The Truth About eLearning Globalization and automation are changing the way we educate in the Yakima Valley, nevertheless, our community should not promote eLearning as a good pathway for education after high school. Kurt Vonnegut, a famous American writer and World WarⅡveteran said, “Computers are no more your friends, and no more increasers of your brainpower, than slot machines…Only well-informed, warm-hearted people can teach others things they’ll always remember and love. Computers and TV don’t do that. A computer teaches a child what a computer can become. An educated human being teaches a child what a child can become!”. In making this statement, Vonnegut urges us to teach each other, be taught by each other, and to not authorize …show more content…
What Ford is saying is that the students just don 't really care to complete the course and just quit. These students are very unmotivated to complete the course. Ford goes on to say when talking about an algebra class offered online,”90 percent of those coming directly from high school-failed the course” (134). Early Ford mentioned that this algebra class was offered for 150 dollars. Not only are the classes inexpensive but they allow students to take the class whenever, whenever, if ever.
One of the biggest concerns about online education today is something that Thomas Friedman calls the “ambition gap” (354). The new American generations are becoming less motivated and less ambitious than the rest of the world. Not only is sending american jobs to other countries cheaper but the individuals are much more productive and willing to do the work. Education Online would be enabling these next generation of students laziness. In a Ted Talks seminar, Anant Agarwal, the head of edX, tells his audience why Massive Open Online Courses still matter. Agarwal talks about the changing generations and how we ought to keep up with technology and embrace it in the way we educate. Agrawal insists,” so rather than driving our kids into a classroom, herding them out there at 8 o’clock in the morning-- I hated going to class at 8 o’clock in the morning, so why are we forcing our kids to do that? So instead what you do
With online competency-based education, more people are able to participate in higher education. But for these students to be successful, they need to learn how to learn. As Thomas Friedman points out in his book “The World is Flat”, “The first,
In his article “If Technology Is Making Us Stupid, It’s Not Technology’s Fault,” David Theo Goldberg effectively informs the reader about the effects that computers in the home and school environment could have on the future education of the coming generations. Goldberg achieves this by executing defined organization and adding unique comparisons about the potentially crippling effects technology can have on a society when put into the wrong hands.
In “Reliance on Online Materials Hinders Learning Potential for Students” by David Smith the author argues online education has some benefits students are also able to suffer. Smith begins his article with stating students are lucky for being able to have the amount of access they have to receive education unlike past generations. He goes on by stating “this variety has begun to work its way into academia, as well; more and more, it seems, organized instruction is moving beyond the classroom and into cyberspace” (Smith, Par 3). The “traditional” educational experience is slowly being taken over by the technology world.
In the 21st Century everything is digitized, from emails to the education system. This trend is especially prevalent in Marin County, where the median income is $90,535, nearly double that of the national median income. The elementary schools in the county teach their students to use websites like StudyIsland™ and TypingPal™ to help students learn, study, and excel in the ever evolving technological world. This trend follows in the middle and high school curriculum. With a culture so embedded in technology as a result of the assumption of wealth and access, the district, faculties, and students have grown accustomed to amenities only a minority of people have access to. Certainly, this isn’t the case as there are students who are economically
Every day the world is changing and things are done differently. Technology has also affected the way students are taught and in which they learn. It has changed the classroom. Technology saves us time and allows us to access material in only minutes. “The Internet and online subscription databases, even as a supplement to the printed works in the library, allow students to see, and force them to consider or reject, points of view that they might never have encountered in decades past” (Gow 4).With all the time technology produces, it also has downsides and it also may have created a less intelligent society.

It is no secret that technology plays a critical role in our society. In fact, it has become one of the most used items in the world, starting from personal computers and ending in smartphones, thus it was only a matter of time when educational institutions would start to utilize these gadgets in order to improve the overall state of current education. According to a U.S Department of Education (UDE, n.d) report, all 48 states, including the District of Columbia are now offering online education. Additionally, the report states that these schools operate on all kinds of scales, including state scale, district scale and charter scale, thus it would safe to assume that the whole state of current education in the United States is large and the whole approach is clearly technology based. However, despite the
Learning is more than just receiving information. Traditionally learning was to be in campus, where students would interact with one a another, there were no other ways for learners to get educated beside going to the classroom and listening to the instructor. Nowadays the Internet has brought different ways for people to receive information, such as getting education and degrees online. A few years ago online education was never thinkable, and yet it has become to reality and it is widely expanding with popularity. Online education is a type of educational instruction that delivers learning to individuals to their own homes, and it is getting very popular among nontraditional student and others. Individuals prefer online education
"The future is outside the traditional campus, outside the traditional classroom. Distance learning is coming on fast," says management philosopher Peter Drucker (qtd. in Ebeling and Gubernick). One form of distance learning, on-line education (courses offered over the Internet), has caught the eye of the public and is forcing educators to reevaluate the present state of the educational system. Because of their convenience, cost, and amount of and access to readily-available information, these on-line classes, specifically those in math and computer science, are becoming more and more prevalent throughout the Internet community.
