Currently, within the Strength & Conditioning department of the athletic program at North Greenville University, I believe there are four major issues that need to be addressed as soon as possible. These issues are causes an inefficiently within the program and has Graduate Assistants, like me, working nearly 120 hours a week, making it extremely tough to complete what I am here to do, which is get a Master’s degree in Business Administration.
The first problem that I believe needs to be addressed is the number of Strength & Conditioning coaches that we have on staff. Nearly 500 student-athletes come through the Athletic Performance Center at North Greenville University each day. According to the National Strength & Conditioning

With only a limited number of eyes and a lot of weight being moved around, injuries are much more common thus putting everyone within the performance center in danger. I think that the most efficient recommendation that I could make for this problem is to utilize the process of forecasting. The school’s administration, athletic department and strength coaches must forecast the number of student-athletes that are going to be in the performance center each day, week, semester and year. This is something that needs to be forecasted so that the appropriate number of strength and conditioning coaches are employed and present during lifting/training groups. This first problem is also associated with the second problem.
Scheduling within the Strength & Conditioning department is a process that is currently executed extremely poorly. There are many things that have to be scheduled within the strength and conditioning department of the athletic program. One of these things being specific sports teams and their assigned lifting times. The current process for this type of scheduling is to ask coaches what time they want and what the student-athletes schedules look like so that we can schedule the lifting time. All of the teams are given an hour time slot, which I do not disagree with. This is enough time to get all of the work that need to get done with that team completed. Right now, because we only have a couple strength coaches available during
At this point in the semester, I am five weeks into my practicum. Throughout the past five weeks I have come to learn a lot from Tyler, the Sports Coordinator at the Y. One of the biggest surprises that I have learned from this experience is the amount of time and team effort it takes to be a sports coordinator. While at the Y I have helped Tyler run and supervise different sports programs for the youth and with every new program there is more and more work that goes into it. When I started at the Y, there was already a session in progress. Each session is eight weeks in duration and there are several programs within the session. Now that the previous session has ended Tyler is showing me how to create the next session. With this I have observed that there is a lot of team effort that goes into building these programs.
The KIN organization that I am doing my risk management project on is Eastside Centre in East Peoria, Illinois. This facility has been in use for quite some time, but they usually keep everything up to date and maintained. The three main sections that I am examining are the weight room, basketball court, and the indoor track. I am not examining the outdoor track or the baseball complex that is outside. Eastside is a top-notch fitness and athletic facility. It not only allows people to be fit, but also hosts tournaments on the national, regional and local levels in softball, baseball, volleyball, soccer and also track. It also hosts high school events for East Peoria Community High School and also Central Junior High School baseball,
While football players at the University of Illinois are working at their sport or performing their sport nearly 32 hours a week, which is all right after coming from a full class schedule. The NCAA wants to treat student athletes like regular students, when these athletes are the farthest thing from being regular students. These athletes are expected just like the rest of the student body to perform at their highest capability in the classroom, but as well at their peak athletic ability in practice or in a game right after they have spent the day draining themselves into their school
and going to class. By managing time and effort to go to school in the morning, attending
The field of Athletic Training is a never-ending learning experience. This career can be very time demanding and some may find themselves on their feet for majority of the workday. Always being on the move can be hard to gather new information, or new ways to benefit the skills acquired in this field. Athletic Training is a very broad field, which contains skills, methods, and research. Athletic Trainers (ATs) are health care providers for those who are injured. Most people recognize ATs as first responders in professional sports, collegiate sports, and high school sports. What some people may not know is that ATs collaborate with physicians to provide them with the primary diagnostic when the injury occurred. Other services that ATs provide
Athletes are sometimes overworked because coaches and colleges think they need to practice all the time. College athletes go through grueling practices, meaningful games and practice over 40 hours a week (Kahn). These athletes spend too much time practicing to work on actual college class work. Athletes are more of an employee than a student with the amount of practice they have. These players do not have enough time to do it all. “the schedule is akin to a full time job, with 40 to 50 hours a week devoted to football-related activities”(He). Football players, whether it is practice or not, spend way too much time doing football activities to get homework or other school related things done. Sports are a big part of these kid’s life but it should not be their entire life. Athletes will have nothing to fall back on if colleges work them so much with practices and not enough with school. Having all of this practice time may not help them prepare for the real life after college. All that colleges would have to do is have the sports teams focus a little bit less on practice time and maybe a little bit more on actual school. College students need to be prepared for life after college and practicing all the time does not
College athletic programs should be kept as an important part of the athlete’s academic schedule, and student athletes are considered an important part the student body. Every university or community college’s admissions and scholastic excellence for student-athletes should be planned to encourage educational success and
While continuing chapter seven I continue to learn more and more about Intercollegiate Athletics. The next three topics its talks about is athletic conferences, basics of college sport finance, and director of athletics. Chapter 7 is continuously gives information about intercollegiate athletics. Chapter 7 also talks about first line managers.
