The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has one of the highest child mortality rates in the world. Even though the number of children suffering from global acute malnutrition has decreased from 16% in 2001 to 11% in 2010, the rates remain exceptionally high. In 2012, 63.6% of the population live in extreme poverty, living on less than a dollar each day. Infant mortality in the DRC is 73.15/1,000. Among these deaths, half of them are as a result of malnutrition.
As shown above, a large majority of the population do not have enough money and cannot afford to buy food to feed their families. Therefore, these people have to survive on very little or no food for up to several days each time. Children take the greatest impact because they need adequate
The effects that malnutrition has on the Democratic Republic of Congo are fairly severe. Not only is malnutrition affecting the countrywide health, but it also heavily impacts the economy. Because citizens are undernourished, they are at a higher risk of infections and diseases. This is due to a lack of a balanced diet which
The United States is known as the wealthiest country in the world. But, there are many people that can't afford to buy food for their families, many are also homeless. “While hunger affects people of all ages, it's particularly devastating for children even short-term episodes of hunger can cause lasting damage."(“Child Nutrition Programs") Child hunger in the United States is caused by poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, and food shortage; however there are many solutions to this problem like FRAC strategies, food banks, summer feeding programs, and backpack feeding programs.
It was difficult to read that countless millions of federal dollars and many of our country's most successful efforts to halt the spread of childhood hunger and starvation have recently been withdrawn. And as a result, this problem of childhood hunger is not getting better but is actually getting worse. The most recent estimates compiled by the USDA in 1999 indicate that 36.2 million Americans live in food-insecure households, which means that their access to adequate and safe food is limited or uncertain. This too is very disturbing information.
Johnny gets home from school and makes his way straight to the kitchen. He is hungry and wants a quick, yummy snack, but when he opens up the fridge, there is nothing there. Now he has to wait until his mom brings home dinner at six o'clock. Can you imagine what it would be like to experience this every day? Unbelievable, right? Well, for many children and families, this is their reality. What could possibly cause this, what are the effects, and what are people doing to help these poor families? A large number of children do not have access to fresh and nutritious food, due to lack of supermarkets or living on food stamps. This lack of healthy food can affect childhood development immensely and can lead to obesity and other diseases. Many people are doing what they can to help, like opening community gardens, connecting farms, restaurants, and hotels with food banks, and organizing food drives.
Imagine your stomach growling, a feeling of emptiness, fatigue, and an inability to concentrate. Most people would associate these feelings with hunger and eat. Unfortunately, many Americans do not have the luxury of eating because of living in poverty. According to the Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the number of people living in poverty rose from 31.6 million in 2000 to 36.5 million in 2006. The number of people living in households facing food insecurity rose from 31 million in 1999 to 35.5 million in 2006. More than 12 million of the people living in food insecure households were children (Labue, 2009). Food America (2017) reports:
According to Feeding America, statistics show that 43.1 million people in the United States in 2015 are in poverty, including 14.5 million children. When we think of that number of people in poverty we know that living in poverty directly relates to food insecurity. A slightly higher number of people are food
Mother of five, Cynthia, has a steady job at a nursing home as well as a supportive husband yet struggles to feed her family on a daily basis. Like many other Americans she does not qualify for government assistance because she makes too much; in her case thirty eight dollars too much. In cases like Cynthia’s, options seem incredibly limited and there is often no assistance for feeding her family (abcnews). Over 12 million children under the age of eighteen in the United States are food insecure. Meaning they are unable to consistently access adequate amounts of nutritious food necessary for a healthy life. More than three million children under the age of five are food insecure (Insecurity2012).
Food is essentials to survive, recent reports shows many people die around the world because lack of food. For example, there were financial crisis in U.S from 2008 to 2011, during this period many U.s citizens became homeless. Many instance recorded such that, people died because of no food, social welfare societies determined that and offered food to such people, Few people contradict with this and suggest that offer temporary stay and food is not only the solution.
Most people are fortunate enough to have three, healthful meals every day. Although, this is not typical for everyone in America. 1 in 6 people in America battle hunger every day. A majority of these people have children to care for. Children who struggle with hunger are more likely to have academic or behavioral problems. Typically, parents with children often encounter some form of unemployment at some point. Sadly, because of these exasperating issues up to 5,000 people starve to death each year.
Hunger has stalked Venezuela for years. But now, it is killing children at an alarming rate. Hospitals are overflowing with malnourished children. Before the Venezuelan economy collapsed, most malnourished children were in hospitals because of abuse from parents. But as the crisis started to intensify, the children in hospitals were there because of starvation. In 2011, there were severe floods in Colombia causing many people to lose their home and food. Colombia has tried to make floating houses Incase of another flood, but they never finished the project. This is one of the many factors of how malnutrition started in Colombia.
Almost 80% of humanity lives on less than 10 dollars a day. The vast bulk occurs in underdeveloped countries and approximately 795 million people are gaunt, or roughly 1 in every nine people. Throughout an average day over 21000 people have passed away from hunger. The predominant undernourished region would be Asia with the top three countries being India, China, and Pakistan, could directly affect a major part of the world with the loss of production, with China, which is at 4th highest In the world. And also, and dominantly, the erroneous effect of the Inhumane act of neglecting the deaths and torture of extremely innocent people, while the population could eradicate this simply.
Poor nutrition is responsible for the death of nearly 3.1 million children annually; this is half of all deaths in children under the age of five ("Quick Facts"). About 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to live a healthy, active lifestyle ("Hunger Statistics"). Seventy-five percent of the world 's poorest people - 1.4 billion women, children, and men - live in rural areas and depend on agriculture and related activities for their livelihoods ("Know Your World").
Since World War II, Sub-Saharan Africa has seen notable improvements in child survival; however, childhood mortality conditions continue to lag behind. Ghana is said to be “an island of peace and stability” in the volatile landscape of Sub-Saharan West Africa; a success story of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (Atakpu, 2004). Its success has put Ghana as the leader in human development among the countries in that region. Although, the infant mortality rate and mortality rate of children under the age of five is still rather high compared to the rest of the world. This problem has ranked the country as 135th out of 177countries studied for human development by 2007-2008 United Nations Human Development Report. Since child
Food is one of the basic needs of a human being to survive. All of us depend on food for having a good health, therefore with the lack of food many people will be starving and malnourished.
The 2015 Statistical Analysis Poverty Level Data report shows in the United States, there was an increase in which families’ are able to provide food per person within their household.
