ROLE OF HUMAN RESOURCES SERGEANT IN THE PROFESSION OF ARMS What it means to be a profession is purposely written in the Army Soldier's creed, culture values, ethics, and credibility. In the Role of the Human Resources Sergeant those attributes are used in order to maintain the stability and effectiveness of the Profession of Arms. Those strategic leaders establish and balance the expertise and its potential and future operating environment. The role of those leaders is to also balance the Army's culture in terms of doing the things that need to be accomplished. This also allows them to apply the jurisdictions they learned and to balance the climate and artifacts, what the Soldier's hear, say, and feel about the unit. Also, the strategic leaders must maintain the balance of institutional support through assignment and utilization to motivate aspiring professionals. By using those values and principles, the Human Resources Sergeant must have to pass on the lessons, values, and culture to the new generations of Soldiers to create their identity, develop it into character, and to inspire them to be aspiring professionals that are capable of accomplishing any mission to protect the American people. The leader also needs to reinforce the ethics of the Profession of Arms with the intention of maintaining an effective and virtuous Army for the security of the nation. Other than that, an Army Human Resources Sergeant is someone who is passionate about making the lives of Army families better and comfortable as they respond to extreme transitions such as PCS, separations, and deployments. The Sergeant is capable of ensuring the Soldiers and their families’ transitions go smoother as they go through such separations from their loved ones. Sergeants in Human Resources first priority is to eliminate stress and foster a good quality of life for many Army families, provide them the health and financial benefits they deserve. The culture around the HR Sergeant can very easily change negatively by having a toxic leader in place. HR Sergeants strive to have the best leadership skills and strive to develop their subordinates to be the best leaders they can be. This ensures the culture will not be negatively impacted due the HR Profession. HR Sergeants can be counted on in tough times because they are both self-aware at an intuitional level and personal level. Being aware ensures the unit will be ready for whatever task comes next which shows the strong culture of the Profession of Arms. HR Sergeants have a professional identity unlike any other. Balancing the role of the Professional Leader has been an ongoing issue for the Army since the latter decades of the 19th century when the U.S. Army was professionalized. The Army has struggled with the matter of balancing a force as massive as the Army. When out of balance the Army does not have the capability to send Soldiers where they are needed. During the Second War in Iraq it was obvious that the Army was not upholding this balance, junior leaders in the Army were fighting against a counterinsurgency campaign that they were ill prepared to handle due to a lack of necessary experience and equipment.
Soldiers must be prepared to kill and die when needed in service to the Republic.” (An Army White Paper , 2010) The Human Resource Sergeant play a crucial part in preparing all Soldiers in our Commands for just that. We prepare, counsel, document, and manage Soldiers and their careers. Everything we do as professionals directly affects Soldiers and their loved ones. We pay them, process their awards, promotions, leave requests, and life insurance, among many other important duties. We schedule their Periodic Health Assessment’s and Army Physical Fitness Test’s for not only mental but physical readiness. On top of that, we are responsible for preparing briefings, coordinating training schedules and keeping to very strict deadlines. The Human Resource Sergeant is always adapting and overcoming new obstacles.
The Human Resources Sergeant plays a vital role in the Army Profession of Arms. An Army professional must have various attributes of good character and leadership skills and the “Be, Know, Do” qualities to be called a profession at all. In the civilian world, there are so many opportunities for us just because of our education in HR. When they come across our military background that pushes us to the front due to our affiliation with the Army. Our greatest impact within the Army profession impact is our trust from peers and others around us in our ability to juggle and handle so many sections in our arena and still be able to participate in the basic skills such as physical fitness or qualifying at the marksmanship range. We are the face of professionals due to our discipline to interact and work not only with infantrymen or mechanics on our side of the uniform but also connect and work with the civilians in completing task making a good impression on how Soldiers look while serving in uniform. We play both fields and we are who the civilians come to with their spouse deployed and are having financial issues or when investigators come to get information on a Soldier.
