The Romance of Risk: Why Teenagers Do The Things They Do The book, “The Romance of Risk: Why Teenagers Do The Things They Do,” by Lynn E. Ponton talks about different adolescent going through tough times in their lives. Doctor Ponton is the main character who tries to help each individual overcome their obstacles or realize that the way they are acting is affecting them and their parents. The book consist of 15 stories of different adolescents acting out which lead to their decisions. Each chapter focuses on an individual’s case. It explains the patient, the reasons she is working with he or she, and their background that might have led to their decisions. The only thing in common between all the adolescents was that they were all engaging in risky behaviors. Dr. Lynn Ponton gave them advice on how to take healthy risk instead of unhealthy risk that might change their lives forever. Not only did she give advice to the teens but also to the parent(s) on how to deal with their kid’s actions and communicating with them as well. The book is also broken down into sections that explain the different situations that can cause a child to act out or what is influencing them. Section one is more about the teenagers making their own decisions but leads them to unhealthy life styles. Their decisions can sometimes lead into more serious outcomes like STDs, pregnancy, illnesses, etc. These outcome also depend on the risk taking these teenagers engage in. `In conclusion, If you know William Shakespeare you know the play “ The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet”, a tragic story that proves that love makes teens do crazy things. I have found evidence that teens make lots of risky discussions. Also this concludes some of the beliefs that people have on why teens take so many
In order to illustrate a key stage in the life course, I will be looking at the area of adolescence because I believe that this is one of the most critical life stages, with so many immense transitions young people go through. I have chosen to focus on adolescence because of a commitment to working with these vulnerable individuals aged from 14 to 19. We can no doubt all reflect on wrong choices we felt we made in our adolescence, and how our education and employment prospects may have benefited from good advice at this crucial juncture in life. I want to be able to guide vulnerable adolescents in the right direction and help them make the right choices, by understanding their needs, and supporting them in practical ways to live fulfilling and independent lives. From personal experience, I sincerely believe that with the right kind of guidance and attention, troubled teenagers can get back on track.
The control adolescents express over the choices they make, like the rise and fall of the tide, is fluid and dependant on multiple factors. These factors--biography, biology and current situation--are essential to the adolescent decision-making process as they manage to influence, but not control, the choices we make.
By the end of the story all three teenagers are smacked in the face with reality and have come to the conclusion they are not these dangerous characters and that life is more than partying and acting like a fool. We can all recall that time in our lives when we finally noticed that we still need our parent’s guidance and that were not really adults in the mental capacity yet.
Adolescents make more rash decisions than any other age group. This behavior linked with teenagers leads to risky actions because of the design of the teenage brain. On the flip side, the blueprint of the teenage brain permits teens to pick up new skills by seeking out different adventures. The teenage characters in Romeo and Juliet pose as an accurate representation of typical teenage decision making. Although this is consistent behavior with this age group, based upon scientific findings of adolescent brain growth, brain maturity, and pleasure drive, teenagers like Romeo and Juliet should be held responsible for their risk-taking and impulsive behavior.
The thrill seeking, hormonal teen can be used to describe an adolescent that parents deem out of control or unstable. However, many teens deal with varying circumstances that lead to their risky
Adolescence is a time of stressful transition for teenagers. They are straddling the fence between childhood and adulthood. Changes in their bodies, brains, thinking, values, friends, responsibilities and expectations cause events that are usually a time fraught with turbulence, for both the teen and their parents. This is a normal part of human development, and must be endured in order to come out the other side, hopefully well-adjusted, happy, healthy, and
understanding of the faults of teens and how they are raised need to be understood before proper
This essay is going to enhance edgework, and show how it impacts on our youth’s lifestyle in today’s society. It is looked down upon “as a negative concept, something dangerous or hazardous which must be voided” (Lupton, 2012.) Whereas the concept of edgework can be turned around and seen as a pleasure for their lifestyle on a day to day basis, for instance “one important aspect of risk taking however, is the pleasure and emotional intensities some people may experience when voluntarily taking risks.” (Lupton, 2012.) Throughout this piece there will be different acknowledgements towards different types of edgework such as; Drug taking, binge drinking and taking your own life. These risk taking actions are all different and reflect and affect youths in different ways within their lifestyles. Additionally there are many boundary’s that youths take to an extent to get the right feeling
“Sometimes it's a good idea to think about what you want from a situation, and try to get it, rather than just blurt out the first thing that comes into your head.” (Lockhart). This situation happens to people much too often, especially to teens. Although many teenagers are considered adults, Shakespeare’s Romeo And Juliet and contemporary societal examples demonstrate that, instead, teenagers too often make impulsive decisions without always thinking about the consequences that follow up. But why do teens make these impulsive decisions than any other age group?
In society, there are incipient changes teen’s will go through as they get older. Many of these changes can be like the teens personality or their outlook on life. Changes like these are due to the stages of maturity teens will endure as they progress through the years. The teen’s environment can also alter the comportment and attitude portrayed by them; however, despite the fact of the environment the teen’s exposed to, they will nonetheless have a kind heart deep down in them. Though teen’s can have vagaries making them a delinquent, depressed, or a hypocrite because of their surroundings, they’re always going to have love for their loved ones.
This relates to when people get invited to a High School party and there is no adult supervision things happen that a person may have never imagined doing in their life time. The most quietest and innocent person from the party gets wild like no one has seen before because they get that side out of them that does not let them realize that they are doing bad choices. This books hidden message is that everyone has that inner goodness and
The book also tells life about being in the lower class of society and the problems people face in everyday life. Their problems rang from drug abuse to violence and depression. Ponyboy has problems with cigarettes, Johnny has depression, and there is violence all around.
Throughout the film, the issues of family life, ideal role models, and child development significantly reflect toward today’s society. Today, this society finds it difficult to raise a child for two parents. For example, they experience financial problems, relationship issues amongst themselves, or potentially going through a divorce all play a critical role in the child development process. A parent's initial hope is for their child to succeed in school and also to succeed in the outside world when looking for jobs that suit their interest, yet, teenagers have the highest tendency to commit a crime. By following the friends they chose to have, they become more influenced to encounter themselves into trouble, however, this is not the only factor. During life at
kids doing wrong and making bad decisions. During the years of teenage life the brain is more active and dynamic than we first thought and our brains are forced to use the limbic system, because the brain is using the limbic system with no help from the pre-frontal cortex, teens tend to make risky actions and parents can find this time very frustrating, exhausting, and sometimes scary. It is important that a parent is able to understand a teen and give appropriate discipline, that way a teenager has the right help getting ready for adulthood, even with the thrills, chills and even the spills of their roller coaster years.
