The central idea of this story is about race, and the inability for a person to be the master of his or her own destiny, when they live in an unfair and prejudicial system.

The speaker will read one question relating to these core tenets. Parents will raise his or her hand to answer the question. The presenter will continue to call on a parent to answer the question until a correct response is given. The parents will place a colored chip on the grid if they have the correct answer on their grid. There will be more questions asked than squares listed on the BINGO cards. The winner of the game must have colored chips in all squares filled either across, diagonal, or in each of the four corners of the BINGO card. When a parent fills the required squares they say BINGO. To ensure fairness, a BINGO answer sheet will be placed on a screen so parents check his or her BINGO sheet for accuracy.

Hi! I am Jennifer and I want to share my bingo experience! Where I live bingo is not a very popular game. It was hard to find a North Dakota bingo hall! But when I finally found it, I was ecstatic! There are three characters in the story. The protagonist and his wife are struggling with their life and emphasize the theme of hopelessness. The protagonist is a nameless African American who comes from the southern U.S. At the beginning of the story, he is watching a movie of a woman tied down to a bed. He tries to enjoy the movie, but Laura comes to his mind. Laura is the protagonist’s wife, as well as the incentive for the man to win the bingo game. The man is powerless and hopeless in the society, “he gets no birth certificate to get a job and Laura ‘bout to die’ cause they have no money for a doctor” (242). Thus, winning the bingo game is the only way he can pay a doctor to treat his sick wife. He must win the game because it is his only chance to save her. After he finds he gets all the bingo numbers correct, standing on the stage to spin the wheel to win the prize. He feels compelled to press the button because there is a voice in his mind: “who held the prize who was the king of bingo (246).” The man wants to be the king and overcomes all the difficulties in order to control his own life. He hopes to keep the bingo wheel whirling forever, only in this way Laura will be safe and he has the imagery that “if she is not safe, the wheel will cease

To start with, the lottery itself is a huge symbol. Usually, lotteries are associated with winning money. Whereas, the lottery in this short story has a negative outcome of death. Notably, the lottery is a tradition in the town. Since this event has been taking place for many years, they do not even need to explain the lottery to the villagers. Old Man Warner, the oldest man in town, makes a point to everyone that there has always been a lottery. The villagers are loyal to this tradition.

The once boring slow game is now a fast paced exciting game where players play multiple cards, smoke, converse, philosophize, eat, and even read as they play.If regular Bingo players have anything at all in common it is their ability to find any given number very quickly. This is a skill not very useful in the real worldbut essential to the game of Bingo.Because of the gambling nature of the game -Bingo has said to very addictive. We all have, at one time or another, day dreamed about what we would do if we won the lottery. Some of those dreams could include traveling to exotic places, buy a new home, and help family and friends, just to name a few of the dreams.
