There was a lot of conflict on the documentary of Spanish Lake. Sadly, it seemed that the conflicts all started between blacks and whites. Then the conflicts were further pushed by greedy bankers and realtors. Slowly they have rebuilt, but it is nowhere near what it once was. At first everyone was happy with how Spanish Lake was doing things. Then people got tired of living inside of cities so they started to move out into rural areas outside the city limits. When white people started to move out and blacks came to live in the homes they left behind. This caused the other white people to leave because they were scared that with the blacks moving in that their property would lose its value over time. This was further antagonized by outside …show more content…
They were told to sell right now and move. The realtors even bought some of the houses for like 25,000 up front but turn around and sell it for 30 or 35,000. The realtors started to buy property that was just land and started to build apartments and other such multi-family housing. They found with those types of building they could make more money. The problem was that they couldn’t get enough people to fill the apartments. They turned to the government to find the answer. They decided to go with section 8 housing to fill the spots. They filled the spots, but with that many people in one small area crime started to sky rocket. People on the documentary mentioned that the robbers got so used to robbing the places that they started to rob people while they were home. It seemed that crime was going to go crazy, but then the people started to fight back. They formed a group to fight these problems. They went to the government and told them they needed to fix the problem that they had started. It was decided to increase police presence in the area. They also incorporated many different things and now crime is way
The Battle of the Chosin Reservoir was a pivotal battle in the Korean War. The battle was a brutal 17 day fight in bitterly cold weather fought from 27 November to 13 December 1950. [1] During the battle the United States X Corps was attacked by the Chinese 9th Army in the vicinity of the Chosin reservoir. The Chinese forces quickly surrounded the US troops and forced them to fight a retrograde attack in order to fight their way out to friendly lines to the south. Due to poor Chinese intelligence on UN forces and logistical shortcomings the UN forces were able to evade total annihilation and were able to retreat to safety with the majority of their men and equipment intact.
As the problem of overcrowding became more and more evident, several remedies were tried. There was some individual philanthropy, model dwellings were built by "philanthropic capitalists," legislation was passed prohibiting overcrowding, slums were torn down(which, of course, only worsened the problem by displacing more people), there was suburban speculative development closely following the development of the railroad which provided cheap, rapid transit to the newly-forming
The film created a connection of the people living in Barrio Logan showing the life before and after to the changes they had to go through. It was just a humble town that had all the resources the needed to feel safe. Before there was a border people would come as they pleased and enjoy their time the beautiful land to visit the community where everyone knew each other. Then the border created the first separation of the land they used to travel across so easily. Which ripped a part of the place they once knew. After time, many people left as the highway was built right on top of where their homes were built.
Years ago, there was once a small town called Chaves Ravine within Los Angeles, California and this town was a poor rural community that was always full of life. Two hundred families, mostly Chicano families, were living here quite peacefully until the Housing Act of 1949 was passed. The Federal Housing Act of 1949 granted money to cities from the federal government to build public housing projects for the low income. Los Angeles was one of the first cities to receive the funds for project. Unfortunately, Chavez Ravine was one of the sites chosen for the housing project, so, to prepare for the construction work of the low-income apartments, the Housing Authority of Los Angeles had to convince the people of the ravine to leave, or forcibly
With this development came many land speculators. It was widely known that with transportation comes a greater demand for the land being developed. Developers built rows of luxury
People tend to overlook the geographical location of Figueroa Boulevard and plainly assume residents of the area were working-class Mexican American without realizing that there are three distinct neighborhoods on this very street. In his work, “Los Angeles Geopolitics and the Zoot Suit Riots, 1943,” Eduardo Obregon Pagan notes the three neighborhoods along Figueroa Boulevard “the farther south in traveled in downtown area, the affluence of the neighborhoods grew in proportion to the whiteness of the residents.”5 This appears to be true since the neighborhood appeared to become more modern as one move down from Figueroa Boulevard. The residents of Chavez Ravine were native to the United States with Mexican origin with some immigrants from Central Europe and Italy. The neighborhood is considered to be old-fashioned since it was
In Waldinger, Roger and Mehdi Bozorgmehr, eds. 1996. Ethnic Los Angeles, they write about population changes due to immigration and how these changes effect the communities in L.A. Similarly, the migration from the south to the north created an ethnic transformation in Harlem and helped Harlem become a vibrant cosmopolitan metropolis. By interacting on a regular basis around shared experiences created strong bonds that formed over
In “Police Reinforcements Arrive to Combat Crime in Mexico City” a lot of crime is evident in Mexico City. There are two disputing gangs in Mexico City called the Zetta and La Familia. The two gangs have caused the number of drug violence deaths in the past 6 years to be 60,000. Many citizens of Mexico City could not make enough money at their jobs so they were forced to move in to slums and tenements where they could find poor housing for cheap. Impoverished people are forced to use their resources around them to make meals and homes.
