Erick E. Garcia Vonda Ford English 6 February 2015 Arming Teachers and School Employees--think of a catchier title Since 1992, 387 school shootings have occurred. In addition, 323 students have died in documented shootings over the past 15 years. 323 innocent lives were taken. 323 hearts were stolen from families. 323 futures of America disappeared forever, and school violence rates have only been climbing. Since 2012, school crimes have risen 52 dead students per 1000 students. Children five to fourteen are five times more likely to be murdered in the U.S. and the facts are here to prove it. 28 children brutally murdered at Sandy Hook in 2012, and all because they had no defense. Virginia Tech had 33 fatalities in 2007, and they are University’s with security. The question has been asked, what should we do about these incidents to stop them from happening again? Should we make all firearms illegal? That wouldn’t help, guns would still be on the streets, just like drugs. Should we barricade schools and not permit anyone to enter or leave during school? Then we ask, what if the shooter is inside? How would people get out, and how would the police get in? So still, the question is asked, what would be the fastest and safest method to protect America’s children? One solid answer would be arming teachers and school employees. If we did this, there would be an immediate response in case of emergency, and school predators would be more intimidated to enter school grounds
