to her husband" (197). These scenes, consisting of communication between the female characters, assist in developing the theme of women openly defying the fact that the society they live in is primarily run by men. All the power and authority in their society, no matter the situation, belongs to the men while the women are simply excluded. The women in these plays defy the norms set by society and manage to evade the expectations of their patriarchal societies.
In the early 1900´s women did not have the same rights as men and are not respected as much as men either. Women did not get their voting rights till 1920, four years after the play Trifles by Susan Glaspell. The first essay, “The Roles of Women in British Drama,” represents my first exposure to a new genre of literature. The essay was also one of my first formal and interpretative essays at the college level. As a woman and a student of literature, I feel a special connection to this essay’s topic of women’s roles in literature. In addition, this essay shows my “knowledge of the social, political, philosophical, and religious forces that influence authors and the people they write about” (Oral/Portfolio). After reading some of the most prominent British plays of the twentieth century, I observed a discontinuity in the roles of women in this genre. Sadly, women’s roles in literature were very similar to their role in society. During the twentieth century, women were still trying and failing to emerge out of the roles they had been cast in by a male dominated society. Even though women were almost always portrayed as inferior to men, I found a strong exception to this stereotype through the role of Thomasina. I admire Thomasina’s intelligence and wit, but I truly admire Tom Stoppard for creating this character.

Elizabeth’s younger self is developed in the context of 1960’s London. The 1960s was considered a decade of change for women ; birth control pills being approved for the first time and women entering the work force and protesting gender disparities in pay . Elizabeth is depicted by Bovell as a fiercely intelligent woman, still in the prime of her life when we first meet her in her “small flat in London.” Living in the 60s, she would have been full of expectation and hope for the future, grasping at any opportunity, making it all the more tragic when it is all torn away from her and she is left alone with a life she never wanted: the life of a single mother. It is her story that is the origin of the problems faced by all other characters in the play, setting up Bovell’s themes of intergenerational trauma and failure. It was within this context that I first started a more holistic interpretation of her character. Furthermore, the contemporary nature of our performance of When The Rain Stops Falling has allowed me to explore her character in greater depth, as the non-linear, multi-generational nature of the play has given me an insight into Elizabeth’s future life, providing more weight and meaning to the circumstances in her earlier appearances, and how

She intricately portrays the female characters in her story as intelligent, but passive due to the fact that males dismiss their ideas and conversations as unimportant. “Girl” is a short story in which the author, Jamaica Kincaid, unofficially presents the stereotypes of girls in the mid 1900s. Kincaid includes two major characters in the story “Girl”, they are the mother and the girl. Although the daughter only asks two questions in this story, she is the major character. The mother feels like her daughter is going in the wrong direction and not making the best decisions in her life. The whole story is basically the mother telling her daughter what affects her decisions will have in the future. The mother believes that because her daughter isn’t sitting, talking, cleaning, walking or singing correctly it will lead her to a path of destruction. “Girl” is a reflection of female sexuality, the power of family, and how family can help overcome future dangers.