Five guys from Maine decided to take their knowledge— passion for sports— and use it to open one of the most successful sports facilities in the nation. Chi-Town Elite is a three-sport training facility located in the heart of North Chicago. The three-floor training facility on 410 Excellence Drive is truly one of a kind: a one of the reason why it’s located on Excellence drive. We have fields, courts and specialized weight rooms for the three major sports of football, basketball and baseball. We also have a public weight room open to the public and a cheap membership. We attract athletes at the high school and college level’s aspiring to make it to the next level and improve their game. We have a very experienced
On May 11, 2017, Dundee Central School had a Board of Education meeting. Nine members were in attendance. The main focal point of the meeting was student Athletics. Member Kelly Houck brought up that student Athletics are becoming an issue with attendance. Less and less kids are participating in sports. She stressed that this was not a budget issue, it was a capacity issue.
This article takes a look into how to change the perception of college athletics by making universities realign their athletic department to the university’s mission of academics. Gordon Gee is spearheading this reform throughout the NCAA and started this by moving Vanderbilt’s athletic department into their Division of Student Life department. This is just one of the ways he believes universities can reform their athletic department. Many believe that athletes take easy classes in order to keep their GPA up so they remain eligible for their sports , which in some cases are true as mentioned in $chooled: The price of College Sports (2013) a documentary that looked into the world of college sports. They discussed that some students were taking
It is important to first understand the complex and structured program that college swimmers have to follow with discipline in order to meet the high expectations of elite athletic departments. According to research, the amount of physical training for swimmers has greatly increased over the last decades (Bompa, 1985; Murphy, Fleck, Dudley & Callister, 1990). A combination of intensity, duration and frequency of training stimuli is a key characteristic for efficient training (Faude, Meyer, Scharhag, Weins, Urhausen & Kindermann). There is evidence that exponential increases in volume of physical training will increase an athlete’s physiological capacity which often leads to increases in performance
The Auburn University Athletics Department continues to make major strides in benefiting students, Auburn fans, and the general public. As the Assistant Athletic Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communication at Auburn University, Cassie Arner focuses on a multitude of tasks to keep the public informed of many parts and corresponding activities of the university 's athletic programs, ranging anywhere from managing a chaotic game day to handling legal crises among student-athletes or faculty members. As a main figure in Auburn 's branch of athletics, Arner oversees short and long-term communication strategies designed to enhance the overall support of the college 's National Collegiate Athletic Association ("NCAA") Division I sports programs.
Even though student-athletes are perceived as students enrolled in a higher education institution, like everyone else, they must develop a balance between their academic and athletic demands. From my own research, Patrick Hudson explains how those demands are “extremely difficult to manage, especially when you have over 30 hours of commitments to football” (Personal Interview). This real example is important because it describes that athletes live a hectic lifestyle with countless of hours of work. In addition to their demands, UT’s student-athlete manual determines an athlete’s lifestyle. This manual list the academic and athletic requirements student-athletes must uphold to continue their athletic vocation. They include: enrolling in 12 hours, fulfilling coursework that is applicable to a course degree, satisfy coaches with their performance, maintain a 2.0 GPA, and compete for four seasons (“Student Athlete Manual” pg. 36). Furthermore, the previous requirements entail that sports are not like most extracurricular organizations where participation and membership renewal is optional. Athletes’ participation in a sport requires dedication and time commitment to prove their consistency to the team. Most of us are considered full time students, can you imagine adding “over 30 hours of” long workout routines after a tiring day from attending classes and doing homework (Hudson)?
Athletics and academics go hand in hand, in college. There is a direct connection between the two. Although numerous of people could say that this association is viewed as a con, it frequently depends on the level of competition or determination made by the athlete. The truth behind this association is that athletics are a good thing for academics. The stereotype “dumb jock” has an extensive history in the American culture. But only in the 1970 's did the media begin seriously examining whether student-athletes were indeed students. In the past 20 years, the NCAA has established new rules that attempt to mandate that athletes must get a decent education (Funk). There are many reasons why this may be true. One of the biggest reasons is because of the discipline athletes have toward their sports which carries over to their school work and personal life.
