The United Parcel Service (UPS) is a company specializing in the collection and the routing of packages throughout the entire world. It represents an excellent example of a corporation actively involved in freight distribution highly dependable on logistics. With the use of information systems, UPS’s information system is specifically adapted to the needs of parcel collection. As each parcel is moved through the UPS logistics system there are large amounts of data elements transmitted over cable networks supported by satellite and wireless communication systems. This network is named UPSnet. Every single parcel has to go through the UPS network regardless of its destination. This means UPS has to be highly invested in every aspect of its logistics network in order to deliver all packages to the proper location on time.

United Parcel Service was established in 1907 and headquartered in Seattle, Washington. It is a global company whose trademark is the world’s most famous and one of the most admired trademarks. UPS is the world’s largest express carrier, package delivery company. It is also the leading provider of logistics, and e-commerce services. “UPS handles about 61% of all parcels ground deliveries in the United States while this share drops to 34% for the overnight air freight market. It is estimated that UPS delivers more than 6% of the American Gross Domestic Product and 2% of global GDP each and every day” (Rodrigue,2013).
