People in this country have many different ideas on how this country should be ran. There are many ways that the people can let America know about their ideas and this is through American third parties. This paper will discuss the views of the three largest third parties which are the Libertarian, Green and, Constitution parties. The views of these three parties will also be compared to the two dominant parties, Republican and Democratic.
The Libertarian Party is a political third party that was founded in 1971. This Party supports limited government interference , personal rights , the protection of citizens and avoiding conflict unless it is necessary. Libertarians are more liberal than Democrats, but more conservative than the Republicans.

Nolan’s Home. The party was officially formed on December 11, 1971. This party was founded in concerns for the Vietnam War, the end of the gold standard , Nixon administration , and the conscription. The Libertarian party has more of a classical liberal platform while the Democrats have more of a modern liberal and progressive platform. The party is more liberal than the Democrats but more fiscally conservative than the Republican party. There are about 410,000 registered Libertarian voters in the 27 states that report Libertarian registration statistics. This party has never won in the United States Congress but it has had electoral success in the context of state legislatures as other local offices. Between 1978 and 1984 there were three Libertarians that were elected to the Alaska House of Representatives and there were also four more that were elected in the New Hampshire General Court in 1992 . The last time a libertarian was elected to a state legislature was in 1998 to Vermont House of Representatives; Neil Randall was the one that won this election. In 2011 Daniel P. Gordon from the Rhode Island House of Representatives was expelled from the Republicans and joined the Libertarians (Libertarian Party (United States)).
The Green Party is a green and progressive political party. The Green Party promotes environmentalism, nonviolence, social justice, participatory grassroots democracy, gender equality, LGBT rights and anti-racism. Environmentalism is a social movement that regards the concerns for environmental protection and the health of the environment.Social justice is the fair relation between society and the individual. In a participatory or grassroots democracy decision making is left to the members of the population instead to those who are in charge (Green Party of the United
Political parties today started to form in the late 1600’s. In 1787, Hamilton and other leaders joined and called themselves the Federalist. The Federalist party is the party which is most qualified for the presidency because the Federalist want a central government, want to avoid foreign affairs, and also want a central banking system. First a strong central governments.
“It is a natural evolution of our mass consciousness to begin to see third parties as a viable option; it is reflected in the corrupt and broken two-party system.” Michelle Augello-Page, an author and writer, uses this quote to speak to the frustration Americans feel about the two-party political system. Since the 1850’s, the Democrats and Republicans have received the majority of the popular vote, while third party candidates struggle election after election (Schechter). The two major party candidates don’t always speak to the issues many Americans want to be addressed. Therefore, Americans must consider voting for third party candidates to ensure democracy works for everyone.
There are two main political parties that dominate politics in the in the United States: The Democratic and Republic Parties. It turns out that these two political parties are opposed to each other on a wide range of issues that affect American public life. Unfortunately, many Americans are unaware of these differences between the two parties and tend to vote their officials into office in an uneducated manner. This often results in the political gridlock that often characterize government business in Washington. The Republican and Democratic Party don 't have much in common but they do have a a lot of things that they oppose from each other. Some issues that both parties have in common support the death penalty. But on issues like abortion Democrats think that should be made legal while Republicans think that it should be illegal. In this essay, I shall examine the ideological positions of either party on a number of these issues in order to define my own allegiance towards either of them.
There were many events that lead to America splitting into two political parties in the 1790’s. The two parties are the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans and when it comes to the government they have completely different views. The Federalists were lead by George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and John Adams and lived mainly in the north. They strongly supported the central government because they believed that the government should be big and strong. The Democratic Republicans lived mainly in the west and south and were lead by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The Democratic Republicans were against a big government and believed the states should have more power. Political parties were created in the 1790’s because of the war between
The third party in American national politics has been unsuccessful, rarely making a big impact although not unprecedented. The Constitution, on the other hand, makes third parties unviable. Third party candidates, such as Ross Perot, who ran as an independent in 1992 have made a great impact on the national politics, forcing both Republican and Democratic Party candidates to debate the issue of a balanced budget. However, the third party has not had much success in the national politics due to lack of media coverage, the nature of the electoral system, and restrictive ballot access laws.
