Market research does this by giving marketers a picture of what is occurring, what is the customer habits like, or what is the macro environment like, then adjust their own business models to adopt to a brand-new business, suggest multiple options for entering or introducing new products, or determine if the market is worthy to risk. Alan Mulally, who was hired as CEO of Ford in September 2006, had not engineered, designed, or built any cars. He came from Boeing. After joining Ford, he devised a plan that identified specific goals for the company, created a process that moved it toward those goals, and installed a management system to make sure the company reaches those goals. Mulally demands weekly, sometimes daily, updates. “Alan's style is pretty relentless,” says chief financial officer Lewis Booth, a 31-year Ford veteran. “He says, ‘If this is the reality, what are we going to do about it?' not ‘We're going to work our way through it.'”
Uber is ridesharing smart phone application that connects drivers to passages and is an alternative option to the taxi industry. The core of the company’s business model revolves around lawbreaking, which enables it to have a competitive advantage in this industry through the use of noncommercial cars with drivers who lack the special driver’s licenses and/ or permits required by regulators. Both Uber’s upper management and lawyers are responsible for building a culture of illegality.
Google entered China in 2006 with high hopes of taking over the Chinese internet market. In order to become a major player for internet search engines in China, however, they had buckled and filtered search results according to the Chinese government. When Google.cn was launched, a loud public outcry over its giving in to the Chinese government on censoring and filtering search engine results, the company faced a communications crisis. Since Google had always been known for its free thinking, this seemed a vast contradiction. From a communications standpoint, Google’s greatest vulnerability in this crisis lay with a tarnished public image.

Yes! The Chinese auto industry is attractive to BYD. Given the expected growth and demand in the auto industry, combined with Chinese government having stopped issuing production permits for new automotive companies, there are very few remaining opportunities to get in to this booming auto industry. Moreover, BYD is getting a good bargain as the assets of the state-owned Qinchuan Auto are being sold at a cheaper price. The state owned auto manufacturers without foreign partners accounted for 25% of auto sales in China. Many of the SOE manufacturers did not even have R&D departments. Because most of the automobile parts were imported, similar models of cars cost more in China than in USA. The existing foreign joint ventures were selling the vehicles at prices that gave them margins of 10% to 20%. Considering the current situation, there is room for low-priced entrants. Wang always dreamt of applying Li-ion battery technology to develop an electric vehicle. Using newer battery technology and assembling it cheaply, the vehicle could be competitively priced and represent a way for China to leap

Political & Legal environment: The political system of a country is an important part of a companies marco-environment. ‘Who governs the country?’ ‘What does the government follow?’ and ‘What legal regulations follow from these policies?’. The most important factors a company is subject to are policy uncertainty, macro instability, and tax rates. Considering China is a country in transition all of the above factors are subject to change, to a degree substantially larger than it is in stable developed countries. We have recently seen changes happening in China on all of the above factors. One example is the new regulations regarding copying, which turned out in favor of Starbucks. However, what will happen in the (near) future is hard to tell. Whatever happens though, Starbucks will be subject to the consequences, whether positive or negative.
