The tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet are not the fault of just one person; it is the fault of many. In fact, the blame could be placed on each character – if anyone acted in a different way, there could have been a different ending. Some had a greater impact on their deaths than others however, namely the families and the feud, the Friar Lawrence, Mercutio, Balthasar and Romeo & Juliet themselves. Some may argue for other characters, but the actions of these five ultimately had a more prominent effect on their suicide. One of the factors most to blame is the families’ feud and the restrictions it placed upon the young lovers. The bitter feud made life very difficult for Romeo and Juliet, leading them to make some poor decisions to …show more content…
He questioned Romeo’s sudden change of heart from Rosaline, but still went ahead with the marriage. He should instead have told Romeo to be patient, to sort his feelings out and decide if what he is feeling for Juliet was truly love or simply lust before moving forward any further. Friar Lawrence also designed that disastrous plan which had many possibilities to fail. He could not guarantee the delivery of the letter, or that the news of Juliet’s ‘death’ would reach Romeo. Again, he saw a chance to unite the lovers and their families without proper consideration of what he was doing. Had he not made such impetuous decisions, perhaps deaths could have been avoided, including the death of Romeo’s close friend Mercutio. Mercutio was a worthy friend of Romeo’s, but sadly he would contribute to his friend’s death. Mercutio could be blamed for the meeting of Romeo and Juliet; he was the one that persuaded Romeo to go to the costume party even though he did not wish to. Mercutio should have listened to his friend’s concerns and not pressured him to attend. Another example is during the fighting scene, where Romeo
Beside Lord Capulet and Romeo, Friar Lawrence is also directly responsible for Juliet’s death. He makes not only one, but three major mistakes that all results in death of Juliet. To begin with he gives a potion to Juliet. At this time, Friar Lawrence is the only person that Juliet will fully trust, however, Friar Lawrence shows his irresponsibility by saying, “If…thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself…take thou this vial” (). In this circumstance, Friar’s plan is very risky for unstable Juliet. He decides to take risk rather than thinks for a better plan. Juliet’s fake death does fools all the people, however, Juliet will never lie on the monument if Friar Lawrence does not give Juliet the potion, and Juliet will not die at last. Next mistake that Friar Lawrence makes is he let Friar John to send the letter, who does not know how important the letter is. It is inexcusable to let someone else to do this urgent thing. Friar John shows his incompetence when he says “I could not send it, here it is again” (). The letter is one of the most crucial symbol in the play. To a certain extent, Friar John fails send the letter to Romeo foreshadow the play will have a tragedy ending. If Friar Lawrence delivers the letter by himself, the plan may proceed perfectly. Romeo and Juliet, the Shakespearean playwright of two star crossed lovers, ends in two tragic deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. Who can be hold responsible for their deaths, when so many things went wrong along the way? Many could be held responsible for the deaths of the two lovers, but Romeo himself deserves to carry the heavier load of responsible for not only his death, but the death of his lover, Juliet as well. The story of Romeo and Juliet is the best tragedy ever to be written. The tale of two adolescents taking their lives because of their love for one another has inspired a lot of controversy as to whether the adults surrounding these adolescents could have done something to prevent this tragedy. The truth is the adults in the situation are ultimately to blame for the deaths of their love struck teens. This essay will explain why Friar Laurence, Nurse and to a lesser extent Mercutio, caused the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
Friar Lawrence is the man who marries Romeo and Juliet and devises the plan to fake Juliet’s death. Friar Lawrence says, “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be; for this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households rancour to pure love” (Doc C). Friar Lawrence does not think that Romeo and Juliet are ready to be married, but he thinks it may end the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues so he takes the risk anyway. This is encouraging the forbidden love between Romeo and Juliet and allowing more possibility for something to go wrong for them. Friar Lawrence doesn't have faith that Romeo and Juliet will have a happy marriage; he says, “so heavens smile upon this holy act… These violent delights have violent ends…” (Doc C). He also says “And, if thou darest, I’ll give thee remedy,” (Doc C) regarding the potion he gives Juliet to help her fake her death. He continually appears to encourage Romeo and Juliet’s bad decisions by making them become reality. This contributes to the deaths of the lovers.
Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, was originally published in 1597. Until this day, the play is very well known worldwide. The classic love story is set in Verona and is about a long feud between the Montague and Capulet families. This feud causes the death of their beloved children, Romeo and Juliet, who are described as “star-crossed lovers.” It is a play of contrasts of love and hate, joy and sorrow, light and dark, youth and age, life and death. Some readers will blame the main characters, Romeo and Juliet for bringing about their tragic deaths, however some may argue that other characters are responsible for their deaths, with only little of the blame to be placed on Romeo and Juliet.
1. Friar Lawrence makes many mistakes in Romeo and Juliet, perhaps the biggest two being marrying Romeo and Juliet without telling anyone and leaving Juliet all alone in the tomb. Friar Lawrence marries Romeo and Juliet for a good reason, hoping to “turn your households’ rancour to pure love. (2.3.99)” Friar Lawrence marries Romeo and Juliet to try and from peace between both the Capulets and Montagues, but it only works after both of them die. On top of this, Friar Lawrence makes another mistake when he leaves Juliet in the tomb even though she has just seen her beloved husband die. Friar Lawrence leaves because “I hear some noise…I dare no longer stay. (5.3.156-164)” Without even trying to help Juliet, he exits while Juliet is in a tomb surrounded by a just dead Romeo and many of her ancestors. This foolish move on Friar Lawrence gets Juliet killed, bringing the death total up to five, which later totals six.
The first thing Friar Lawrence does is secretly marry the two lovers. He does not think about the consequences his actions may have and what could result. In Overview of Romeo and Juliet, the author states “...for the monk does not endorse Romeo and Juliet’s impulsive behavior, but rather cautions them to ‘love moderately’” (2). The friar agrees to marry the two because it may resolve the feud between the Capulets and Montagues, but he never gives Romeo and Juliet any useful advice. Friar Lawrence also conceives a plan for Juliet without thinking it through. His plan is for Juliet to take a sleeping potion so she’ll appear dead and get out of her arranged marriage with Paris. Friar Lawrence and Romeo would then take Juliet out of her tomb so Romeo and Juliet can run away together. This plan has many flaws, but Juliet agrees anyway because she is willing to kill herself to get out of the marriage. Friar Lawrence claims that “If, rather than to marry County Paris, thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself, then is it likely thou wilt undertake a thing like death to chide away this shame...” (Rom. 4.1.72-75). One of the mistakes that goes wrong with the plan is that Romeo never receives the information that Juliet is not really dead. Friar Lawrence gives Friar John a letter with this crucial information, but fails to tell Friar John the significance of the

The characters most responsible for the deaths of the lovers are Friar Lawrence, Mercutio, Benvolio, and Tybalt. The four characters each play their own role in fanning the flames that terminate the couple’s bliss and prompt the final deaths.
“Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou?” (2.2. 36), could be one of the most well known quotes from Shakespeare’s tragic and romantic play Romeo and Juliet. In this quote, Juliet is asking why Romeo has to be a Montague; she cannot marry him because he is a family enemy. In the end of the story, the two lovers are finally joined together by taking their own lives. Although it was their choice to die, there were many people who influenced them into taking such a path.
