Theodore Roosevelt was only 43 when he became president. He was the 26th president. His term went from 1905 - 1909. The US had never had a president so young. He was given the Nobel Peace Prize and when he left office he took an African Safari. He was also shot after he left office trying to campaign in Wisconsin. He survived the gunshot.

He is well known for his temperament, interests, and achievements. Although there were no wars at the time, his slogan was reinforced by sending the expanded US Navy and the Great White Fleet on a world tour. “TR negotiated an end to the Russo-Japanese War, for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize. Theodore Roosevelts presidency ended the Gilded Age.” (Solheim, Bruce, 21-22) “Not only had Roosevelt alienated big business, he was also attacking both the judiciary and the deep faith Republicans had in their judges (most of whom had been appointed by McKinley, Roosevelt or Taft.) In the 1910 Congressional elections, Democrats swept to power, and Taft’s reelection in 1912 was increasingly in doubt.” (Blum, John Morton, 252).

In 1903, he helped Panama seceded from Colombia in order to facilitate the construction of the Panama Canal, which he later claimed as his greatest accomplishment as president. To prepare the United States for its big role in the world, Roosevelt sought to build up the country’s defenses. By the end of his presidency, Roosevelt had transformed the US Navy into a major force at sea. More importantly, Roosevelt led negotiations that ended the Russo-Japanese War in 1904-1905. For his efforts, Roosevelt won a Nobel Peace Prize. It also led to an agreement with Japan that traded that country’s recognition for the ongoing US presence in the Philippines. He told the people to treat other countries with compassion and friendship because they became such a great nation. With his use of repetition, allusions, and his tone, Roosevelt was able to emphasize his point in making the country a powerful nation to bring tranquility throughout the world.

The challenges that Roosevelt faced he overcame through perseverance and enforcing what he believed in. One of Roosevelt's most famous quotes is "Speak softly and carry a big stick". In the first several years of existence, the United States Navy was not a formidable fighting force. The young nation was hesitant to invest in a navy for many reasons, one of them being to prevent provoking the world powers of the time, France and Britain. On top of that, navies were very expensive to build and required a significant amount of resources to maintain, which the U.S. did not have at the time. To say that the United States Navy was ill prepared for war would be a dramatic understatement. The U.S. had a total of fifteen ships in its entire naval fleet compared to the might of the Royal Navy which possessed over six hundred warships. Even with the odds stacked against the U.S., President Madison declared war on 18 JUN 1812. The lack of size and power of the navy at the time would make it extremely difficult to satisfy the needs of the newly founded nation.

This meant that Roosevelt handled foreign affairs with a tranquil state of mind, but also threatened with the military if things did not go as planned. Roosevelt utilized this ideology to navigate America in the right direction. The Great White Fleet abided by this policy, specifically. From 1907 to 1909, the fleet sailed the seas and made history. Not only did this publicity stunt grant America the respect Roosevelt had hoped for, but it also altered world affairs significantly.

The Great White Fleet was a powerful battle fleet sent off by Theodore Roosevelt on a round-the-globe journey dating from December of 1907 to February 1909. The fleet was four squadrons of warships; or 16 battleships and their supporting auxiliary ships, which were painted white for no other reason than the visual appeal and to hide mechanical errors contained in the engine rooms. All were manned by 14,000 sailors and marines and traveled 43,000 miles. The fleet made twenty port calls on six different continents.