Becoming more fashionable among the newer generations, online learning is bringing tremendous questions to the table. Now, as students are about to embark on their school careers, they are able to choose public, private, home, or online learning. Roughly 5.5 million students are using at least one online class. Now, we ask ourselves, what is best for us and before we can formulate a decision, we must research our possibilities. Having an education is imperative and no one can thrive in life without one. While multiple kids may learn better while sitting in front of a computer and getting their assignments done on their time, other kids may learn better in an actual school. It all depends on the child. As we know, being taught by an instructor has been around for centuries, but online learning was first initiated in 1995 when computers were just starting to become a reality and having a personal computer was still a far-fetched idea, so there was little influence to endorse an online degree. As time when on online learning began to proliferate rapidly. By 1997, colleges in California were offering over 1,000 online courses; meanwhile, 6 years later in 2003, 83% of colleges offer at least one online course. As time goes on, 99% of colleges offer at least 1 online course by 2014. Based on the personal experience and other known facts, public school is the best way to turn since it offers a great deal more than online learning does. Countless schools will not recognize numerous
Education has undergone significant changes because of the development of information and communication technology over the 21st century (Lin & Jou, 2012:2). As a convenient and inexpensive way to gain knowledge while pursuing higher education, online learning, a form of training or teaching that takes place over the Internet, has been considered as an alternative to traditional classroom learning (Zhang et al, 2004). This essay will argue that even though online learning has benefit such as flexibility which could outweigh traditional learning, traditional classroom learning might still not be entirely replaced. This essay will discuss positive and negative aspects of online and traditional learning in terms of four criteria:
When education started moving online it seemed as though it was a shift mostly designed for adults who wanted to further their education, but couldn't balance classes with their work schedules. It opened up a whole new world to those who had never gone to college or had struggled to finish as life got in the way. It had seemed as though online education would stay focused on adults, however, as with any technological advancement, things change and they grow.
With the rapid growth of the Internet, numerous education/training institutes and companies have devoted great efforts and large sum of money to develop e-learning programs for users (Chiu, Sun, et al., 2007). The result of this investment is clearly showing. Online learning became the fastest-growing trend in higher education, quickly surpassing the overall growth of the population enrolled in higher education (Allen & Seaman, 2014)
With the improved living conditions, healthcare, communication, and evolution of human intelligence, technological advancement in the world today has grown to unprecedented levels. For example, as a result of technology, patients can remotely interact with medics located in different parts of the world through telehealth/telemedicine. In the field of education, students do not necessarily need to visit libraries to access books; there are several soft copies of books online that they can access from the comfort of their desktop computers, laptops or even mobile phones. On a more advanced level, learning does not necessarily have to occur only through the reading of books and other traditionally accepted academic sources. The internet is awash with educative information which is even more up to date. In her article “Project Classroom Makeover,” Davidson discusses the potential shift in paradigm presented by technological advancement in the field of education. She argues that with technological advancement, it is no longer necessary to have students sit in class and wait to be guided, instructed, and examined by expertise. On the other side, Sherry Turkle discusses the human-machine interaction in her work “Selections from Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other” as an aspect of the changing paradigm. Nafisi’s article “Selection from Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books then presents a society deficient of modern technology. The
Taking an online course can help a student accomplish anything they would like to do that is education related, such as getting ahead in certain classes, finishing high school early, or maybe even college. Another plus to taking courses online is being able to work at your own pace. Researchers are finding that the slowest student takes five times as long to learn as the fastest (“Online Classes”). Lectures and other materials are electronically sent to the student, who will then read them and complete assignments, which then allows them to do the homework when they would like to and at the speed they learn things (“10 Advantages”).
