The White Shark, Nekton Project
The White Shark, also known as the Great White Shark, is one of the most furious predators in the oceans worldwide. Same as every species, the White Shark is classified into major groups. This is called taxonomy. The taxonomy for this species is
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Sub-Phylum: Vertebrata
Class: Chrondrichthyes
Sub-Class: Elasmobranchii
Order: Lamniformes
Family: Lamnidae
Genus: Carcharodon
Species: C. carcharias
The kingdom Animalia means animal. The phylum Chordata includes animals with vertebrates. The class Chrondrichthyes includes cartilaginous fish, which are fish that has a skeleton made of cartilage rather than bones. The family Lamnidae includes sharks as the white shark and mackerel sharks. These sharks are usually very large and can swim really fast. The genus is the group before the species which includes other sharks that are very similar to the white shark. The species is the last group, which contains the Latin name of the specific organism. Through taxonomy, scientists are easily able to identify and classify species.
White sharks are usually found in oceans worldwide. They tend to appear more in cool temperate and tropical waters. Also, some are usually found near islands with high populations of seals. They spread throughout the world. Some of the places they are found in are along the coastline of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, California to Alaska, Hawaii, the Mediterranean Sea and many more.
Blacktip Reef sharks can be located at warm places (59F to 75F) such as, the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific and eastern Mediterranean, where they keep themselves mostly in the shallow warm waters and where they remain near their food supply. Some locations in where
The Great White Shark is the top predator of the ocean, meaning that it is not hunted by other animals in the waters. The Great White has been listed as an endangered species due to the over hunting of them for shark teeth and there fins.
There are two different species of Mako sharks, one is the long finned and the short finned Mako shark. The long finned Mako shark can be up to 14ft. The short finned shark lives in warm temperature water between 50 degrees north and 50 degrees south. The Mako sharks can be found near Australia and New Zealand they live out in the open oceans in deep waters down too 500 meters of depth. Mako sharks can not live older than 45 years. It is most likely to use it’s long sharp teeth to bite anything that is a threat to it or anything near it. The sharks inhabit all the temperatures in the world , with larger concentrations in the Pacific Atlantic and and indian oceans.
Arising over 350 million years ago, the shark species has been labeled as a human devourer. Now, with the increase in human population, the demand for shark meat, fins, and cartilage are at an all time high; therefore, the existence of the shark is becoming a concern (Budker 1971). Individuals are conditioned to think of sharks as a negative aspect to the environment, which is prolonging the effort to save shark species from becoming extinct. With that in mind, some private as well as national organizations have accepted the challenge of educating and informing people about the existence of the shark specie and its importance to the sea.
There are many different species of hammerhead sharks, the largest of which is the Great Hammerhead, or Sphyrna Mokarran. The great hammerhead, though endangered, is found all over the world’s oceans, has many distinct physical features, and has a very diverse diet. The great hammerhead also gives live birth and is considered potentially dangerous to humans, but is still regularly fished for many reasons.
Sharks are one of the oceans top predators. They vary in size from the extremely small dwarf shark, to the colossal whale shark. Sharks can be found all across the world’s oceans, from the tropic waters of Hawaii to the sub zero temperatures in the Artic oceans. Of the hundreds of sharks a select few species have actually been recorded in the Artic. Of these few, only three of them spend the majority of their time in these harsh, freezing waters. These sharks are the Greenland, Pacific Sleeper, and Salmon sharks.
Many people call sharks beasts, terrible things, killers, but they are not. For instance sharks need to eat to just like humans. Sharks can eat all day. When sharks eat too much they throw it up and eat more. Sharks fend for themselves when they are hungry they might find other sharks and eat them. Sharks eat squid, shrimp, sardines, tuna. Besides sharks can never stop moving so they don't’ stay in one spot. Lastly sharks might look mean but they are
The cause of this debate comes with the return of White Sharks to the area. Over the past few years, there has been an increase of this apex predator to our coasts like never before seen, most notably since Labor Day weekend in 2009. Five sharks had been tagged by a marine biologist, Greg Skomal, and have been closely tracked and documented since. Skomal is a key player in this research as project leader
The great hammerhead shark, also known as Sphyrna mokarran, is a pelagic shark and is found world wide in
The Great White Shark, scientifically known as the Carcharodon carcharias, was possibly 2016’s scasriest fish. The Great White shark’s environment was the aquatic marine biome, and it usually lived off the coasts of Australia, South Africa, and California. Although thier usual habitat was shallow coastal waters, Great Whites have been recorded in depths up to 3,900ft. The climate of the water they lived in was between 54 and 75°F. The limiting factors of the shark’s habitat were the nutrients and oxygen levels in the water. The Great White shark was the largest predatorial fish in the whole world. The Great White shark shared the ocean with about 440 other species of sharks, but its only natural predator was the Killer Whale, or
There are more than four hundred different species of sharks and only eighty-six species of whales. There are categories of whale that the species are divided into based on their features. (Kennedy) Whales belong to the big group called the Order Cetacea. There are two main categories split from the Order Cetacea; the Odontocetes and Mysticetes. The Odontocetes consists of whales with teeth and the Mysticetes have baleen instead of teeth. Baleen filters the food that whales eat, sharks do not have baleen, but have teeth instead, up to 30,000.
Shark finning is popular in asia. They cut the fin off of the shark, and then throw the shark back in the water. Since sharks are being killed for just the fin, there are bans against finning. People also started just killing them after the movie Jaws came out(8). It pictured a Great White shark attacking people viciously. It upset people because it was based on a true story, but in the actual occurrence it was a bull shark that attacked the people not the Great White(8). There are many shark sanctuaries set up in the ocean to protect them. They can go there and live without having to worry if they will get caught in a net or get their fins cut off. In many countries there are bans on Great White Shark products. There are many projects in effect for protecting Great White Sharks(Institution, Smithsonian). Great white sharks are illegal to hunt because they are endangered. They also have a short life span of about sixty years, but very few make it to even thirty. There are many signs that say the great white population is increasing slowly but steadily(Institution,
Sharks are one of the most feared carnivores in the sea. There are 365 species of of sharks in the sea as we know today. All sharks are carnivores. Most of them eat live fish, including other sharks. A shark's most common natural enemy is an another shark. Most sharks eat their prey whole, or they tear off large chunks of the bodies. Some sharks crush their prey. Others take out small pieces off flesh from large fish. Sharks also feed on dead or dying animals. Sharks have the reputation of attacking human beings. But less than 100 shark attacks a year are reported throughout the world. Sharks are most common in warm seas and oceans. Whale sharks, are the largest shark known to man. Sharks are classified in the order
Sharks have been in our oceans for almost 450 million years. Those millions of years of evolution have allowed many different shark species to develop abilities, and to become perfect predators.
Beginning with the simplest one-celled organism, an extraordinary animal rose in the murky waters entitled to a non-comparable killing-eating machine. This organism has become nature’s most genuine and most successful creature that it has remained unchanged for over 250 million years. Nature finally invented the perfect king of the sea. This animal has given the sea it’s “living” adjective; in turn, it was entitled—the “great white shark.”