The democratic and republican parties have been the two strongest American political parties since the 1860’s. One of the first parties was the federalist party, they were the supporters of conservative businessmen, merchants planters and large landowners.the federalist party was supported by a union of states that made a strong federal government. alexander hamilton was the leader of the party.Against them was the democratic-republican party also know as anti-federalists who favored a strict interpretation of the constitution and strong state governments than a strong central one.
Democrats are typically more in favor of government regulated economy and personal freedom, Libertarian who often are moderate Democrats and Republicans are for personal freedom and free market economy, and Republicans are more conservative on social values and free market economy driven. Again these are generalizations and people on both sides have different opinions on different issues than this chart.
There were many important members of the Libertarian Party. The first presidential candidate who ran for the libertarian party was John Hospers. Hospers was inspired by Ayn Rand and her objectivist philosophy. Objectivism is the philosophy of rational individualism founded by Ayn Rand. After Hospers spoke with Ayn Rand and became friends with her, Hospers gained much perspective and knowledge on objectivism and they also spoke on the role of government. Objectivism became a large part of Libertarian beliefs and politics. Ayn Rand is an icon for the political party as she inspired the beliefs of all libertarians on individualism and freedom. In 1971, Hospers published a book called Libertarianism: A Political Philosophy for Tomorrow, which would
The Democratic Party wants to crack especially on gangs and drugs. They want to prevent these crimes with community police. Also, they want to make use of the death penalty, including post-conviction reviews on death penalty sentences. The Republican Party also wants to make use of the death penalty. They say criminals behind bars cannot harm the public. Their method of preventing crime is to further enforce existing laws. They also say there should be more victims’ rights. The Libertarian says the Three Strikes approach is illusory and dangerous. They believe the death penalty has failed. For some bad reason, they say drugs, alcohol, prostitution, gambling, and suicide is okay. They want to strengthen the rights of the accused. Hate crimes
The libertarian party was originated in Westminster, Colorado and was found in 1971 by David Nolan. This party is the only political party that respects individual rights in a unique way. They are known for party of principles which is a representation of the principles of an individuals’ rights if its honest and peaceful not interfering or harming other individuals’. They give the individuals rights by limiting the government so they don’t interfere in a negative way. This is illustrated by personal, economical, and security liberty.
Libertarians advocate for small government, one that is limited to protecting individuals from violence and coercion, and one that opposes bureaucracy and taxes. The focal point of the party are the values of individual liberty and autonomy. These are values our government should model their political agenda around, because I believe that I should be able to make responsible decisions without the interference of any outside force stemming from the government or another individual.
Very few people argue the importance of third parties in the United States. Since 1840, Third parties have captured over 5% of the popular vote in a third of elections and have won 10% of popular vote in one out of five elections (McDaniel, 2015). Without third parties, majority of votes would be a necessity; these third parties have made it possible for over a dozen presidents to be elected without the majority of popular vote (McDaniel, 2015).
The Libertarian party began on December 11, 1971, in Westminster, Colorado. Even though in 1971, it achieved its height of success in
A definition of Libertarianism that is well supported by a large portion of its practitioners comes from Noble Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman; that, “Libertarians want the smallest, least-intrusive government consistent with maximum freedom for each individual to follow his own ways, his own values, as long as he doesn’t interfere with anyone else’s doing the same.” Put simply, it affords for individuals to live as they wish, so long as they do not hinder the ability of another to do so as well. Central to the doctrine is the Non-Aggression Principal (NAP), explained by Ron Paul as, “The core of libertarianism…respect for the life, liberty and property rights of each individual. This means that no one may initiate force against another, as that violates those natural rights.” However, this article is not about the viability of such a system. Rather, it concerns the place of Libertarianism, and Libertarian voters, in the modern, two party system.
According to a 2015 study by the Pew Research Center, 81% of Americans have distrust for the government, 74% believe elected officials put their own interests first, and 65% harbor distrust for Republicans and Democrats. (Fingerhut). In spite of these numbers, main party candidates continue to be elected into office. Americans cannot vote third party for fear of a wasted vote, or literally cannot vote third party due to the historically unfair standards third parties must meet to gain ballot access. There currently are third parties in the US but with the US’s system of voting, no third party can rise to the same level of the Democrats or Republicans. Historically, the US has had several third parties run successful campaigns, but in modern
