At the films opening, the camera glides very slowly toward a television screen. The camera almost appears to enter the television screen and quickly moves through shots of Verona and the characters. On each character it freezes for a moment and displays his or her name, before moving through more shots of Verona. As well as shots of the characters and Verona the audience is also shown famous parts of the Prologue to Romeo and Juliet such as From ancient grudge break to new mutiny. This makes the film relevant for a young audience because it would hold the audiences attention and would show a variety of elements to the film, such as the location, characters and cast and the basic story line. The use of camera work retains the original plays ideas because the original play started with a prologue, which gave the audience an outline of the story. Shakespeare’s original prologue contained the words in fair Verona; Luhrman’s version also contains the words, as flashes that appear as white writing on a black
Luhrmann’s variation of the film is more suited to a teenage audience than Zeffirelli’s due to the vibrant settings and modern sets utilised throughout the film. Several of these sets include the beach, high rise buildings and petrol stations. These factors are used to tempt a younger audience. Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet, however takes place in a medieval Italian city. Although the original play was based and performed in this location, teenage viewers cannot relate to the surroundings, hence making it difficult to understand or appreciate the plot.

With Halloween being right around the corner, children are preparing for ABC’s “Thirteen Nights of Halloween,” parents are picking up pumpkins to celebrate the Celtic holiday, and the urge for a good horror story is emerging. The monster, such as vampires or zombies, is taking the spotlight and it’s hard to ignore. From Dante’s Inferno to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, being frightened has not only been one of people’s favorite pastimes, but a way for us to explain the paranormal and unrevealed. In recent times however, there seems to be a shift from demonic creatures of the night to over sexualized human-like creatures who hide amongst us in the day. In this essay, I will show the gradual humanizing of the vampire and how it has morphed from a demonic creature damned by God into a creature with a big heart that is not much different from us.

Love is another key theme within the narrative of the Shakespearean tragedy, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, and Baz Luhrmann's modern appropriation. The most famous scene that represents the depth of the characters love is the Balcony scene, and the 1996 appropriation proves greatly effective for a modern audience. A metaphorical comparison within the original play is used to represent Juliet as the ‘Light’ of Romeo’s life. “It is the east, and Juliet is the sun”. Luhrmann’s modern take on this sees the use of lighting when Juliet descends from an elevator, supplementing Romeo’s comparison to the sun as she is the light of the scene. A wide shot is used when both characters are seen,

For example, Juliet’s nurse calls for her, just like in the original. This proves that the movie differs from the book because it can be argued that Romeo and Juliet’s first meeting is a pure scene that should go untouched.
