There are careers in this world in which people may be subjected to many different religions. I have been in the United States Air Force for seven years and have experienced religious differences on a daily basis. The Air Force makes it mandatory to receive training on equal opportunity and treating people with respect no matter what faith they may practice. Some of the training consists of computer based training and also face to face training on how to adapt to religious and cultural differences when representing the United States Air Force. In this career field you encounter differences in faith with your co-workers, supervisors and customers. You also have the possibility of being deployed to numerous countries around the world. …show more content…
During my deployment I had to adapt to Islamic customs, courtesies and religious practices. I got the opportunity to visit a village and eat with some local villagers. According to Buzzle.com, “Dining in Afghanistan is a different experience and food is generally shared by everyone from the same dish. While eating it is customary to sit on the floor and eat with your hands. It is considered taboo to eat with your left hand and always leave something on your plate, or else it will get filled up quickly.” I had no idea about these customs and courtesies and felt very out of place during lunch. The interpreter then explained to me that it is normal to eat from the same dish and that it is customary not to grab food with your left hand. Once I realized some of the customs and courtesies I had no problem adapting because I was in their place of residence and wanted to treat the Afghan villagers with respect. Overall, I found the lunch to be a very memorable event and realized that the Islamic religion can be very welcoming and respectful.
I also had the opportunity to work hand in hand with some local villagers on construction projects. I found out very quickly that the Afghan villagers were very hard working and had pride in their work ethic. I could see that they felt a strong accomplishment in their work quality. They received wages for their
Winston Churchill once said, “Not to have an adequate Air Force in the present state of the world is to compromise the foundations of national freedom and independence” (Quotes about Everything). In this sense, the military is important to America, especially the Air Force. The Air Force provides security and safety to the people. Military lifestyles are usually not everybody’s first choice in the beginning. Particularly, the U.S. Air Force is not always is not always the first branch that comes to mind when thinking of the future. Most of the time, people come to conclusion of enlisting in any branch of the military because of an uncertainty of their future. “…I had no career or education goals, no plans; it’s just where my path took me”
The U.S. Marine Corps’ is thought to be one of the five free standing military departments, but in all actuality there is only three departments. The U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Navy are the only branches of the military that are correctly recognized as their own departments. There are two other Branches of the military that are under the U.S. Navy, one is the United States Marine Corps’. They were created to protect, but now they need protecting from budget cuts and disbanding. In order to protect the Corps’, they need to become their own U.S. Department, with their own funding and supplies.
Religious difference has been a question not just for theological schools and religious institutions but, increasingly for some businesses and corporations, offices and factories. In the past ten years the equal employment opportunity commission, which considers workplace complaints that may violate the civil rights act, has reported a 31 percent rise in complaints of religious discrimination in the workplace.
Given constrained funding and the requirements of short-term national military objectives and longer term operations, the Army should balance the Total Force as follows: first, decrease the Active Component deployments and increase the Reserve Component, specifically the National Guard. Second, assign National Guard units to specific regions and/or missions so that their training can be focused on these conflicts. And third, increase the use of National Guard units to reduce active component use particularly for low-intensity conflict and short term missions.
The United States Marine Corps is one of the most deadly task forces in the military. The United States Marines are a branch of the Navy and they operate in close with them at sea. The United States Marine Corps has a unique mission, they serve on the Navy’s ships, protect United States Naval bases, guard United State Embassies, and provide and quick and ready strike force to protect any of the United States interests.
While a commander’s staff conducts planning at any level, whether it is strategic, operational, or tactical, the importance of identifying both theirs and the adversary’s center of gravity (COG) is a critical part of the planning process. Three factors should be carefully analyzed in order to gain a full understanding of the COG; they are critical capabilities, critical requirements and critical vulnerabilities (U.S. Office of the CJCS 11 August 2011, III-24). Although a COG can be attacked directly, the indirect approach which seeks to destroy or neutralize the COG by attacking an adversary’s critical vulnerabilities can be a more efficient use of available resources. The United States Marine Corps’ Warfighting publication MCDP 1 draws a direct correlation between a COG and its critical vulnerability by stating, “we should focus our efforts against a critical vulnerability, a vulnerability that, if exploited, will do the most significant damage to the enemy 's ability to resist us” (United States Marine Corps 1997, 47). The Marine Corps favors the indirect approach to defeating an adversary’s COG because the functions assigned to them by the Department of Defense (DoD) require expeditionary operations and expeditionary forces typically are limited in size, assets, and resources driving them to target an adversary’s critical vulnerabilities.
