Introduction Over the past six years, I have witnessed Hy-Vee undergo significant organizational changes, predominantly in pharmacy. The reorganization method have assisted pharmacies to yield more efficient figures and earnings. Structural modifications such as an innovative computer system and a central fill processing facility has upgraded the workflow. This has allowed the pharmacist to have additional time to aid our patients, which is ultimately what our goal is. There were undoubtedly fears about whether restructuring would be fruitful. In order to grasp how immense of an impact central fill was going to have, we first need to understand the structure of the Hy-Vee pharmacy, its various components, and the employees that make it up.
Pill Counters We learned in class that organizations are social structures that are created to pursue a specific goal. To illustrate this concept, we need to understand the origin of pharmacies. Pharmacies were fashioned to offer patients with a safe way of receiving medications. The pharmacy is universal, but the general public has little appreciation of what goes on behind the scenes. A majority of the public undoubtedly believe that a pharmacist just pours the pills from a big bottle to a smaller one. In actuality, pharmacists seldom ever count. A tech or intern will typically have that duty. Pharmacists devote the majority of their time verifying prescriptions, checking for drug-drug interactions, and counseling patients about
There is a system in the business world just like the system in the drug-manufacturing world where the levels of power branch out making a pyramid of rank and authority. In every big business corporation you have the general manager (GM) who is typically involved in making decisions pertaining to the direction of the entire company and is in charge of overseeing all areas of the corporation. The same logic is applied in the drug world, the government or any other provider, grows and distributes the herb all over the country hiring people to sell and make a profit for them. The dealers chose where and who to sell to and how much, being in total control of their business. Next in the corporation’s chain of command, there are managers who are responsible for caring out the goals set by the top management. Drug dealers appoint people to distribute and sell their product to members of society trusting that they will be successful in making a profit. These individuals usually know others who will purchase and become regular customers; also they will probably end up bringing more business in as well. Another level of business is the customer. Without these people you can never profit or grow to become a successful organization in which people know you and are loyal to your company. This takes place in both the big corporations and the drug world. The chain of command is where most of the conflict takes place among people, they
During the two and a half years of my pharmacy journey, I have been thinking what can a pharmacist do within the healthcare interprofessional team to better help the patients in order to achieve the best health outcome. I work in a clinic as well as inpatient pharmacy, additionally, I had my rotations at CVS and Regions Hospital. all these experiences shape my version of the pharmacists at different settings. Therefore, in various pharmacy settings, pharmacists can work differently with the whole healthcare team. The recent PED-Rx events inspired me how important pharmacists can play roles in when working in a team.
The popular sector in the United States is something that carries a large impact on the individuals. Many people will choose to ask others for advice or figure out what they need themselves, rather than go to the doctor. From my quick ethnographic research in the pharmacy sections in a couple of different stores, I noticed some interesting similarities and some differences in how people interact in this sector. Many individuals had some sort of communication going with others about what product they should get, whether it be in person or on the phone. They also had some interesting differences between them. Both times that I went there was an overwhelming majority of females to males.
Pharmacists are health care professionals that work in their communities to raise the quality of life for the patients they serve. Pharmacists have been working at Consumer Values Stores (CVS) since their first doors opened in 1963. The company has since largely expanded and has become the second largest retail-pharmacy chain in the United States with more than 8,000 store nationwide. CVS is a billion dollar company and has since changed its corporate name to CVS Health along with becoming a leader in corporate social responsibility. The chain is going to great lengths to improve public health all over the country by doing such things as ceasing the sale of cigarettes in its stores and starting a nation-wide smoking cessation program called “We’re Tobacco Free”. CVS has also partnered with MinuteClinic to operate inside some of its stores.
This reflection about my rotations I did my first year in pharmacy school. It was at a long term care facility. My partner was Kelsey Duerson and we went to every other Thursday. This activity did not increase my awareness about my culture. it showed me how geriatric population are treated in this part of the country. I feel like when you get old and you have medical conditions, because we are very busy with our lives we have to take seniors to a facility where they all live in order for health care professionals will successfully take care of them. This is different from my culture because it is not what we do in Nigeria. We take care of our parents when they get old. We do not take them to any facility. They stay home with us. My perception
Technicians help licensed pharmacists dispense medication to patients. They receive the prescription, enter it into
One of the most important responsibilities of a pharmacist—whether in a hospital or community setting—is to help people. I was able to observe this critical factor portrayed by my clinical instructors at both St. Francis and at Walgreens. All the pharmacists I worked with during those two weeks displayed a genuine desire to improve their patients’ quality of life by ensuring no drug-drug interactions were present and asking questions about medication histories. I felt humbled and gratified being able to contribute in a minor way when providing
My experience at CVS/Pharmacy is a thorough illustration of the integration of ethics, technology and management. Since the time of Hippocrates, ethics have been at the forefront of importance in the healthcare field with pharmaceuticals bearing no exception. As members of the healthcare team, pharmacy staff have an ethical responsibility to ensure the safety of their patients; thus there is a need to make sure drug and other health information regarding the patient is accurate. Providing the wrong drug or drug dosage and issues of drug-drug interactions are just some of the very serious concerns associated with pharmaceuticals. Another ethical issue that is often related to the healthcare industry is privacy.
Internal stakeholders should be involved in every aspect of your new pharmacy design due to the fact that they are able to lend their expertise based on their experience. It is important that the managers of the pharmacy are capable and trained so that they can in turn train the staff on how they need correctly communicate with customers, doctors, nurses, and

Drugstores have evolved greatly over the years due to increasing competition. By 1990, the drugstore business was changing in various ways. Demographically, there
1. The alternative to using the CPOE is a paper system, this is not ideal because a major source of death in hospitals are preventable, and a 69% of these preventable deaths involve to some capacity patient management. Furthermore, by computerizing patient prescriptions, the hospital reduces the likelihood of errors due to confusion over similar sounding drugs, reduces the need for faxes and other handoffs, and standardizes patient records across the Emory system. Furthermore, this system gives nurses, physician assistants, and pharmacists more time to focus on other tasks, such as ensuring proper medicine is distributed, and less time on routine tasks involving the order system, although this does come at the expense of the doctor spending

At the first glance to ownership in pharmacy subject, I realized that it’s a huge experience to have. Many thoughts had popped up to my mind with many questions. What is the best idea for me to start with? Where should I start? What knowledge do I need to have? How will I finance my project? Is it possible to start my ownership project now or should I wait?
