Religious institutions have played a prominent role in the history of American culture, and legislation. These institutions were especially impactful during the start of American colonization. Colonization caused the aggregated need for mass amounts of workers for cultivation infrastructure. For this reason, American settlers began the transatlantic slave trade trade. Christianity played an important role in advocating for the morality of the slave trade (Richard). In order to drive the slave industry, pastors across America used the traditions and stories found in the Bible to endorse and even encourage the practice of slavery. One of the most heartbreaking quotes from Adeline Cunningham represents the severely oppressive relationship between the slave owner and the slave. She states “…we never goes to church. Times we sneaks in de woods and prays de Lawd to make us free and times one of de slaves got happy and made a noise dat dey heered at de big house and den de overseer come and whip us ’cause we prayed de Lawd to set us free” (Federal Writers Project). Adeline’s experience was not a unique story. There are countless narratives of slave owners who were afraid of their slaves becoming intellectually liberated. Slave owners feared the day that their slaves acted upon their intelligence and will for freedom. A quote from Leah Garret characterizes a contrasting relationship between slaves and Christianity. She states that, “De slaves went to church wid dey marsters. De preachers always preached to de white folks first, den dey would preach to de slaves. Dey never said nothin’ but you must be good, don’t steal, don’t talk back at your marsters, don’t run away, don’t do dis, and don’t do dat. Dey let de colored preachers preach but dey give ’em almanacs to preach out of. Dey didn’t ’low us to sing such songs as “We Shall Be Free” and “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing.” Hey always had somebody to follow de slaves to church when de colored preacher was preachin’ to hear what wuz said and done. For over 2,000 years, slavery has been conducted in various parts of the world. From year 1500 to year 1900, Europeans stole individuals from West Africa, West Central Africa, and Southeast Africa and shipped them to the different parts of the Atlantic. This process dehumanized them of their identity. Europeans stole husbands, wives, merchants, blacksmiths, farmers, and even children. They removed them from their homelands and gave them new names: slaves. European slaveholders never thought to take ownership of their actions by killing humans with brutality and degradation. The South, on the other hand, was highly dependent upon the institution of slavery. It was still primarily an agricultural society that needed as many laborers as possible in order for the plantation owners to make ends meet. According to historian Douglas Harper, “In 1793 came the cotton gin, which brought a 50-fold increase in the average daily output of short-staple cotton, promoted the rapid expansion of a ‘cotton kingdom’ across the Deep South, and made large-scale slavery profitable.” Because of this, the slave became an essential tool to the farmers of the south; more money became invested in slavery rather than in industrial improvements. Based upon the 1860 U.S. Census, there were almost a whopping total of four million slaves in the South alone. In fact, the more slaves an owner had, the more prestige. “Most slave owners owned fewer than five slaves, and only 12 percent of Southerners had twenty or more slaves. Many whites who had no slaves looked with envy upon the wealthy, and to a degree admired them.” This hierarchy had a clearly defined social structure which created distinctions between rich and poor whites as well as racial segregation. This agricultural society and its strict hierarchy only increased the social and racial disparities found in the southern region of the United States.
Along with the division between rural and urban plantation missions, in the 1830s and 1840s, concern arose among Southern churchmen after acknowledging that multitudes of districts in the Southwest had churches that could not contain even “one-tenth of the Negro populations; besides others in which there are no churches at all”. The fact that nearly all Southwestern slave states lacked Christian institutions before plantation missions meant that religion played little to no role in the lives of the majority of slaves residing within these boundaries. Even after missionaries brought the gospel to both rural and urban slaves at home, the prevalence of plantations missions varied from state to state. To start with, white southern slave owners used religion to justify slavery (Arguments and Justifications). Slave owners believed that God wanted slavery to happen and in turn, they would convert to Christianity. Many a times, this would make the owners more tyrannical. Slave owners used Christianity as an excuse for the awful ways they treated their slaves. Christianity played a major role on the increase of brutality and violence that spirited the slave owners. The scriptures in the Bible were twisted in the eyes of slave owners to how they wanted to interpret them. Douglass had a powerful experience with one of his masters, Thomas Auld. Mr. Auld was not a religious person and treated the slaves very poorly. In August 1832, Auld attended a Methodist camp meeting and that marked the day when he became religious, and suddenly even more cruel. “Prior to his conversion, he relied upon his own depravity to shield and sustain him in his savage barbarity; but after his conversion, he found religious sanction and support for his slaveholding cruelty.” After becoming religious, Auld uses scripture to justify his cruelty. Douglass thought that with discovering religion and using it, Auld would become more polite as how Douglass viewed Christianity. Unfortunately that was not the case. Auld justifies that being affiliated with religion would not change a person for the better. To be under a non-Christian slave owner had some consequences but also had limited freedom that did not come from Christian Slave owners. (Douglass 1845/1995) states that treatment under the non-Christian slave owner was heavenly compared to being under the Christian slave owner (p.47). The non-Christian owners had nothing to back up their beatings. They would still beat the slaves, but at least they would have enough to eat, limited supply of clothing, and a place to sleep. Not necessarily the best, but they would have enough to survive and still work hard. Douglass was reminded of his blessings that he encountered at the time but did not know it when it was happening. Long before their contact with whites, Africans were a strongly religious, and deeply spiritual people. During the early history of slavery, the African American spirituality was often seen by whites as a pagan faith. These rituals and dogmas were seen by whites as Voodoo, Hoodoo, Witchcraft, and superstitions. They often commented on these "pagan practices," and fetishes, and were threatened by them. In “Incidents in the life of a slave girl’’ Harriet Jacobs talks about the life of a slave in church and how it amuses the slaves and make them feel somewhat free. She also brings up that the the slave owners uses religion as an advantage to control the slaves more.
