Free Imaginations
There are many themes evident in both Stephen Crane’s The Blue Hotel and Bret Harte’s Tennessee's Partner; some of these themes are easily recognizable while recognition of the others depends on the perception of the reader. The two stories, share the theme of personal integrity and that all actions have consequences; however, there are several themes that are unique to each story that the reader can latch on to. The plot and storyline of Tennessee’s Partner are straightforward, but after reading Crane’s The Blue Hotel, one can imagine many different plots that could have taken place throughout the story. Through imagery, the reader can take what each author presents and let his or her imagination run wild; there is not a set feeling or reaction that either author intends for the reader to have after reading. Personal integrity can be seen in both stories between the characters Tennessee's Partner and The Easterner. Tennessee's partner is integrid because he never left his friend behind, even after he had done him wrong. He was always there for Tennessee and never betrayed him. The Easterner shows his integrity when he tells the truth about Johnnie and feel guilty about the situation with the Swede; most people would have shrugged it off so that they did not have to deal with it but he chose to speak up. Both of these forms of integrity show the true moral values of each character, each example gives us a better idea of what it’s like to be
Stephen L. Carter links integrity and honesty. There are three constraints discussed in this essay. First, integrity does require a degree of moral reflectiveness. Second, Integrity may cause conflict that is must be resolved. It does not necessarily produce or protect interpersonal harmony. Third, a person who has integrity can be trusted. It does not avoid the restructuring of social structures and associations, because it leaves the matter to exercise of interpersonal authority.
The Story Tennessee’s partner, written by Bret Harte also has many themes that are well presented while reading. The main characters, Tennessee and Tennessee’s partner, have a very complicated yet strong relationship. In the beginning of the story to the reader they are seen as friends until Tennessee does a dreadful thing to his partner. Friendship over all can be shown when Tennessee runs away with
Many modern stories use themes and ideas similar to those of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton. These two novels were written in the time period most heavily influenced by British Romanticism and shared many philosophies and ideas that were surfacing during their creation, and were prominent in the lives of the authors. There are multiple shared themes such as the criticism of the time period in which the novels were written, and the effect of a person's surroundings on their mental state and overall identity. However, one of the most prominent themes is the battle that occurs when a person’s reasoning, and their passion fall into conflict. This conflict is best represented
In the essay The Insufficiency of Honesty written by Stephen L. Carter he writes about integrity and honesty and his definition of having integrity. Carter says that to have integrity you know right from wrong and do the right thing from the beginning. He uses an example were the husband tells his wife in his death bed that he cheated on her. The husband was being honest to relief himself and he left his wife with the burden that he carried when he cheated. I believe that Carters point is that being honest is not always acting with integrity
Integrity is having a standard of morals and ethics, and living by them. It is a willingness and ability to do the right thing even when it is hard. The story To Kill a Mockingbird is filled with integrity. For example, many of the people in Maycomb share a prejudiced sense of integrity when it comes to its racist views. However, it is Atticus Finch’s integrity throughout the novel that really embodies the idea of moral and ethical principles. He puts into action every moral idea that he supports. Atticus is a role model to not only his children, but to the whole town of Maycomb, and his integrity is a great part of what makes him such a good example. Integrity
As we examined the essay “Sonny’s Blues” and “The Rich Brother” that may not have a great deal in common, but with more analysis in to the stories it becomes clear that they are similar but still have their own uniqueness. The stories are “The rich brother” which was written by Tobias Wolff is known for short stories or memoir and “Sonny’s Blues” which was written by James Baldwin also an American writer best known for its eloquence or rhetorical force in his writing. Both writers a best known for their famous writing than span for decades.
William Faulkner and John Updike short stories share the same theme loyalty. The use of different literary elements to explore this similarity is what differs within the two stories. The authors take different approaches such as characters, settings, and point of views to communicate the theme to the reader. Throughout both short stories, the reader can receive a precise overview of loyalty. Even though the differences of literary elements are announced, one can still analyze the deeper meaning overall.
Integrity is how a person is judged and will be remembered after they are gone. In other words integrity is a person’s word and how they ensure no matter what they always stick by their word regardless of the situation and always be honest not only with people around them, but to themselves as well. This allows individuals around to trust and believe in you and realize you can be relied upon in any situation. I do not agree how Malcolm in the Middle portrays integrity not only within a family, but as individuals. In the episode “Water Parks” Hal and Lois continually made jokes in regards to their son Dewey and how there is not a babysitter in their town that will babysit him due to his disruptive behavior.
Turning Points in the Life of Bret Harte A turning point is an event or or occurrence in our lives after which our life is significantly different or changed , often it is only after sometime has passed that we realize the meaning or effect of a turning point. Bret Harte (183-1902) grew up in Brooklyn and went through many different turning points in his life, which later contributed to his writing. When Bret was only nine years old his father passed away, so he took any job he could get and was very independent. By the age of 15 he was self sufficient and did not need anyone else to survive, and he published his first poetry book.
Authors, a lot of them surround us today, they are the person who enhances our imagination, or gives existence to anything that is plain and different. In American history, there were a number of poets and authors who rose to popularity. They changed people’s outlook on everything, and added a great amount of different things in American literature. Throughout this time, there were a couple of great poets and authors who helped create the local color school in American fiction. One poet who helped in this movement was Bret Harte.
The Master offers advice for the teen years, mid-life, and for the later years (Book II: 4).
Integrity is the honesty and truthfulness or accuracy of one’s actions. Integrity regards internal consistency as a virtue. One may judge that others “have integrity” to the extent that they act according to the values, beliefs and principles they clam to hold. As Williams explains, the principal of utility undermines personal
A&P, a short story by John Updike, would best be analyzed by using the school of New Criticism and analyzing the journey Sammy, the narrator, experiences throughout the story. The school of New Criticism believes that the work’s overall meaning depends solely on the text in front of the reader. This is the primary way that students are taught to analyze literature in high school, or early in college. Using this school, there are many different elements to evaluate or interpret; including theme, allusion, and point of view. When analyzing the hero’s journey, a reader should look at seven characteristics. By looking at these seven characteristics of the story, the reader will be able to see into the mind of narrator and see what he/she is going through emotionally and physically. The point of using these two techniques to analyze this story is to gain insight into the writers’ and characters’ minds and see what drives them to do what they do.
C.S. Lewis defined integrity as doing the right thing when no one is looking. That has been one of my greatest lessons as a professional and as a small business owner.
The points of view in which the stories "The Itch" by Don DeLillo and "The Other Wife" by Colette are written have substantial impact on the way that readers get to know and understand the characters in them. The authors of these stories combine narration style and characterizations to construct stories that enable their readers to understand the characters, and the ways that they change and develop throughout them.
