Through the course of history, the theme of war has been highlighted, dating back as far as Homer’s Iliad written around the year(s) 800 – 700 BC. The glorification of the heroic ideals of warriors took a turn over the middle ages and drastically redefined how poetry took to it after the advent of gunpowder. It is important to note here of what caused such a shift of emphasis on wars and warriors. The key aspect was the technological advancement of modern warfare, dealing damage and destruction in scale previously unimaginable and possibly paving way to new forms of warfare complimented by new ideologies and advent of postmodernity. It is written in alternating seven-line stanzas (rhyme scheme: ABABBCC) and eight-line stanzas in a ballad format (rhyme scheme: ABCBDEFE). The poem achieves extends itself not only to the war of the contemporary times but also move beyond to prophesise that the future of warfare will bring forth only death and misery. The poem is contextualised in the episode of Iliad where Achilles’ shield has been taken by Patroclus to battlefield where he get slain and the shield taken away by Hector. Due to this, Thetis, the mother to Achilles and a Goddess requests Hephaestus to craft a new shield for her son Achilles. The poem depicts how Thetis loves her son and wishes all boon for Achilles and the world which comes in stark contrast with what Hephaestus engraves on the shield. The second stanza pictures a “sky like lead” depicting;
This is very symbolic of the two world wars which saw millions of life sacrificed in warfare and war crimes. Moreover, the unintelligible multitude is unable to see through the banality of warfare, that all the killing is sooner or later leading to the doom of mankind.