The United States Marine Corp (USMC) was founded in 1775 during The Revolutionary War. From it’s inception, the ranks of the USMC were filled exclusively by males. Over 143 years later, in 1918, women were finally allowed to enlist. At first, women couldn’t participate in combat and were restricted to a limited number of jobs. As was common at the time, they were not respected by their male counterparts. It took several decades for women to gain respect and to be a allowed the full spectrum of opportunities within the ranks of the Corps. Opha M. Johnson was the one who helped immensely with this. It was because of her that women found and inspiration and a model female marine to follow. She made an impact that was forever-lasting and
As an institution tasked with the protection of the United States and its interest around the world including on, above, and below the sea, it is increasingly more important that the United States Navy (US Navy) continually works to generate and adapt to change in order be prepared for any threat from enemies near and afar.
The Unites States Air Force is a huge organization that employs a huge workforce annually who works as its security forces. The organization's mission is to fly, fight, and win all battles in the air, cyberspace, and air. As a huge organization, it acts as one of the most attractive options for individuals who are seriously considering a career with the security forces. However, such individuals should conduct an adequate research before choosing to seek for job opportunities with the organization. This is largely because individual responsibilities in the United States Air Force contain various risks that are associated with different jobs.
The United States has become a very advanced and intimidating force to be reckoned with. Many different factors have led to a more efficient and effective fighting force, but one factor that stands out amongst the rest is the evolution of how the military communicates. One person is limited and can only do so much without the help from others. When you introduce another individual, you drastically increase productivity and safety. One famous scripture from the Bible is “Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall chase ten thousand, and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.” (New International Version, Leviticus 26.8) Having more than one individual working together is good, but the most important thing is communication. The military understands these two concepts and because of this the military has created a unique and complex way to communicate.
The Aviation Branch of the U.S. Army, as we know it today, did not exist at the turn of the 1800 to 1900 centuries. The military did use a Balloon Corps and Detachment for the Civil and Spanish-American Wars respectfully. However, the Army deactivated both organizations after their usage in the campaigns. These artillery spotters and reconnoiters were helpful. However, the leadership did not see a usage for them outside of war. Therefore, it would take someone understanding the potential of air power to open a door for its peacetime usage. This occurred with the birth of the Signal Corps.
Cultural differences in the workplace can sometimes become a challenge in the work environment. In order to facilitate these differences, there must be some form of cultural awareness. Cultural awareness can help employees face the challenge of responding to individuals with different religions in the workplace, expose religious practices, and eliminate stereotyping in the workplace. Awareness of religions, and the beliefs associated with different religions, can be accomplished in many ways, such as training courses, workshops or company handouts (Thomas Kochan, 2003, p. 4). Companies must embrace multiculturalism and diversity.
Although Army Aviation has endured a multitude of challenging moments throughout history, none have compared to those faced in the land that has historically dared and tried many great nations such as the Macedonian Army around 330 B.C. and the Russian Army in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Because of this, this paper will be an informative look at the challenges the United States Army Aviation Operations faced during Operation Enduring freedom in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014. Included in the research, I will discuss the unforgiving terrain, such as a high mountain environment Aviators operated in, the extreme temperatures, degraded visual cues, the human errors aspect, as well the enemy situation, all which tested them all.
The onus of bringing up possible religious accommodations lies with the employee. It would be an unreasonable burden for employers to expect every possible accommodation within the workplace. This is because companies are in the business to make a profit. Moreover, employers do not need to hire possible employees
Today there are over 900 religious employee resource groups, according to the International Coalition of Workplace Ministries (Cañas & Sondak, 2010). These affinity groups can help encourage religious understanding by offering panel discussions that educate employees on their beliefs. By allowing open discussion, answering religious questions and creating an open, welcoming religious environment in the workplace employees can better relate to one another through shared religious principles (Cañas & Sondak, 2010). When looking at the business case for diversity, not asking employees to hide their faith at work allows for greater productivity, and time and energy focused on business results (Cañas
