The Social Problem Of Bullying

Bullying is seen and unseen, noticed by others and unnoticed, it’s a problem not just in our little communities, towns, cities or states but all over our country, bullying is a worldwide problem. As the internet has roared up so has forms of bullying throughout the web. Cyber bullying has become a problem that has never been thought of before. Although it is less physical than traditional forms of bullying, it can have more devastating and longer-lasting effects. It is rapidly becoming a major problem. Now, a small physically weak child can be as much of a bully as the big brute but with more impact. Educators definitely need to understand how powerful and dangerous this new type of bullying has become as it has greatly impacted the classroom.

In 2014, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) did a study on bullying and the found that 19.4% of all the students interviewed had been bullied at school. This may not seem very surprising, bullying has been going on for decades. Generations of men and women have come to fear the people who walk the halls, stealing lunch money from those weaker than them. However, it is interesting to note that 14.8% of that 19.4% had reported being cyber bullied. Unlike the standard physical bullying, cyberbullying is a slightly more recent development, but it has evolved to become much more deadly. It gives bullies a better tool for creating more widespread pain. The awareness for cyber bullying needs to increase and ultimately, cyberbullying needs to be abolished completely due to its destructive capabilities.

People have different views and definitions of bullying. “Schools need to better define bullying, so schools can define it and react to it” (Weddle). All schools, around the world, have different rules and punishments for the students. No matter what type of bullying, it should not happen to anyone. No one deserves to have fears about going to go to or to work because they are afraid of being threatened and bullied. Bullying is a well known problem in the US yet little had been done to prevent the problem. Bullying is a wide spread epidemic in our country. Almost everyone will be bullied at some point in their life. Bullying happens for many reasons and can have fatal consequences if it is not handled.

Many people have had to deal with or known of a bully. Bullying is a term that I believe many people are aware of and could spot, but may not be able to define without consideration. My definition of bullying is based on preconceived notions that are derived from experience and outside sources, in particular media sources. Being the product of the public school system I was exposed to bullying whether from firsthand experience, rumors in school or participating in an act of bullying. These accounts occurred more than thirteen years ago and I have since only heard of bullying from occasional news reports. To me bullying is a pattern of aggressive action with mal intent intending to assert dominance.

It is a practice that is perpetrated by the society through the existing cultures, systems, institutions, traditions, and norms that encourage alienation and stereotyping that are commonly associated with bullying. Today’s kids are this world’s hope for the better future and need a better, healthier environment and where else than at home. Homeschooling is a great option for children to learn. Bullying is a really sketchy topic that isn’t acknowledged as much as it should be in today’s society.

Bullying and aggressive behavior in the school system are no secret. Many people have encountered a bully, or have been a bully at some point in their lives. According to the American Psychological Association (APA) bullying “is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions”. Unfortunately, the internet makes it easier for children to hide behind computers and say what they please to others, it has branched out into something called cyber bullying. According to the APA, cyber bullying includes sending hurtful or threatening e-mails or instant messages, spreading rumors or posting embarrassing photos of others, etc. Children who are bullied, and children who are doing the bullying both have different experiences. Bullying comes in all shapes and sizes and anyone can be targeted, however certain groups are of children and adolescents have a higher chance of being bullied. Bullying can impact childrens’ behavior, self-esteem, education, etc. It can lead to outcomes such as dropping out of school, doing drugs, things as terrible as death by suicide; much of our youth has taken their lives due to these actions.

In this week assignment I am going to describe an issue that I passionate about it. Bully is an issue that destroys a family specialist the kid involve in the situation. Those children can experience negative physical, school, and mental health issues. Kids who are bullied are more likely to experience. Depression and anxiety, increased feelings of sadness and loneliness, changes in sleep and eating patterns, and loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy. These issues may persist into adulthood. Three actions that I would take to address the issue with bullying at school and the challenges I might encounter taking the action to address each and achieve my goals.
