The Roles that parents, siblings and peers play in children’s development
The roles of parents, siblings and peers on children’s development could be understood and evaluated. Gelb, C., & Leibowitz (2010). The situations and encounters a child faces have a huge impact on children’s development. The actions and behaviour of parents, sibling and peers are seen as very significant for when a child is developing, as the child is at different stages where they are exposed to new environments in which they learn from and apply these learnings. Throughout this essay I will be putting forward my research and findings to explain as to what extent a child is affected by these significant figures and how much the child is affected. Many phycologists and people who have studied children’s development state that the roles of these figures are generally underestimated. The simple things that these figures do are overlooked, for example parents’ tones of voice when speaking to a child, the way a sibling approaches the child and how peers approach the child are all factors in which a child’s development can shape. This essay will portray my critical evaluation of the roles for the three main influencers in children’s development, including cognitive/academic, social, and emotional development.

Moreover, family environment will also influence children behaviour stealthly. Parents play an important role in children's growth process. Parents are model of children. Parents with good manner and habits may influence the children. Children may follow what their parents behave and develop it. For example, parents use to wash hand before eat, children will follow what they do. In contrast, parents used to talk in a impolite way, their children will also follow their impolite way to talk.
While children are influenced by many things, there are no stronger influences than that of their parents. Parents are usually their children’s first playmates, and while there world expands with each passing year, parental influence is still one of the greatest factors in determining the ways in which the child will grow and develop.
Socially and Emotionally the family is a big influence in a child’s development. Parents have a big role by providing care and guidance for their development. Unfortunately some families cannot promote the development of a child because of the conflict among the parents. A single parent can have difficulties in boosting a better development in children and young people, sometimes a child is separated from its siblings and this can affect them too.
The methods or style of parenting, teaching and engagements strong impacts on the child development as it is the primary socialization point for children. It gives children a point of reference as when they are young they grow observing and learning keenly on what their parents are doing. Studies show that, children that are raised by active, involving and playful fathers performs better in school, have higher IQ and can cope with school related stress easily compared to those that are raised in families where father figure is absent or less involving. Over the course of an individual’s life span, one is seen forming relationships with several people in whom they find their presence an important aspect to their life. However, among these relationships, parent-child relationships are the most valuable, but also very complex. These relationships are built from a foundation of interaction starting from the birth of the child to their adulthood. Unfortunately, if this involvement is not present within a child’s life, it can ultimately cause them to feel neglected causing outrageous conflicts, behavior issues and emotional disputes. Years ago, children used to spend most of their time with their parents. They worked with their families on the farm, in a shop, or learning their father’s trade. Girls worked alongside their mothers, helping with household chores, doing laundry, helping with younger siblings and cooking and baking. Most children were also schooled in their own homes and so children saw their parents all day long. It was easy for a parent to be a part of their children’s life and have influence over them. Now, children enter day care or early pre-school and are in school all day long. The parents that the child is surrounded by everyday also determines what a child’s character would be. “So it is with parents and children: one person’s behavior toward one another has consequences for the quality of the relationship between them. Over the course of a lifetime the balance of power shifts, and children, complete with memories of how they were treated, have a growing say in their dealing with their parents... Caregivers play a primary role in how a child may develop. The daily interaction between the caregiver and child continually changes the pathway in which the child may take. How the child is raised and the parenting style used is a significant influence on that development by affecting the relationship between parent and child. In this paper, I will examine how parenting style affects an individuals relationship with his or her children. According to Baumrind, there are four main parenting styles, differentiated on levels of support and expectations. This paper focuses on parents with high support and high expectations,who are known as authoritative parents and those who are supportive with low expectations, who are are permissive. These four different styles of parenting lead to very different developmental outcomes for children in social, academic and emotional domains. However, this model does not fully explain parent-child interactions because it neglects to reference the environmental context of the relationship along with any personal differences in temperament of the child. This context introduces complexity such as personality differences, age of child and marital status of the parents. This is an important topic to investigate because of the impact parenting style can have on developmental outcomes for both the immediate child and for future generations.
