Thirty-two teams, sixty-four games, eight groups of four, years of qualifying and one world champion. The World Cup is an international soccer tournament that takes place in the summer every four years. It is more than just a game to all who participate, and their fans as well “Husbands have mortgaged their homes to attend it [the World Cup] Careers are defined by it, and athletes have been murdered for making mistakes“, (Trecker 16). It is more than just the world’s biggest sporting event, it’s the biggest event period. (Trecker 6) Before the World Cup began, the only tournament that was played in international soccer was the Olympics. (“History of the World Cup) These Olympic tournaments intensified Fifa’s dream to …show more content…
By the time they had to leave, only four European teams made the journey to Uruguay: France, Belgium, Romania, and Yugoslavia (“History of the World Cup”). The first World Cup finally opened in the new Estadio Centenario on 18 July 1930. This started a new era in soccer, which brought remarkable success in a sporting sense as well as a financial sense. Uruguay continued their dominance left as the Olympics, as they won this first World Cup. Uruguay was invited to attend and host the next World Cup, but denied the offer because of Europe’s last showing at the World Cup. (“History of the World Cup”) They not only denied hosting the tournament, but playing in it as well. Fifa then chose Italy over Sweden to host this tournament. This was a surprise too, because Europe’s showing again. This tournament had only sixteen finalists with no groups. Favorites like Brazil and Argentina went home after playing only one game. (“History of the World Cup”) This was not an indication of what would be to come, because Europe dominated the tournament is years to come. Since this tournament there have only been seven different winners. Four years later, Rimet’s wish was fulfilled as France was selected to host the next tournament in 1938. Again, few things went as planned; Austria, Uruguay, and Argentina all withdrew and Italy was crowned champions again. The tournament should have taken place again four years later, bout could not
The Olympic games originated in Athens in 776 B.C. The more popular modern day Olympic games began nearly 2300 years later in 1896. The games no longer represented a religious festival, but a sports competition instead. The games can be studied via multiple aspects such as political, social, and economic, but this paper will concentrate on the economic aspect of the games and more specifically, the macroeconomic impacts the games possess.

Thesis: Soccer is a sport like no other, and it has a very unique culture with in the game itself.
The culture of soccer is more than just articles written in sport pages, or rumors about players been transferred from one club to another. It includes a bigger picture that covers many different social, political and economic aspects of the game. In countries where the sport is not that relevant, people refer to it as soccer. In others where the sport is very popular and has been around for a long time, it is referred to as football. When it comes to the sport, there are two very different ideas relevant to how people view it. In said countries where soccer is the national sport, the game is viewed as if it can achieve anything; from having just fun with your friends to helping unite people from around the world. In other countries where the sport is not as much popular, the game is seen as boring and is looked down on. This paper will explore how soccer is growing at such a rapid pace despite the fact that it can be viewed as violent and boring.
Not much is known about the origin of soccer. However, the Greeks and Romans played football and ball kicking games. The London Football Association developed the first sets of rules in 1863. British sailors and settlers brought the game to India, South America and Europe.
Soccer, or football to most of the world, has been one of the oldest sports in the history of the world. It is by far the most viewed, played, and biggest attendance sport throughout the countries, with the exception of the USA. Being the biggest sport in the world means having the biggest fan base as well. This sport has become as close to many fans hearts just as the bible can change people who read it. In this paper, the reader will understand how soccer has changed throughout the years, what the ideals of a unified code are in this sport, as well as the differences and similarities between youth and professional.
Soccer has been described as the most beautiful game in the world. It is certainly the most popular; it’s played by more than 265 million worldwide! Every four years, thirty-two countries from around the world gather - after going through a grueling qualifying process - to compete for the honor of raising the golden World Cup trophy.
In 1996, the US women's soccer team won the Olympic gold medal and, in the summer of 1999, they faced down the best international competition in the World Cup beating China in the World championship game to win the grueling, month-long tournament.
Soccer is a popular sport played all over the world. Even though it has only been popular in the United States for the past 30 years, soccer has been a long time favorite most everywhere else. The sport dates back to the Egyptians, who played games involving the kicking of a ball. Now, the sport has grown to a global pastime, including men’s and women’s teams, and the World Cup (which is played every four years).
Soccer, the most popular sport in the world that has brought cities and nations together can be used as a metaphor to show how the world has grown together over time. Soccer, more commonly known as “The Beautiful Game” or “The World Game.” When the world stops for 90 minutes to witness that one thing we all understand, this is soccer. Soccer was first Recorded during the second and third centuries B.C. in China, where people would kick balls into small nets. The football association was started at the Freemason’s Tavern in 1863; it eventually would change to FIFA in 1904, as countries from around the world would join the association. (Jezek) Eventually as the association would expand and gain popularity they
Not only does the world affect soccer and its ideas, but soccer creates substantial effects on the world as well. Soccer extensively influences politics all over the world, some of its effects positive and some negative. One of the major positive effects the sport can have is its power to stop wars and bring nations together. One prime example of this is in 1967, Pele, a world famous Brazilian soccer star played in an exhibition match in Nigeria . Prior to this event, Nigeria had been in the middle of a civil war, but when Pele arrived to play in the match, the country called a 48-hour cease-fire just to honor Pele and his talent . In 2007 in Ivory Coast, the same thing happened again, only this time, Ivory Coast’s own soccer team united the nation. Ivory Coast had been at war with itself for five years when the national team played in the rebel capital. Both government supporters and rebels were next to each other cheering in the stands because of soccer instead of politics (“Football- A Beautiful Game…”). Another time countries have made peace over soccer was in 2008 and 2009 when Turkey and Armenia played in a World Cup qualifying game. The leader of Turkey and Armenia met to watch the game together consequently thawing relationships between the two countries (Weiner). Soccer can also be a vehicle for various movements, especially in the Middle East, where

In our socratic seminar about the article “Soccer’s Corrupt Soul,” we talked about FIFA’s deep-rooted corruption and where their greed has lead the World Cup’s future. FIFA is soccer’s main governing body, an oligarchy composed of very wealthy and powerful people. It has been discovered that these corporate bigwigs were associated with many deceitful and dishonest acts in the pursuit of making more money.
Soccer (Football) is the most popular and fastest growing sport in the world. Over 240 million people play it regularly around the world. However, most people only get to view one side of soccer in their lifetime. They never get a glimpse of it in any other setting. For many people soccer is a very competitive organized sport. For others it is an everyday, fun activity. In some countries, soccer is their life, while in others it is just a sport. For those of you that don’t know, soccer is a sport where the objective is to score goals by kicking a ball into the other teams goal. It is a mix of offense and defense, with very fast paced action. You are allowed to use any body part except your hands and elbows. Soccers first appearance traces back to 3000 years ago in ancient China. But, the first modern version of soccer originates from Victorian England. Since then, soccer has spread around the world to the point where almost every country plays some form of it. I am going to address how it is different around the world and the reasons for this.
Football first arrived on the shores of Brazil in 1864. British soldiers on shore leave kicked the ball around on their free time.