Although my conflict was not one that most people would encounter, it really did change me. During the spring break of 2012, my youth group and I went out to Grapevine Lake in Grapevine, Texas for what seemed like a perpetual day for me. We rented jet skis to ride in the middle of the lake. After the class on how to operate a jet ski and basic jet ski guidelines ended, we were distributed life jackets. Mine was a little to relaxed for my body, but the brash thirteen year old me at the time highly believed that I didn’t need one, so I kept mute. Since I was under the age of sixteen, I could not legally maneuver a jet ski, so I boarded the back of my chaperone’s jet ski. We surpassed the “no throttle” zone, he hit the gas with a prodigious amount of force, and I was instantly elated to be on the tail end of the ski.
Religious wars started with religious tension between Protestant and Roman Catholic people. One being, the King of Spain, Philip II, tried to force people of England to go back to the Roman Catholic Church. He sent Spanish Armada that had 30,000 men to go take the throne away from Queen Elizabeth who was Protestant. Their effort did not work and crumbled when English forces sent ships and the Spanish vessels scattered all over the North Sea. Another reasoning behind these wars was religious convictions and irritations with the Netherlands and Spanish. Philip issued an army to go to the Netherlands to put down the Calvinist movement in 1567. Their resistance against the Spanish lead to a full out war of rebellion. The Netherlands had won their
It’s safe to say that, even if someone claims to know little to nothing about Spain’s history, the names Franco, Hitler, and Mussolini ring a bell in their mind. Simply being able to recognize these names proves some knowledge on the subject of the Spanish Civil War, lasting from 1936 to 1939. For those who are unsure as to what qualifies as a civil war, dictionary.com defines it as, “a war between parties, factions, or inhabitants of different regions within the same nation”. In the case of the Spanish Civil War, the fight was between the Spanish republican government and the Nationalist military. Representative of the impeding power struggle between extremists in support of fascism and communism, the war began on July 18th, 1936 as an uprising by several Spanish officers. This uprising would spark the three year Spanish civil war that ultimately resulted in a 40 year dictatorship.
I would agree that’s a major part of it, however also I think it was more an incentive to get banks to loan out more money for growing the housing market. One of the goals is believed that encouraging people to move from urban to rural is better than just increasing the urban population. I think this could be related to how our parents and grandparents think, because as our economy becomes more service related rather than manufacturing and exportation of products, our economy becomes a little unstable. Often as we get away from these occupations we start providing services that aren’t necessary but due to the number of people in curtain cities the possibilities
Los Angeles was the first product off the assembly line of American urban planning. Turned on in the late 19th century, the city-making machine was fueled by an immense immigration of people who sought to create a new type of city out of the previously quaint pueblo. They also strove to craft the first major city developed primarily by Americans and outside of European archetypes. As a result, Los Angles is not only incredibly diverse, but also nearly impossible to define. Since it is a product of the American machine, understanding the community of Los Angeles becomes vital to understanding the United States. But to fully comprehend the present Los Angeles, one must look at the process that created it. Specifically, Los Angeles was
La Langouste was created in 1949 close to the end of the World War II and the beginning of the Cold War. Picasso was affected because of the Civil War in Spain, so the reason that might impulse him to create this paint is to show that wealthy people were still having their amenities although many other people were starving. Also, the butterfly might represent the freedom that he wanted. Moreover, in that time Picasso was living in Paris. For this reason Picasso might have paint le lobster served in the way that it is. Everybody knows that Paris is known for being a elegant city where people accustom to eat fancy dishes; for example, lobster. This paint shows the culture of Paris. Additionally, the tablecloth is in small squares, which are common
Crime affects the community any numerous ways. On the individual level, crime makes people feel unsafe, especially if they witness crime. Areas where crime rates are above average, residents deal with reduction in housing equity and property value. Gangs especially divided neighborhoods previously built by family’s in their post WWII economic boom. These neighborhoods are now territories in both urban and rural areas. By which, gang activity advocates deviant behavior ranging from prostitution and drug dealing, too human trafficking and execution style assaults on conflicting or rival gangs. Population reduction is a huge issue in the more urban areas with high crime rates. Modes of transportation and the time of day to travel all become variables in the function of (How to avoid crime and conflict) day to day life by individuals.
