The Way We Treat Others Who Are Different Diversity is all around us even though most of us do not think about it. Our country is made up of many different cultures. We each choose the amount of diversity that we accept into our daily lives. Some people embrace a diverse life while others are content to associate with people who are more like themselves. The reason for our lack of diversity may be as simple as, we have not been given the opportunity to include it in our lives. If we live and work in a small community, it may lack diversity. Whether people lead a diverse life is not the problem, the real issue is how we treat others that are different than ourselves. One of the ways we see people treat each other different is based on his or her race. Racism is when people of one racial group think or act as if they are superior to another group of people. It can be seen in the actions of people and how they treat others who are from different racial backgrounds. They often treat them as if they are inferior. People often think of racism as “white people” against “colored people”, but in reality it is much more complex. Racism occurs among all different races and cannot be narrowed down to one particular group of people. When there is racism, it may cause problems within a family; for instance, if someone marries outside of their race or if one family member adopts a child of a different race. Consequently, they may find that their spouse or child is not accepted into the
Racism is the belief that a specific race is superior or inferior to another, that a person’s social and moral traits are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics. Racism can also be defined as the belief that some races are superior to others. This definition is not sufficient to describe what racism truly is. For example, people who are racist do not like other races such as their skin color, language, traditions, and place of birth or any aspect that supposedly reveals the basic nature of that person. Long ago in America, racism was a very serious and immoral problem, and it is very much a problem in today’s society, as it was back then but on a dissimilar level. The African Americans, labeled as ‘Blacks,’ were slaves to white men. The slaves were disregarded, and beaten and insulted badly. Thus, sparked the beginning of a war and civil rights movements, all in attempts to resolve this problem. Although there is no flawless way to solve racism and it is evident that racism will always exist, what can be done nevertheless, is to limit its magnitude as much as
So, why do we need diversity? As America grows, the differences in cultures among individuals become colossal. People are becoming closed-minded about others who are disparate from themselves,
Diversity is to value that we are all unique and yet similar. We have different needs, interests, learning styles, language and personality etc.
Diversity can be differences in race, heritage, customs, belief systems, physical appearance, mental capabilities; etc Diversity should be respected and valued because nobody is completely the same as anyone else, even within the categories above. People tend to reject what is different. We must value our diversity in order to work together.
Our country is a good example of what diversity means. Globalization has increased rapidly, making our society a more diverse place. Where individuals from foreign places with different cultures, race, and languages all unite to become one. As one of my favorite novelist, F. Scott Fitzgerald, once said, “The rich are different from you and me.” (Walter Benn Michaels 725) The problem here is that Fitzgerald failed to realize that the “rich” were the same as everyone else, except with more money. A diverse society represents a country with various people of color, socioeconomics, national origin, etc. Although we are all different yet, the same, and come from different places, race, color, gender, and socioeconomics, nobody is looked down upon nor superior to the other.
Diversity is a term known for, "variety." To be diverse is to have a range of different types of people all in one place. Different types of people can range from their race, background, social class, age, or religion. Those are just a few examples that can separate a person from others. To be aware of diversity around you is something everyone should take note of. Many people may not realize that they live in such a diverse world that they do not know how to cope with someone when they do find someone with a different background than they do. Washburn University has a very diverse population and Washburn and most of the students and faculty are aware of this and take great pride in it. Washburn University is not the biggest college and it
Diversity in the united states in not something new here but in fact spans back many generations. Diversity is everywhere and no one can truly get away from it, but by accepting it a person can learn how to lead a better fuller life with variety of understanding for the people that come in contact with. I feel that the biggest thing I learned in this call about diversity is not that there is diversity but that there is a lot of work to be done to farther the peace action between the groups of people knowing this make me realize that the us is not yet a unity but is trying and gives me more
Racism is defined as poor treatment of or violence against people because of their race or the belief that some races of people are superior to others. This belief has been instilled in people for centuries. These beliefs have slightly deteriorated due to the civil rights movement. However, racist beliefs have managed to be passed down from generation to generation which is why racism is still quite prevalent today.
Diversity means difference as everyone is very different no one is the same, for example twins may be identical but be totally different and have different interests and different stages off development.
Diversity is defined as people coming together from different races, nationalities, religions, and sexes. Diversity has affected America today in a positive manner because it has given people the chance to gain
Racism is characterized by ideologies and social practices that cause or justify preferential distribution of privileges along the lines of racial or ethnical differences. Racism can assume forms of political
Racism is defined by merriam-webster.com as ‘1. A belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. 2. Racial prejudice or discrimination.’ Racism exists among all races and ethnicities, but most prominently between whites and blacks. The most basic cause of racism begins with the idea that there is something different between different ethnicities. Though that thought is illogical, it is one that seems inevitable. The amount of hatred one can hold against another because of the difference in their skin pigmentation is uncanny. There are an uncountable amount of sources on racism to be found just by merely looking on the internet. In
I believe that "Diversity" plays important roles in our lives. Without diversity, we cannot widen our field of view. Diversity helps us to open up our eyes and our world. From reading the essay "How diversity makes us smarter", written by Katherine W Phillips, I learned that there are some negative effects brought up by the social diversity where dialog of inclusion is advanced, but mostly diversity is something that has positive effect in our society and even individual. I could also reflect and make connection with my experience of moving from non diverse community to diverse community.
Diversity is an ongoing discussion in day-to-day life. Not many situations occur without diversity having a role. There are a multitude of topics that introduces or involves diversity, to include age, sex, race, gender, ethnicity and so on. Prior to participating in this Diversity Awareness class, I’ve always thought diversity was more geared around discrimination and racism. Through weekly readings and discussions, I have discovered that diversity is much broader than that. There are many countries that are mixed culturally
Diversity is an essential part of life because without it we wouldn't be able to collaboratively take down issues. At least within my experience professionally, academically and through volunteering I have seen various accounts where people from all different backgrounds come together to accomplish amazing feats. All of these accounts have impacted me and expanded my perception of the world and most importantly in a positive way. Currently I experience diversity on a daily basis while working at CU Boulder, as I have been given the opportunity to lead a team of 15 individuals that range in age and also cultural backgrounds. With my team being a majority of Laotian and Spanish speaking individuals every day I pick up on different insights on how to approach them which I feel this better
